KG MOBILITY Torres EVX

Launched in July 2022, the Torres is the last hope for the troubled Ssangyong Motor Company and the last vehicle to don the Ssangyong banner. Thanks to the Torres' success, the troubled car company is under the hands of its new owner, KG Group, and Ssangyong was renamed KG MOBILITY. A year has passed since the Torres' debut and with KG MOBILITY's new hopes for the new normal, an all-electric version made the rounds.

The first-ever Torres EVX, priced at 47.5 million Korean Won plus additional costs, is the all-electric version of the Torres that is metaphorically labeled as the First Electric Leisure SUV, despite the fact that this is basically an FF-only all-electric crossover fit for almost every walk of life.

To differentiate the EVX from the normal Torres, it's been given a different front design featuring visor-inspired headlamps and unique rear lamps. As for the interior, it's just like a regular Torres and despite its EV drivetrain, the boot space remains up to 1,662 liters thanks to the blade-shaped battery pack that doesn't occupy the space, a wise move only KGM can think of.

The blade-shaped 73.4kWh battery pack is mated to the electric motor that powers the front wheels. this EV powertrain produces a high-performance class 207PS power output, and 34.6kgf-m of torque, which is more compared to its petrol-powered equivalent. It has 433km of driving range on one full charge.

The fact that it's an FF-only electric SUV adds irony to its tough character, the EVX feels civilized to drive almost everywhere thanks to its front MacPherson struts, rear independent multi-link, and front ventilated disc brakes.

Like the normal Torres, the EVX has a wide variety of safety features such as Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Emergency Braking Assistance, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning, Lane Change Warning, Reverse Collision Avoidance Warning, Reverse Collision Prevention Assistance, and Safe Exit Warning, among many others.

Being a front-wheel-drive-only EV SUV hurts the tough character inherited from its petrol-powered equivalent but the Torres EVX is an all-or-nothing gamble rolled by the recently-renamed KG MOBILITY and looks like it's prime time for what's metaphorically called the First Electric Leisure SUV.

Originally available only for rental or car-sharing purposes until 2019, the Kia Ray EV returns, and this time, it's available to the general public starting at 27,750,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, making this the cheapest Korean electric car you can buy and own today.

No strings attached, of course. The Kia Ray EV made its comeback after a four-year absence and unlike the previous one, it's yours to drive and keep if you have the budget to fully own it.

The reborn Kia Ray EV looks just like the recently facelifted Kia Ray, meaning you can still expect the squarish front face with EV9-inspired headlamps, grille-less design, revised rear lamps, and the slightly revised interior with a 10.25-inch color LCD cluster and console-type gear lever as expected but because this is the electric version, you can expect a number of features to differentiate it such as the charging port, exclusive Smoke Blue exterior color, unique 14-inch alloy wheels, and the i-PEDAL mode that can be engaged via paddle shifters.

Micro-business entrepreneurs can have either the two-seater or the single-seater van variants where the rear seats have been deleted for the sake of extra cargo space needed to deliver some balikbayan boxes if you're into that.

The Kia Ray EV's electric powertrain is powered by a 35.2kWh battery pack, making it capable of producing 64.3kW of power output and 147Nm of torque. As for driving range, it's good for 205km in one full charge. As for safety, the Ray EV comes with numerous features such as Rear Collision Prevention Assistance, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Prevention Assist, among many others.

Made for the new normal, the Kia Ray EV is a budget-friendly electric vehicle you can really own and drive with confidence.

Mazda MX-30 Rotary-EV

Ever since the discontinuation of the RX-8 in 2012, Mazda became a shadow of its former self without the one engine that made it great, the rotary engine. Over a decade later, the rotary engine roars back but not in the way you're expecting.

Rotary power is back in the Reiwa era and this time, it's in the form of the MX-30 compact crossover, the game-changer in the Mazda lineup because of its questionable powertrains including the Mazda-first electric powertrain. Yours for 4,235,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, which is slightly cheaper to own than the fully-electric model.

At first glance, it looks and feels just like your typical MX-30, meaning it still has the same RX-8-derived freestyle doors, which is cool, the same minimalist dashboard, the same cork trims, the same struggling access through the rear seats, and the same boot space as usual. However, this is the Rotary-EV model and the only way to distinguish it is by looking at the rotary emblem embedded on the side as well as the e-SKYACTIV R-EV badge at the back. The real has come!

Let's get to know more about the e-SKYACTIV R-EV powertrain, the one that generated a blaze since its world premiere. It's basically a plug-in hybrid powertrain, a first for Mazda, where the newly developed 830cc single-rotor 8C-PH engine is bolted to a 125kW MV electric motor and a 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery. Stealing the idea from Nissan's e-POWER, the rotary engine doesn't power the wheels directly but acts as a generator to charge the batteries, making the MX-30 R-EV behave just like its fully-electric equivalent but with more range compared to its mild-hybrid equivalent.

Thanks to the e-SKYACTIV R-EV powertrain, the fuel economy is 15.4km/L based on WLTC Mode standards and while running on electric power alone, it's good for 107km.

Like the EV Model, the MX-30 Rotary-EV is front-wheel-drive only and it comes with rack and pinion steering, front MacPherson struts, rear torsion beam, and front ventilated disc brakes, meaning it behaves just like it for a commoner's car of course but thanks to its R-EV powertrain, it feels like smooth sailing. As for safety, you can expect an advanced i-Activsense with Smart Brake Support with Turn-Across Traffic in addition to a 360-degree camera, Driver Monitoring, and front cross-traffic alert, among many others.

Mazda has a record of putting the signature rotary engine on basic models including the infamous Parkway Rotary 26 bus from the mid-1970s. Consider the MX-30 Rotary-EV added to the list. Although it's not as exciting as the world hoped for, it's decent enough to welcome the rotary engine back in the Reiwa era. Consider it a new beginning for the engine that made Mazda great.

Hyundai Sonata DN8 The Edge

Launched in 2019, the eighth-generation Hyundai Sonata was meant to be the evolution of what's known to be Korea's people's car of the generation but due to today's motoring climate, it seems that more and more Koreans are starting to wane off from it and it faces the risk of its demise. 

Not giving up, Hyundai unleashed the facelifted DN8 Sonata with prices starting at 280,800,000 Korean Won plus additional costs. The question is, is the big minor change made the Sonata the best-looking Korean midsize sedan yet?

Beginning with the design, the big minor change retains the side view of the pre-facelifted DN8 Sonata but what happens at the front and back is a completely different story. The front features a Staria-styled nose while the back mimics its little brother, the Avante CN7. With such radical restyling, it looks like the once-boring executive midsize sedan for the commoners became a much fiercer, likable one. Touche.

The interior has been heavily revised for this big minor change with the dashboard bearing a Hyundai-first panoramic curved display akin to today's Opel/Vauxhall models that were driving under the influence of Peugeot, if you catch my drift. With an extra-long monitor featuring a 12.3-inch instrumental and a 12.3-inch sat-nav touch screen positioned at the driver's side, it features a new steering wheel with a gear lever positioned behind it just like its big brother, the Grandeur GN7, repositioned switches for the climate control, and the similar creature comforts carried over from its pre-facelifted model, this is luxury reasserted for the heavily revised model.

The choice of engines remains the same for this updated model ranging from the 180PS 1.6L Turbo, 2.0L petrol, 2.0L LPG, and 2.0L Hybrid, and for the N-Line model, a 290PS 2.5L Turbo petrol engine mated to an 8-speed DCT. 

Like the old one, the new Sonata can be either comfortable or sporty at the push of a button but drivers can use the CUSTOM feature to choose just how sporty or comfortable their car is to their liking, resulting in a more personalized driving pleasure. In the case of the N-Line model, the N-tuned parts add some spice to its dynamics if you're into that.

Apart from the driving pleasure for all, the new Sonata comes ready with the Hyundai SmartSense suite of safety features that will keep itself safe on the journey home unless you know what.

With the biggest update for the current-generation model, will this be Hyundai's last-ditch attempt to make the Sonata great again? You judge.

Toyota Alphard and Vellfire (H40W)

For over two decades, the Toyota Alphard served as the flagship of Toyota's minivan lineup and it has been a favorite for VIPs of the East. The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire minivans are now on their H40W spec and because they're all-new from scratch, they are no longer the luxury minivans the Easterlies are familiar with. These minivans have turned pure alpha and they're ready to strut the road in style and comfort, no doubt.

Beginning with the styling, the all-new Alphard's front view features a mammoth T-shaped grille that can embarrass today's BMW designs and for the first time, the Alphard badging has been replaced by the Toyota logo on it, a move similar to today's Harrier and Noah. Do not worry, the Alphard emblem is now located on the side view packed with sharp-looking windows. As for the rearview, it can be somewhat reminiscent of last decade's Crown.

The Vellfire, meanwhile, features the same shape as the Alphard but with a front view that says "Honey, I grew the Roomy" and a rearview reminiscent of the Hyundai Grandeur TG, adding some dramatic flair to it, if you catch my drift.

Both the Alphard and the Vellfire are packed with an all-new interior which is slightly longer than the previous models while maintaining the same width and wheelbase as their predecessors. They're all offered as seven-seaters with ultra-luxurious second-row seats, a prized hallmark for these minivans.

On the driver's side, it features a 12.3-inch TFT color meter with a multi-information display, color HUD, a 14-inch sat-nav, a new digital rear-view mirror, and others. The passenger side, meanwhile, features a host of luxury amenities including Toyota firsts such as the super-long overhead console, power side sunshade for rear seats, universal steps positioned at the sliding doors for easy access, one-touch seesaw switch on the sliding doors, and the world's first 5:5 split two-position space-up seats where the third-row seats can be flipped up for extra space.

As expected, all variants have four-cylinder engines and no V6 in them. That's it and that's all. Speaking of which, in order to differentiate the Alphard and the Vellfire, the petrol variants have been specified for each minivan. 

The Alphard Z variant is powered by a 2.5L 2AR-FE engine that produces 182PS of power, and 235Nm of torque. Mated with the Super CVT-i, it has a fuel economy of up to 10.6km/l for FF variants.

The Vellfire Z Premier, meanwhile, is powered by the turbocharged 2.4L T24A-FTS engine that produces 279PS of power and 430Nm of torque. Mated to a Direct Shift-8AT, it has 10.3km/L of fuel economy for FF variants.

Both the hybrid variants of the Alphard and the Vellfire are powered by a 2.5L A25A-FXS petrol-hybrid powerplant bolted to an electric motor (two electric motors if you're on the e-Four variant), a nickel battery, and CVT. With this powertrain, fuel economy is up to 17.7km/L for FF variants while e-Four variants get up to 16.7km/L.

Running on the TNGA platform, front MacPherson struts, rear double wishbones, and ventilated disc brakes, both the all-new Alphard and the all-new Vellfire behave like luxury cars with their refined silence and comfort that can please VIPs from the hot seat. In addition, both are packed with Toyota Safety Sense and Toyota Teammate for safer driving and worry-free parking worth noticing. Don't ask your boss about these gizmos.

The Alphard starts at 5.4 million Japanese Yen while the Vellfire starts at 6.55 million Japanese Yen plus additional costs.

With the all-new Toyota Alphard and the all-new Toyota Vellfire making the rounds, high rollers of the Far East are ready to double down on these new versions because of the style, luxury, practicality, and comfort worth their trip, not to mention the tech involved. Because both minivans are powered by four-cylinder engines only with the Vellfire at the top of the pack with its turbocharged 4-pot, there's no idea how to explain these minivans to the boys and girls at Okada, Newport World Resorts, Solaire, City of Dreams, Hann, or whatever casino-resorts these minivans served.

KG Mobility Tivoli - 2024 minor change

Having been on the lineup for eight years running, the Tivoli lineup has received another minor change and things get a little interesting for KG Mobility's baby-SUV range.

The Tivoli and its longer Tivoli Air have received another minor change for the 2024 model year, keeping the entry-level SUV lineup from KG Mobility (formerly Ssangyong) ready for more when the opportunity arises.

The most noticeable change for this updated version is the front view and it now dons a styling similar to a Toyota PPV I can't mention here due to search query reasons. This new front view gives the Tivoli a sporty feel on the go and apart from that, a new set of wheels and a mildly revised rear view truly made a statement.

The interior is heavily revised for this latest facelift with the air vents positioned above the dashboard, a new climate control, a new 10.25-inch digital cluster, and a new touch screen with smartphone connectivity and INFOCONN service. While the dashboard layout's new, the comfort for five people and spacing still remains with the Air the most spacious of the Tivoli range.

Both the new Tivoli and the Tivoli Air remained the 1.5L GDi turbo engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with the shorter one offered with the 1.6L petrol engine. Sticking to the turbo one, it produces 163PS of power and 26.5kg-m of torque. Fuel economy is good for a combined 12kmpl for FF models.

The shorter Tivoli is only offered with the optional 4WD system that allows this crossover to go everywhere when needed.

In terms of safety, both the new Tivoli and the new Tivoli Air are offered with a DeepControl suite of advanced safety features, seven airbags, 79% rigidity, an Electronic Stability Program, an Anti-Rollover Protection, a Brake Assist System, an Emergency Stop Signal, Hill Descent Control, and Hill Start Assist, among many others.

For a limited time, the Tivoli is priced at 22,090,000 Korean Won while the Tivoli Air is priced at 22,940,000 Korean Won plus taxes and fees.

The recently facelifted Tivoli range shows that they're still on the go for eight years running, like it or not. The improved looks and interior are a sign of things to come for the Tivoli range under the hands of KG Mobility. That's common sense to you.

2nd Gen Mitsubishi eK Space (2024 facelift) and Delica Mini

The second-generation Mitsubishi eK Space has received a facelift to keep itself fresh and apart from that, its rugged sibling, the Delica Mini, joins the party, giving customers various ways and means to enjoy the traffic-friendly kei minivans Mitsubishi offered.

For the 2024 model year, the second-generation Mitsubishi eK Space is now updated with a heavily revised front view that is proven to be more stylish than its pre-facelifted model. The first-ever Delica Mini, meanwhile, is the rugged version of the eK Space that serves as the replacement for the now-axed eK X Space. With its rugged styling and the DELICA lettering etched on the front and back, the Delica Mini showcases its outdoorsy vibe fit for a quiet Sunday drive into the woods.

The interior looks pretty much the same as the pre-facelift model but it's got a new sat-nav offered as an available extra and that's pretty much about it. For more expensive models, you can expect some noticeable stuff you may find, well, noticeable, such as the back table at the back of the front seats, keyless entry, touch panel aircon, and others, not to mention the waterproof sheet fabric which is ideal when you accidentally spilled something. The Delica Mini inherits most of the interior features from the eK Space so you can expect the same stuff from it.

Either way, they are tall enough to let occupants stretch themselves on the inside and offer generous rear legroom and ample spacing fit for all kinds of stuff to do. Honest work.

Both the facelifted eK Space and the Delica Mini are equipped with the same BR06 three-cylinder DOHC 12V ECI engine bolted with a tiny electric motor and a CVT gearbox. Thanks to some slight improvements, the fuel economy is around 20.9kmpl based on WLTC Mode standards. The Delica Mini is offered exclusively with the turbocharged variant of the same engine producing 64PS of power output and 19.2kmpl of fuel economy.

In kei car tradition, both the eK Space and the Delica Mini are no sweat to drive thanks to their compact sizing, less complicated suspension setup, and available 4WD, not to mention a wide range of safety tech from e-Assist to MI-PILOT, making them true city class cars for everyday use.

The facelifted eK Space and the first-ever Delica Mini are now ready to take on the new normal for simple people looking to find new hobbies out of these kei minivans. Like it or not, these traffic-friendly kei minivans are ready to get the job done, no rush at all.

Abarth 500e (FA1)

Abarth welcomes the age of electrification with the all-new electrified 500, which is basically an FA1 Fiat 500 on steroids. A rather unwelcoming but welcoming way to introduce speedo boys to the new age of Abarth.

With prices starting at 37,950 Euros plus additional costs, the Abarth 500e welcomes speedo boys to the dark side of electrification as this electrified hot hatch completely vandalized the EV rulebook in the name of performance and freedom that will keep them addicted for more.

Beginning with the styling, the Abarth 500e looks pretty much the same as the normal Fiat 500e, in normal and cabrio versions, but it's been given Abarth credentials such as the show-off ABARTH lettering at the front, unique bumpers, and wild-looking 17-inch wheels, not to mention the new scorpion badging on the sides that signals Abarth's new generation.

Inside, the new Abarth 500e works pretty much the same as the normal Fiat 500e as well but the sat-nav is packed with performance pages with the odd-looking Drag function that checks acceleration and braking times. It even comes with an Abarth sport steering wheel, sports seats, and a rather flashy feature called Abarth Sound Generator that generates faux engine noises inside and out. Yes, the sound part is flashy indeed because why would they want to put noise in a noiseless EV car? Bad idea but speedo boys don't care about bad ideas anyway. They'll rather ignore such flashy stuff like this.

While the faux engine sound gimmick is deemed flashy by most speedo boys, is the performance worth redeeming in this electrified Abarth? With a 42kWh battery pack installed, the Abarth 500e's electric drivetrain pumps out 155ps of power output and 235Nm of torque, making it capable of a 0-100kph time of seven seconds and has a top speed of 155kph. The driving range is around 265km on one full charge and when plugged at a public charging station, it will take 35 minutes to get to 80% battery capacity, the size of one episode watched and three hail marys.

Although heavier than the old 500-based Abarth hot hatches, the Abarth 500e still behaves like a hot hatch because the dynamics are so out-of-character for an electric city car of this magnitude, and with the Scorpion Track in place, you can really drive this thing harder and louder for longer on the track. 

While driving on a comfort-oriented Turismo mode or sport-oriented Scorpion Street, the Abarth 500e features one-pedal driving, an idea stolen from today's Nissan Leaf. When you lift your foot off the pedal, it slows down and recovers kinetic energy to recharge the batteries, eliminating the need for applying brakes. Of course, you'll need one in case you want to make a full stop.

As expected the Abarth 500e features Level 2 autonomous driving in the form of intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control and Intelligent Speed Assist, among many others.

Although one of the most controversial vehicles ever made this year, the Abarth 500e is one of the must-haves this year. Despite its show-off faux engine sound that is a real turn-off for speedo boys behind the wheel, the electrified performance is what made Abarth adapt to this new normal, and like it or not, the world's experiencing burning jealousy, wishing they want to drive one. Come on, Abarth. We're waiting.

Honda ZR-V

Honda's controversially new crossover, the ZR-V serves as the de facto replacement for the CR-V, the one no longer available to the Japanese public for the time being. Although smaller than the now-defunct CR-V, this new model will leave their heads scratching out of curiosity.

Priced at 2,932,600 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the first-ever Honda ZR-V is not made to fill in the shoes of its now-defunct big brother, the CR-V. In fact, it's an all-new model made to cater to the needs of every Japanese driver looking for a crossover that fits well for Japanese driving conditions. Whatever the reason, the ZR-V is common sense on four wheels.

Beginning with the styling, the ZR-V features a front face that is not common for a Honda vehicle like this because the Honda logo is positioned above the grille rather than into the grille like most Hondas had. Although the grille is reminiscent of the Maserati Levante, the ZR-V features slim LED headlights, blistered rear fenders, and rear quarter light windows. Fun fact the ZR-V is basically the big brother of the Vezel and both of them are sold under the HR-V naming, which adds more confusion to observers and insiders alike.

Because the ZR-V, like the now-defunct CR-V, runs on the same mechanicals as today's Honda Civic, you can expect the Civic-esque interior for our controversial debutante. Behind the wheel, the ZR-V packs a three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters, a nine-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, a 10.25-inch digital instrumental display, and a full-width air vent design, not to mention an available wireless charging hub, USB ports, full-auto air conditioner, and an available BOSE Premium Sound System. The non-hybrid variants had a gear lever while the e:HEV variants have buttons in place of a gear lever.

On the passenger side, the ZR-V feels not so bad to live with as well as the boot space. Although less spacious than the now-defunct CR-V, it's more spacious than its little brother, the Vezel. There are convenient features as well such as a power tailgate and an available hands-free access function, making it easier to manage some stuff at the back.

Under the hood, the ZR-V is offered a choice of a 1.5L VTEC Turbo and a 2.0L e:HEV hybrid powertrain. The turbocharged variant produces 178PS of power and 240Nm of torque. Mated to a CVT, it has up to 14.6km/L of fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. The e:HEV variant has a combined power output of 184PS of power and 315Nm of torque. With the e-CVT similar to today's Civic Hybrid, fuel economy is up to 22.1km/L based on WLTC Mode standards.

Underneath, the ZR-V features Rack and Pinion Electric Power Steering, front ventilated disc brakes, rear disc brakes, front MacPherson suspension, rear multilink suspension, and torsion bar stabilizers. In its FF guise, the ZR-V feels normal to drive, but with the Realtime AWD system, the ZR-V feels capable almost everywhere.

Safety-wise, the ZR-V features Honda Sensing, a range of advanced driver-assist systems consisting of autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, auto high beam, adaptive driving beam, traffic jam assist, and false start suppression, among many others.

The ZR-V is basically the most controversial Honda crossover ever made because, in Japan, it served as the de facto replacement for the CR-V. Of course, while the rest of the world got a new version, it seems Japan denied one in favor of the ZR-V. Although a cowardly move that is abundant for Japanese carmakers shying away from their world market cars, Honda calls it common sense.

Subaru Impreza (GU)

Back to being a "new driver's basic", the Subaru Impreza is now on its sixth generation, and for the first time, it is offered only as a hatchback, making it a direct competitor to the likes of the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla Sport. So, what's it all about the all-new Impreza?

The all-new, sixth-generation Subaru Impreza is a back-to-basics hatchback made for commoners looking for their first ride. There's nothing surprising about this all-new model. Just the basics it possesses.

Beginning with the design, the all-new Impreza is basically a toned-down Crosstrek, which came first before this, meaning those who are familiar with the Crosstrek should have no problem with the all-new Impreza's exterior design, which features striking scales on the front grille, sculpted lines, and contoured facets you would expect for an everyday hatchback like this.

Inside, the new model is now focused on minimalism as well as gaining better visibility on the driver's side, making it easy to spot children from any window. Of course, because of the minimalist interior, you can still run into the same Tesla-esque dashboard from today's Levorg. An optional extra not favorable for speedo boys behind the wheel because of touchscreens.

Asked about comfort, the new Impreza's added size made it more spacious and more comfortable than before, and with improved stability, children won't get carsick even on long rides. As for the boot space, the new model has up to 368 liters of boot space for the entry-level ST variant (315 liters for high-end variants like the ST-G and the ST-H) with the rear seats folded down. That's more than the Toyota Corolla Sport and with a couple of useful features such as the hidden compartment below, cargo hooks, and an LED rear gate lamp, it's convenient as well.

Under the hood, the all-new Impreza is powered by an available 2.0L e-BOXER mild hybrid powertrain where the 145PS 2.0L boxer 4-cylinder engine is bolted to a tiny electric motor and Li-ion battery. Mated to a CVT gearbox, it has a fuel economy of 16.6km/L for FF variants while AWD variants get 16km/L. A normal 2.0L boxer-four engine is offered on the entry-level ST variant.

Coupled with the Subaru Global Platform, two-pinion electric power steering, double wishbone rear suspension, and SI-DRIVE, this car behaves like every commoner's car should. Not exciting as such but it feels okay to drive everywhere, even with the legendary Subaru AWD capability on it.

As for safety, the new Subaru Impreza comes with an updated EyeSight system with Pre-Collision Braking, Automatic Emergency Steering, Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, and others. With such features, it's no wonder Subaru made a commitment that the Eyesight feature drops the rear-end collision rate to 0.06%. 

The all-new Impreza starts at a reasonable 2,299,000 Japanese Yen and it's available in three variants; ST, ST-G, and ST-H, in FF and 4WD configurations. With such pricing, it's cheaper to own than the Honda Civic by a long shot.

Although not the most exciting car to drive, the all-new Subaru Impreza is mature and well-refined for drivers from all walks of life. With its improved space, sharper looks, refined efficiency, and cutting-edge technology, it's back to being a "driver's basic" just like the first one.

Chevrolet Trax (2nd Generation)

Back in the good old days, the Chevrolet Trax is basically a Buick Encore for the commoners. Not anymore, it isn't. The all-new Chevrolet Trax Crossover is no longer the Trax you know.

The all-new Chevrolet Trax Crossover is the evolution of Chevrolet's baby crossover that was meant to be a common sight when the first one came out a decade ago and with prices starting at 20,400 US Dollars, it's cheaper to own than its little brother, the Trailblazer. It's a shocker of a bargain for this city-focused crossover.

Beginning with the styling, the Trax Crossover ditches the squarish proportions of its predecessor in favor of a striking silhouette that looks spot-on for a crossover of its size. From its flowing front face, sweeping roofline, and some matte black plastic cladding, you can really tell its sporty character swooping around this new model and although shorter than the Trailblazer, it's longer and wider compared to its little sibling.

Inside, the all-new Trax Crossover is pretty much what you would expect for a crossover built for the new normal. Behind the wheel, you will be greeted by its angular dashboard design that features an available 8-inch diagonal driver information center, an available 11-inch diagonal display screen with fully-functional smartphone connectivity, an available wireless smartphone charging pad, and others. 

Because it's 11 inches longer and two inches wider, this five-seater has three inches more rear leg room than the old Trax and it can accommodate nearly six cubic feet of cargo space or up to 54.1 cubic feet of max cargo space with the rear seats folded down. That feels good but sadly, the rear door only opens by hand, unlike the Trailblazer, meaning if you get your hands full with today's thrift shop haul, you'll need to find someone to open the boot for you. Bad mark for the Trax there.

Because it runs on the same mechanicals as its little brother, the Trailblazer, the Trax Crossover feels as nimble and as capable as a commoner's compact saloon, which is pretty common for a front-wheel-drive-only CUV that works on normal roads. Yes, FF-only because the Trax Crossover is available only in front-wheel-drive unlike its predecessor and its little brother, sadly.

Under the hood, the Trax Crossover is powered only by an ECOTEC 1.2L turbo engine that produces 137HP of power and 162lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed AT, it has an estimated combined fuel economy of 30MPG. That's rightsizing working out for you.

In terms of safety, the Trax Crossover features a host of safety and driver assistance features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning System and Forward Distance Sensing System, Forward Pedestrian Detection and Braking System,  low-speed automatic emergency braking system, Intellibeam smart high beam, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist System, Lane Change, Blind Spot Warning System, and others.

The all-new, imported from South Korea, Chevrolet Trax Crossover may have lost some of the charms from its predecessor because it's offered only in front-wheel-drive but because of such sizing and styling, not to mention the pricing that makes it more affordable to own than the Trailblazer, there's never been a good time to make this one your first car when you first got your driver's license.

Citroen C4 X

The first-ever Citroen C4 X can be considered the baby brother of the C5 X but unlike its big brother, it's an all-electric crossover saloon with almost little to show for it. So, what's it all about the C4 X?

Starting at 27,650 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever e-C4 X is cheaper to own than its big brother, but like all good cars, it's complicated to explain what's that car for as we will observe what's it all about from top to bottom.

To differentiate the C4 X from the normal C4 crossover hatchback, it's been given the impression of a coupe crossover, think BMW's X4 but with a pinch of ratatouille on it. It may look like a jacked-up saloon but in reality, it's all common sense. Of course, you can expect typical Citroen styling all over, especially the signature cross-face most models had. If you're feeling cross-eyed, then this is what this car looks like for you. Classic Citroen vibe.

Asking about the interior, the C4 X works and feels like a normal C4. meaning you can expect the available sat-nav with smartphone connectivity, a high-tech instrumental cluster, and seating for five people, just like in the normal C4. However, the boot space is greater than the normal C4 because it has up to 1360 liters of boot space for the e-C4 X variant with the rear seats folded down. With such space, you have room for extras on your next weekend trip in a quiet French landmark or possibly a nearby thrift shop if you're into that.

The choice of powertrains for the C4 X consists of a PureTech S&S petrol engine (with up to 130PS of power) mated to either a 6-speed MT or an 8-speed AT, a 130PS BlueHDi diesel engine, and for the e-C4 X, a 136PS electric motor capable of hitting a 0-100kph in less than ten seconds, 150kph of top speed, and up to 360km of driving range.

Although not exciting to drive as expected, the C4 X puts its emphasis on comfort, a classic Citroen tradition, and with that, it comes with a unique suspension setup with progressive hydraulic stops. Thanks to such suspension, driving on a rocky road feels like there's nothing underneath. You can really drive one on a rough road without leaving someone's drink getting spilled and that's how Citroen's signature suspension works.

In terms of safety, the C4 X comes with over 20 safety and driver assistance systems including Active Safety Brake, collision risk alert and Post Collision Safety Brake, Highway Driver Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, HUD, reversing camera with Top Rear Vision, and many others.

Although not a worthy favorite for speedo boys, the C4 X behaves pretty much like its big brother, the C5 X, and because it's got more to show for than the normal C4, it's a hard bargain worth checking out. Like it or not, this crossover saloon is out there to play smart, not hard.

Opel/Vauxhall Astra L GSe

The first-ever Opel/Vauxhall Astra GSe range signals the birth of a new electrified performance sub-brand. GSe stands for Grand Sport electric and although they're not the successors to the defunct OPC/VXR hot hatches speedo boys are hoping for, the dynamics are worth unorthodox for electrified cars like these.

With prices starting at around 45,510 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Astra GSe is the first of the new GSe range of electrified vehicles that delivers sporty performance and ecology that shows you can never have too much science because if you enjoyed its electrified performance, science works.

Before talking through the science abuse stuff the GSe delivers, let's observe the difference between this and the normal Astras. To differentiate the GSe from the normal Astra, which is now based on today's Peugeot 308, the GSe range features a unique lower grille insert, lightweight 18-inch two-tone diamond cut alloy wheels, and on the inside, jet black Alcantara front seats, not to mention the GSe badge slapped on the back. Unique GSe features aside, the electrified performance variants offer the same conveniences as the normal Astra L range, in hatchback and Sports Tourer variants.

The Astra GSe range is basically a rehash of the plug-in hybrid variants of the current Peugeot 308, meaning you can expect the same turbocharged 1.6L petrol engine connected to an 81kW electric motor. It produces a system power output of 225PS of power, has a 0-100kph of 7.5 seconds, and a top speed of 235kph. Mated to an electrified 8-speed AT, it has 1.1L/100km combined fuel economy based on WLTP standards.

Because dynamics are the main focus of the GSe, it features a unique sport-tuned suspension setup that drops 10mm of height, Koni FSD dampers, and a special ESP setting with a higher activation threshold. With such setups made exclusively for the GSe, driving one of these feels mild and tangy in every way. Although not as wild as a hot hatch, it feels easier to drive as such.

Although they're not the successors to the defunct OPC/VXR hot hatches speedo boys are hoping for, the dynamics are worth unorthodox for electrified cars like these. What a way to kick off the GSe brand in a big way.

Peugeot 408 (F)

The first-ever Peugeot 408 is basically a poor man's BMW X4 because, like the X4, it's a coupe crossover that is deemed redundant for speedo boys everywhere, unless you're French and you don't care about the newest Peugeot on the block.

Starting at 35,730 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Peugeot 408 is basically the expensive equivalent of the Citroen C5 X despite the fact the 408 runs on the same nooks and crannies as the C5 X. Like it or not, this cheaper alternative to the BMW X4 is something worth checking.

Beginning with the design, the 408 is the second Peugeot to feature the company's new design language debuted on the third-generation 308, the hatchback that give birth to the new age of Peugeot. Although the front face has the impression of the sabertooth tiger trying to attack you from above, the coupe-like sidelines and the generic rear view showcase the business end of the 408.

Inside, the 408 features a similar Peugeot i-Cockpit layout as the other models, meaning you can still expect the steering wheel positioned below the dashboard, the 10-inch touch screen that controls almost the entire car, a volume knob and switches, and other futuristic stuff you can find on the 408's dashboard. On the passenger's side, its five-seater layout makes it ideal for whatever life throws at you, and with up to 1545 liters of boot space, it's sadly less spacious than its French counterparts such as the Citroen C5 X and the Renault Arkana.

Because it runs on the same nooks and crannies as the C5 X, the Peugeot 408 features a choice of PureTech petrol and Hybrid powertrains mated exclusively with an 8-speed AT. The latter is basically a PHEV where the 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is connected to an electric motor and a Li-ion battery, generating up to 225PS of power and 360Nm of torque. It does 0-100kph in 7.9 seconds and has a 233kph top speed. Fuel economy is around 1.2L/100km and has up to 63km of electric driving range; the equivalent of five 12km eggs and a 2km egg you're trying to hatch in your Go game while on the move.

In a typical French driving landscape, despite being a coupe utility vehicle, the Peugeot 408 is front-wheel-drive only but who cares about it. It drives like a Peugeot in every way and although not intended to take things roughly, it's about as civilized as going for a nice stroll at the BGC on weekends.

Speaking of civilized, the 408 features a wide array of driving aids such as adaptive cruise control with stop and go, automatic emergency braking, active lane departure warning and prevention, driver attention alert, road sign recognition, a night vision system, long-range blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, a 360-degree camera, and automatic high beam. Coupled with Drive Assist 2.0 which adds Level 2 autonomy, the 408 is a shocker for speedo boys behind the wheel.

Although less spacious and more expensive than its French friends, the first-ever Peugeot 408 delivered quite an impression not bad for a coupe crossover that is cheaper to own than the BMW X4. Speaking of which, if anyone's asking what's a Peugeot 408, this is the one, not the other one that doesn't speak French. Thank you.

Hyundai's kicking off the new year with the arrival of the second-generation Kona crossover, packed with new and improved features fit to become your first ride for the first day of your driving life, whatever the reason.

Priced at 24,680,000 Korean Won (around $25,000) plus additional costs, the all-new, second-generation Kona is the evolution of Hyundai's first-ever compact SUV sold in the Korean market and although no longer as compact as it looks because its youngest brother, the Casper, takes the spot, it's still worth enough to humiliate crossovers like the Nissan Kicks and the Toyota Yaris Cross in a heartbeat.

Beginning with the design, the new Kona adopts the Staria's front face, which is rather unorthodox because with Hyundai took a liking to the Staria's front face, they've decided to plaster it on newer and future models like this and last year's Grandeur GN7. Apart from the face, the sleek side view and the rear lamps inspired by the IONIQ 6 really made a clear statement about the all-new Kona, and when kitted with the N Line variant, it's the first impression in a nut shack.

Inside, the new model matches the theme of today's Hyundai interiors while jam-packed with heaps of gadgets to play with. On the driver's side, you will be greeted by the massive split horizontal monitor where the 12.3-inch instrumental cluster and the 12.3-inch touchscreen mean business for the all-new Kona. The gear lever is positioned near the steering wheel rather than below, just like the new Grandeur, it's got dual full-auto aircon, ambient lighting, and other stuff you can find on the new model. In terms of spacing, the all-new Kona is slightly more spacious compared to the previous model thanks to the added wheelbase provided by its new platform. It's packed with smart features such as the Digital Key 2 Touch and the Smart Power Tailgate for added convenience.

Petrol and hybrid are the only powertrain choices offered in the all-new Kona at launch. On the petrol side, it's offered with a choice of a Smartstream G 2.0L and the powerful Smartstream G 1.6T engine. The one with the Smartstream G 1.6T engine produces 198PS of power and 27kgf-m of torque. They're all mated to an 8-speed AT and can be fitted with an HTRAC All-Wheel-Drive system for better driving on and off the road. Handy if you're itching to have a picnic at Hannibal's.

The FF-only Kona Hybrid's Smartstream G 1.6 petrol engine is bolted into a 32kW electric motor and Li-ion battery as well as a regenerative braking system, producing 141PS of power output. The only gearbox offered in the hybrid is a 6-speed DCT. Despite being FF-only, the Kona Hybrid comes with e-Motion Drive and rear multilink suspension for a dramatic driving feel that can upset the Nissan Kicks full stop.

Coupled with the Hyundai Smart Sense and parking assist features, the all-new Kona is by no means the safest compact crossover in its class, which is rather surprising and annoying at the same time for the yuppies behind the wheel.

The second-generation Hyundai Kona truly is all-new from top to toe and it really is a class apart compared to the likes of the Nissan Kicks and the Toyota Yaris Cross. Like it or not, this is the Kona that everybody deserves, and looks like Hyundai is doubling down on the all-new Kona. That's the new normal for you.
