5th-Generation Toyota Prius (WH60/65)

From its first launch at the end of 1997 onwards, the Toyota Prius is forever known as the originator of the hybrid race, and thanks to the Prius, the motoring industry is following the Prius's example, reducing carbon emissions every mile away. Built to tackle the challenges of the new normal in this unstable world, the Prius of the Reiwa Era was born, and Toyota's ringing in the new year with the fifth-generation Prius.

Starting at 3.2 million Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the all-new, fifth-generation, Toyota Prius, is the newest take on the pioneering hybrid vehicle that started it all. It's built to tackle the challenges of the new normal in this unstable world we live in and being the first Prius of the Reiwa Era, it's a challenge accepted.

Beginning with the design, the iconic Prius silhouette was retained in this new version while incorporating a sleek and stylish design fit for the new normal. On the front, it dons one similar to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which is rather intriguing because Toyota began copying the front face of modern Ferraris in cars like the bZ4x and the recent Crown Crossover. On the rear end, well, it really is even and squared to perfection. The questionable but futuristic styling really made a statement about a Prius built for the Reiwa era.

The new interior signaled the end of an era where Prius speedos are positioned in the middle because, unlike past generations, the new Prius has its instrumental panel positioned to the driver's side while the touchscreen positioning is highly reminiscent of BMWs of today. The gear lever is now positioned below rather than into the dashboard and with numerous features implemented on the driver's side, the new Prius is now civilized and sensible for everyone behind the wheel. Oh, and hope you got your USB-C cables handy because there are no Type-A outlets in the new Prius. Just USB-C outlets only.

In terms of spacing, it's slightly more spacious compared to the previous model, meaning there's slightly enough room for your recent purchases from the thrift store if you catch my drift.

Running on the second-generation TNGA platform while being coupled with MacPherson struts at the front and a double wishbone setup at the rear, the new Prius drives better than the previous model and it's more rigid as well, making it the Prius you would really like to drive on a daily basis. Add an e-Four system and it adds some all-weather capabilities to the new model.

Under the hood, the new Prius is offered only with an M20A-FXS 2.0L Dynamic Force engine bolted to an electric motor and a Li-ion battery. It produces up to 193PS of power output and while mated to a CVT, fuel economy is around 31.5km/L for FF models while 4WD models get up to 29.2km/L, based on WLTC mode standards. A PHEV variant will arrive later this spring.

If you're on a business trip, you can rent the 1.8L model via KINTO for 16,610 Yen per month but it's only applicable for the KINTO Unlimited plan. The 1.8L rental car has 32.6km/L of fuel economy. Should cover your sensible business trips across Japan.

Being the Reiwa-era Prius, the new model's Toyota Safety System was greatly expanded and revised with the addition of the rear vehicle proximity notification and secondary collision brake. These new features, along with familiar advanced driving assistance systems offered as well as the Toyota Teammate - Advanced Park, made the new Prius safer than ever, although there might be some downsides for speedo boys behind the wheel. Fiat e-Doblo (K9)

Italy's answer to the Renault Kangoo, the Fiat Doblo, gained a full model change with the arrival of the first-ever e-Doblo electric MPV.

For the first time in Doblo history, an electrified version was offered and that said, this would be the only powertrain offered in the passenger-oriented version of the all-new Fiat Doblo. Of course, you can have petrol or diesel variants but that's reserved for commercial use. The main focus is the passenger version of the all-new Doblo and this Italian alternative to the Renault Kangoo has turned with numerous features to cater to today's Italian families.

Beginning with the exterior design, the Doblo's front face features a grilleless design for a cleaner look compared to its predecessor and having a car with no grille is a good thing because grilles are so overrated. The side view can be easily mistaken for a Berlingo and as for the rear, looks okay so far. Overall, the exterior design is clean and subtle, just the way it is.

Step inside, the new Doblo is all business and no rocket science needed to understand how it works. On the driver's side, you have all the bare neccessities you'll need such as the 8-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, climate control, digital instrumental panel, HUD, and others. In terms of passenger space, it's slightly cramped compared to the previous Doblo, probably because of its electric powertrain.

Speaking of electric powertrain, the Launch Pack that costs 40 grand minus the incentives runs on a 50kWh battery pack and an electric motor. It generates 136PS of power, 260Nm of torque, 0-100kph in 11.2 seconds, 130kph top speed, and up to 282km of combined driving range in one full charge. Sounds modest, though, and when you take it for a spin, the e-Doblo behaves like a regular MPV. Safe as well thanks to its SAFETY PLUS Pack which comes with AEB, Lane Keeping, forward collision, and speed sign recognition.

With spacing the main weak point of the new e-Doblo, the clean design and so-called value for money really means business for the new model. Although it's hard to keep up against the Renault Kangoo, the new Fiat Doblo is all about getting ready for everything life throws at it.

Mercedes-Benz T-Class

The first-ever Mercedes-Benz T-Class has arrived as the German equivalent of the third-generation Renault Kangoo, which is odd because the Citan is meant to be the said equivalent. Why start another? Let's investigate.

Priced at 31,095 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever T-Class, like the Citan, is the German equivalent of the third-generation Renault Kangoo, and similarities aside, there are a few differences that separate the T-Class to the Citan because while the Citan is built for business purposes in mind, the T-Class is built for family use. Either way, you might want to color their rear badges to the colors of the German flag just as Kangoo owners did by painting the rear badge with the French flag motif.

Beginning with the design, the T-Class eschews the black cladding from the Citan in favor of a premium look. Still, despite the Mercedes front, it's basically a third-generation Renault Kangoo underneath, meaning it shares similar dimensions as the French minivan it was based on. Mind you, you can even have the T-Class equipped with double rear doors and when you have them, feel free to paint the rear badges to the colors of the German flag just like...well...you get the point.

As for the interior, it's just like the Citan but, again, with a more premium feel because of the choice of trim and upholstery with the most expensive versions come with matte silver trim elements, chrome trim strips on the tailgate, and many others. If you can recall, the latest Citan is bigger and roomier than its predecessor. In the first-ever T-Class, it's the same story but with more feel to it.

Like the Citan and the Kangoo, the T-Class is powered by a choice of petrol and diesel engines with the most powerful bearing the 1.3L petrol engine with 131PS of power, 240Nm of torque, and while mated to a 7G-DCT, 0-100kph takes about 11.6 seconds and flat out in 184kph. Kiss your Toyota Sienta goodbye with this one.

In terms of safety, the T-Class features a wide array of ADAS ranging from Hill Start Assist, Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Speed Limit Assist, and so on.

With the first-ever T-Class, the Citan's taken a premium approach but either way, they work just like its Renault Kangoo equivalent as expected.

Alfa Romeo Tonale

A concept turned reality, the first-ever Alfa Romeo Tonale is the Italian carmaker's first compact crossover that slots below the Stelvio. Serving as the indirect replacement for the Giulietta is no easy task because being a crossover, the Tonale could become the prime target for bashers and purists alike. The question is, should you want to drive one?

Priced at 36,000 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Alfa Romeo Tonale is another concept car turned reality, which is rather a pleasing move done by Alfa Romeo, but for some, it's another ad nauseam to add salt to their wounds because...why would Alfa Romeo need another crossover?

Beginning with the exterior, the Tonale stays faithful to the concept car but with a minor alternation involved before heading to the production block such as the doors. The concept car featured secret rear doors reminiscent of past Alfas. The production version, meanwhile, features normal rear doors to avoid people from door-related confusion. Although controversial, it's still enough to match the Tonale's concept.

The interior is modern Alfa Romeo stuff as expected, meaning this compact crossover is driver-focused. On the driver's view, you are greeted with key features such as the 12.3-inch instrumental cluster, 10.25-inch touch screen with smartphone connectivity and Amazon Alexa as well as OTA updates, and the Harman Kardon 14-speaker sound system. In terms of space, the Tonale is surprisingly more spacious than the Giulietta it replaces. What a twist.

Under the hood, the Tonale offers a choice of two petrol engines and a rather controversial 1.6 VGT-D diesel engine at launch with the first-ever PHEV variant arriving in the summer of 2023. The petrol variants come with 48V mild hybrid tech for the sake of electrification. The one with the 1.5 VGT 48V-Hybrid powertrain mated to a 7-speed TCT produces 160PS of power, 240Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 8.8 seconds, and a top speed of 212kph. The one with the 1.6 VGT-D engine has a combined fuel economy of 5.3L/100km, which sounds great but sadly, this is the new normal, and types of diesel are criminalized.

What about dynamics, while being offered only as a front-wheel-drive vehicle at launch with the PHEV later on with its Q4 four-wheel-drive system included, the Tonale feels somewhat easy to drive despite being a crossover SUV. With the most direct steering ratio in the segment, perfect weight balance, brake-by-wire braking, Brembo brake calipers, Alfa DNA, and e-LSD, the Tonale behaves like a hot hatch, which is surprisingly unorthodox in a car like this. Again, what a twist.

In terms of safety, the Tonale is classified as Level 2 autonomy thanks to its front camera, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering, and Traffic Jam Assist systems. Combined with Blind Spot Detection, Emergency Braking, Attention Assist, and a 360-degree view monitor, among many others, the Tonale is all about getting concerned on the road, although speedo boys may end up running scared when autonomy kicks in.

Why would Alfa Romeo need another crossover? Truth be told, it's all about profits and the arrival of the first-ever Tonale made a clear statement that with its shock demand, it's becoming the Alfa for the masses due to its reasonable starting price. Whichever path it chooses, the Tonale is all about taking things seriously like every crossover should. Although not a decent alternative for the defunct Giulietta, it's still worth driving it on a daily basis.

Dodge Hornet

Remember the time when Dodge made the Caliber and the Nitro? They were rehashes of the Jeep Compass and Patriot that ended up on the wrong turn at Albuquerque. With them behind the rearview mirror several years ago, it looks like Dodge is getting a second shot at making a compact crossover, this time with Alfa Romeo's help again.

Starting at 31,590 US Dollars plus additional costs, the first-ever Dodge Hornet crossover is an Alfa Romeo Tonale that does things that the Tonale can't. Although built in the same factory in Italy, the Hornet's got more character, power, and beef than the Tonale it was based on because this crossover wants to do Dodge things rather than Alfa Romeo things, akin to the Giulietta-based Dart.

Beginning with the design, the Hornet's silhouette is reminiscent of the Alfa Romeo Tonale it was based on as well as the sides but when you check its front and rear, you will notice that they are inspired by the Dodge Charger. The same goes for the interior as well because it has the same driver-focused minimalist approach as the Tonale until you check the vents and the dashboard to prove its point.

At launch, the Dodge Hornet is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that produces 265hp of power while mated to a 9-speed AT. With the AWD system in play, the GT model is capable of going from 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds, more than enough to kiss the Alfa Romeo Tonale goodbye on the road and track. Later on, Dodge will offer the R/T model with the Dodge-first PHEV powertrain that bolts the turbocharged 1.3L engine to an electric motor and a 6-speed AT. With the PowerShot fired, it unleashes 285hp of power, sprinting from 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds. Now that's fast for a baby Dodge SUV.

Because of the power output that upsets the Tonale by a long shot, the Hornet feels somewhat addictive to drive with the AWD system armed. Although it feels bulky to drive compared to the Tonale, it still behaves like it in an exciting way and you can really spend lots of time getting to know the Tonale that was dubbed in American English.

In terms of safety, the Hornet, like the Tonale, is classified as Level 2 autonomy thanks to its front camera, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering, and Traffic Jam Assist systems. Combined with Blind Spot Detection, Emergency Braking, Attention Assist, and a 360-degree view monitor, among many others, it is all about getting concerned on the road, although speedo boys may end up running scared when autonomy kicks in.

The Dodge Hornet may be an Alfa Romeo Tonale that was Americanized straight to the core but because of the Dodge mantra, the Hornet is the faster, more powerful alternative to the Tonale. Although it doesn't have the credentials of Dodge's First Family, it's more than enough to become part of the Dodge family. Welcome to the family, son.

BMW X1 (U11) and iX1

The baby BMW crossover, the X1, is now on its third generation and it also spawned its all-electric equivalent, the iX1. So, what's it all about the all-new X1? Let's have a quick dive into this new model.

The third-generation X1 (priced at 41,400 Euros plus additional costs) and the first-ever iX1 (priced at 55,000 Euros plus additional costs) are signs of the times because as crossovers are heavily treated like Hollywood superhero flicks, it looks like there will be a pileup of potential customers who would like to have their hands on this newest version, like it or not.

Beginning with the design, the X1 is nothing more of a crossover equivalent of today's 2-Series Active Tourer because when you take a gander at both of these machines, it's fairly obvious that they both share the same large grilles, which became the new normal for BMW amid the bashing from purists starting to turn away from the brand in favor of Mercedes or Audi. Although the large grille is a classic BMW dirty tactic, the all-new X1 sure loves to play dirty but more with that later on because it's time to observe the interior.

The interior is broadly similar to the one found on the latest 2-Series Active Tourer as well, meaning you are greeted with the new BMW Curved Display that takes centerstage on the driver's side and because it runs on the latest BMW Operating System 8, it has tons of noticeable features, including the rather annoying voice control which works like Alexa. Since the new model removed the storage space beneath the armrest in favor of a floating center console, it's going to be challenging to store your bare necessities. In terms of spacing, it's not half bad compared to the previous model.

Because it now runs on the new FF platform derived from the latest 1-Series, the third-generation X1 feels more of an improvement compared to the previous X1 but not as cool as what a BMW should because with this, the 2-Series Active Tourer, the 2-Series Gran Coupe, and today's 1-Series, they've been treated like outcasts because of their front-wheel-drive layout that is proven to be treason to the BMW heritage. Even slapping it with the optional xDrive system couldn't help but is still worth being an all-rounder.

In the normal X1, it's offered with a choice of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains for the first time in an X1. The X1 xDrive30e variant saw its 1.5L turbocharged engine bolted to a 130kW electric motor, generating a total power output of 326PS, and 477Nm of torque. Mated to a 7-speed Steptronic, it does 0-100kph in 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 205kph.

The iX1's electric powertrain, meanwhile, features two electric motors and a 68kW Li-ion battery pack, making it capable of producing a total power output of 313PS, 494Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 5.6 seconds, and a Japan-ish 180kph top speed. As for the range, it's good for 437km on one full charge and it takes less than an hour to reach 80% battery capacity while charging at a 130kW outlet.

Both the new X1 and the iX1 are armed with the most advanced safety features offered including the Driving Assistant package with AEB, passive cruise control, Parking Assistant, and others.

Although it's slightly an improvement compared to the previous X1, the new model sure knows how to make a statement regarding its controversially large grille shared from today's 2-Series Active Tourer, but whatever the verdict may be, both the new X1 and the first-ever iX1 are in for a good time for a long time.

Subaru Crosstrek (GUD)

Served as the replacement for the XV, the first-ever Subaru Crosstrek picks up where the XV left off by catering to the most adventurous people with its style, interior, signature Subaru driving feel, and tech, not necessarily in order.

Priced at 2,695,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the first-ever Subaru Crosstrek broke the tradition from its Impreza-derived XV predecessor because honestly, it feels like a matured crossover hatch that is officially independent of being an Impreza offspring.

Starting with the exterior design, the Crosstrek can be easily mistaken for one of its main rivals, the Mazda CX-30, when you take a gander at its front while the side view carried over from its XV predecessor and the rear view looks suspiciously similar to today's Outback. Approaching through different angles, you can't really say what's going on with the Crosstrek's exterior, but either way, it's a sign of maturity.

On the interior, the Crosstrek features the same Tesla-esque dashboard from today's Levorg, meaning speedo boys won't like the tall touchscreen on it but hey, some speedo boys are starting to admire this massive screen on the dashboard, especially when it comes with smartphone connectivity, dials for the radio, and clicks for the aircon.

In terms of spacing, the Crosstrek is as big as the XV it replaces, meaning it still has a modest space for five people, 315 liters of boot space with rear seats present, and various seating arrangements that can accommodate various situations. Although outdoorsy in spirit, it's all work and all play for the Crosstrek.

Under the hood, the Crosstrek is powered by a 2.0L e-BOXER mild hybrid powertrain where the 145PS 2.0L boxer 4-cylinder engine is bolted to a 10kW MA1 electric motor and Li-ion battery. Mated to a CVT gearbox, it has a fuel economy of 16.4km/L for FF variants while AWD variants get 15.8km/L.

With the AWD variant with X-MODE, the Crosstrek behaves with a classic Subaru driving feel, giving the impression of heading towards the "west of weird" for some curiosity. With the Subaru Global Platform, front struts, rear double wishbones, ventilated disc brakes, and Rack and Pinion steering, driving the Crosstrek is almost no drama.

In the interest of safety, the Crosstrek features an updated EyeSight system featuring a wide-angle mono camera working in tandem with the existing stereo camera, making it capable of detecting moving objects to make use of its pre-crash brake and other ADAS offered.

No longer the Impreza offspring compared to its XV predecessor, the first-ever Crosstrek is a matured crossover hatchback that is all about being ready for another road trip thanks to its numerous improvements compared to the XV, although having a fuel-efficient FF variant can be debatable as if. This crossover hatchback has grown.

Lexus RX (A10/A15/H16/H17)

The Lexus RX, the forefather of luxury crossovers, is now on its fifth generation, and it promises to be the most revolutionary RX ever made because of its powerhouse choice of powertrains, highly advanced tech, and the most luxurious features to date.

With prices starting at 6,640,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the all-new, fifth-generation, Lexus RX is the latest evolution of the forefather of luxury crossovers. How's it going right now is entirely up to this newest version, which is packed with new features that made it the best RX ever made.

Beginning with the design, the new RX carries the new-generation Lexus design DNA inherited from the current NX, so you can think of it as its big brother. While the controversial front face is the signature Lexus moment, the rear view can be easily mistaken for the defunct Infiniti QX70 while the rear view can be vaguely mistaken for an Opel Adam. Despite its debatable design, it's still the best of both worlds and the same goes for the sporty F SPORT variant with sporty aesthetics slapped all over.

The new interior adopts the Tazuna Concept approach to make it minimal and driver-focused. The Remote Touch from the previous model's gone because it now features a touchscreen on the dashboard with a set of dials on it for volume control and others as well as USB-C outlets, ambient lighting system, available Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system, available Qi wireless charging port, and others. Some would find it rocket science but it's worth fun toying with its features, given that you don't want to spend too much time on the voice control a la Alexa.

On the passenger side, this five-seater is more spacious in boot space and legroom terms than the previous model thanks to its bigger dimensions. This should be more than enough to escort VIPS while carrying sensitive cargo like a classified courier on a mission.

Running on the improved TNGA platform, the all-new RX behaves better than the previous model it replaces, and no matter which driving mode you're on, be it in its most comfortable setting or in the sportiest setting (if you're in the F SPORT variant), it always leaves a lasting impression everywhere. Although it feels Audi-ish to drive, the new RX is all about making a statement on those behind the wheel.

Speaking of powerhouse choice of powertrains; the all-new RX is offered with a choice of a turbo, PHEV, and the first ever turbo-hybrid exclusive for the RX500 F SPORT Performance. The RX350's T25A-FTS 2.4L turbo engine produces 279PS of power, 430Nm of torque, and while mated to an 8-speed AT, it has 11.8km/L of fuel economy. In the first-ever RX450h+ PHEV, the A25A-FX5 2.5L petrol engine is connected to two electric motors generating a total of 309PS of power, and while mated to a CVT gearbox, it has 18.8km/L of fuel economy. Lastly, the first-ever RX500 F SPORT Performance combines the 2.4L T24A-FTS turbocharged engine to two electric motors and a nickel-metal battery, producing a sporty 371PS of power and while mated to a 6-speed AT, it has 14.4km/L of fuel economy. All are calculated by WLTC Mode standards.

Because the world is in the middle of the new normal, the all-new RX comes with Lexus Safety System +, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems such as Proactive Driving Assist, Pre-Collision Safety, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Advanced Drive, Advanced Park, and Safe Exit Assist, among many others.

After two decades of evolution, the fifth-generation Lexus RX feels like it had reached its zenith. It's not just an evolution, it's more like a revolution as some would say. Renault Korea XM3 E-TECH Hybrid

Renault Samsung Motors is no more. It's now named Renault Korea Motors and this move is similar to what happened when General Motors dumped the Daewoo name over a decade ago for the creation of the GM Korea company. Name change aside, this is the first vehicle launched under the new company name and it's basically the hybrid version of the popular crossover coupe, the XM3.

With prices starting at 32,350,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the XM3 E-TECH Hybrid is the hybrid version of the popular crossover coupe sold in Korea, the XM3. Since its Renault Arkana equivalent available worldwide comes with the said hybrid powerplant, the newest addition made them say this should have been implemented when the XM3 was first launched two years ago.

Compared to its petrol equivalent, the XM3 E-TECH Hybrid features a different front face similar to the Renault Arkana sold to Europe but with the signature typhoon badge, the once proud logo of the former Renault Samsung Motors before its name change, slapped all over.

The interior is the same story as well. Drivers are greeted with the 9.3-inch touch screen as well as the longer 10.25 TFT display which takes place from the typical speedos. There are knobs for the air-con as well. On the passenger side, this five-seater is not bad to make a living out of it and the boot space of up to 513 liters with the secret compartment opened means it can carry anything when taken for a family outing or for business in the case of TNVS or deliveries.

The E-TECH Hybrid powertrain saw the 86PS 1.6L GTe engine mated to two electric motors and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel economy is a combined 17.4km/L, which is less than its main rival, the second-generation Kia Niro.

As expected, the XM3 E-TECH Hybrid, like its petrol equivalent, is front-wheel-drive-only, and because it runs on Megane components, it behaves almost like the Megane in a good way and it's basically not old-fashioned by the way it moves.

In the interest of safety, the XM3 E-TECH Hybrid is packed with a wide array of safety features such as Highway & Traffic Jam Companion, Adaptive cruise control (with Stop & Go), Active emergency braking system, Blind spot warning, Lane departure warning, and lane guard system, and many others.

Although it's not as efficient as the Kia Niro, the XM3 E-TECH Hybrid is the XM3 the Koreans would like to have when it was first launched. Speaking of which, it's hard to accept the biggest change of what was known to be South Korea's motoring rising star now that the Samsung name was removed from the history of Korean motoring. 

Renault Korea Motors...this company name change feels like a sign of things to come and the XM3 E-TECH Hybrid is one of them.

Renault Austral

The Renault Austral is the much-needed replacement for the Kadjar which promises to be more premium, more practical, and more enjoyable to drive than the one it replaces. So, let's take a deep dive into Renault's newest midsize crossover, which is basically a French X-Trail for numerous reasons.

Priced at 33,400 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Renault Austral is basically the French equivalent of the Nissan X-Trail, just like the old Kadjar it replaces. Despite the Japanese connection underneath, courtesy of the alliance, the Austral is as French as the France Rugby team who aren't afraid to get themselves dirty. Dirty aside, the Austral has a clean slate due to its electrification implemented, making it capable of the new normal.

Starting with the exterior, there's nothing show-off about the Austral's exterior, apart from the first-ever Esprit Alpine variant (which is the new name of sporty variants that used to be called RS Line) with sporty detailing. With modern design DNA flowing through its rugged looks, the Austral is quintessentially Renault from top to bottom without the drama.

Come to the interior, the Austral showcases its French side because of its bent-over touch-screen in the middle reminiscent of the aged iPad that you've accidentally bent but still functional. Sounds unorthodox but the real shocker is that the bent touch screen in the middle runs on Google, meaning it's a bent Android tablet with plenty of features to play with such as Google Maps, Amazon Music, and Waze, among many others. Apart from the bent touch-screen panel, the Austral features Harman Kardon high-fidelity sound with 12 speakers and sound spatialization technology for a much clearer listening experience for various reasons.

Asking about space, the Austral is a five-seater crossover just like the Kadjar and because it's bigger than the Kadjar it replaces, it's surprisingly roomier as well. Even the boot space saw some bump into it with up to 1525 liters of boot space with the rear seats folded down. With this much space, the Austral is a free-for-all crossover fit for various situations.

Despite being an SUV, the Austral is front-wheel-drive only, meaning it's only capable of driving through city streets and some dirt, but not too much dirt, and because it's now running on an entirely new platform, the Austral drives slightly better than the Kadjar it replaces.

Coupled with the MULTI-SENSE and the 4CONTROL Advanced four-wheel steering, the Austral behaves like a midsize sedan for various reasons. There's an optional Extended Grip Pack which adds two new modes into the MULTI-SENSE such as "Snow" and "All roads", meaning this crossover is ready for weekends with Hannibal. It's a French thing to do for a crossover like this.

Because of the new platform's electrification goals, the Austral features a 1.2L turbo mild hybrid petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed MT or a CVT, and the 200PS 1.2L E-TECH Hybrid mated to a 7-speed AT capable of a combined 4.6L/100 km of fuel economy. Mind you, this E-TECH Hybrid powertrain may be slightly less powerful than the Nissan X-TRAIL e-4ORCE but its fuel efficiency is worth winning for the French.

Because this is a crossover built for the new normal, the Renault Austral features a total of 32 ADAS that can be grouped together into three categories; driving, parking, and safety. These include Active Driver Assist, level 2 autonomy, Automated Park Assist, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Prevention, Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, RCTA, and Occupant Safe Exit, among many others.

So, the first-ever Renault Austral. What can I say? Although it's front-wheel-drive only, it's surprisingly the evolved version of the Kadjar that is proven to be worth driving than the Nissan X-TRAIL it was based on, despite being two seats less. Looks like the French are on the roll with this newest Renault crossover built for the new normal.

Daihatsu Tanto FunCross

With the fourth-generation Daihatsu Tanto range gained their minor model change, a third entry was added and it's basically a direct rival to the Suzuki Spacia Gear; it's called the Daihatsu Tanto FunCross and it's the rugged version of the fourth-generation Daihatsu Tanto.

With prices starting at 1,721,500 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the Tanto FunCross is the rugged version of the fourth-generation Daihatsu Tanto that serves as the direct replacement for the recently discontinued Wake. Because this is basically a fourth-generation Tanto, the FunCross is about 35mm shorter than the Wake but similarly sized compared to the Suzuki Spacia Base, its main rival.

Beginning with the design, the FunCross features a rugged exterior with a tough front face and black claddings on the side and back. Although rugged, it's still considered by observers as "cute", just like the rest of the Tanto family.

On the interior, the FunCross's seats feature a camouflage design and some orange panelings that is in sync with its rugged design. Although they're somewhat show-off, the signature Tanto traits are still in this model; the signature pillarless door on the passenger side, space for four people, various seating arrangements, and various compartments to store your stuff, among many others. Word of advice, though, there are USB-C ports involved in this car so you better bring the right plug while on the go.


The Tanto FunCross runs on the DNGA architecture just like the fourth-generation Tanto range. Along with the rack-and-pinion steering, front MacPherson Strut suspension, ventilated disc front brakes, and leading trailing rear brakes, not to mention the torsion beams for FF models and 3-link rear suspension for 4WD models, the FunCross behaves pretty much like a Tanto despite its rugged looks, as expected. Although made for the great outdoors, it's still a city car that fits well with the Tokyo traffic.

Under the hood, the FunCross runs on the KF 660cc 3-cylinder DOHC 12V EFI engine in naturally aspirated or turbo flavors. Mated to a D-CVT, the fuel economy is up to 21.9km/L based on WLTC Mode standards, which is surprisingly more fuel efficient than the Suzuki Spacia Gear. That sounds like a win for Daihatsu.

Like most Tanto models, the Tanto FunCross features Smart Assist, a suite of active safety features ranging from collision avoidance, detection, driving load reduction, and parking. Along with its full LED headlamps, VSC, TRC, CTA, emergency stop signal, ABS, TAF body, SRS airbag, and ISOFIX, you got yourself a safe Tanto for all walks of life.

The Daihatsu Tanto FunCross may be more of a rugged version of the fourth-generation Tanto but when compared to the Suzuki Spacia Gear, looks like this one is the slightly clear winner because of its budget and fuel economy that begs to be driven for more. Although the rest of the Daihatsu Tanto lineup is now more fuel-efficient than the Suzuki Spacia family, don't call it a comeback just yet because...well, you get the point.

Acura Integra (DE4)

The Integra, a favorite among speedo boys, was revived as a posh equivalent of the Honda Civic FL1. It really took the nerve to revive an iconic nameplate for a new entry-level Acura everybody can afford but what's it all about?

Priced at 30,800 US Dollars plus additional costs, the return of the Acura Integra is an arduous task to do because while the nameplate is heavily synonymous with the speedo boys in the neighborhood, this reboot can be easily likened to a plate of chop suey you ate at home because it was met with mixed results.

Beginning with the design, the new Integra looks more like a baby TLX for obvious reasons with the rearview reminiscent of an ancient Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Overall, it looks more like a commoner's Acura even with the Integra markings can't help. Mind you, the Integra markings on the front and back are an ode to the previous model, the previously-known last-generation Acura Integra before it got replaced by the RSX, which is known globally as the final-generation Honda Integra. Wordiness aside, the fastback styling made an impression.

Asked about the interior, the new Integra has a similar modern Honda interior DNA found in the Civic FL1, meaning it's about as driver-focused as the one it was based on. On the passenger side, its five-seater capacity means it works rather well as a family car but why would someone want to turn the Integra into a family car? This was made for road trips with your pals itching for a game at Round 1 or going for broke at the shopping center. Just don't bother toying around with the Amazon Alexa feature on it. It might kill the mood of everybody around you.

Speaking of shopping, the fastback styling results in a decent boot space good enough for your tailgating parties with your mates while the rear seats can be folded down for various situations such as carrying sensitive stuff to your clients or turning it into a nice little sleeper while on vacation.

The beating heart of the all-new Acura Integra is the 1.5L VTEC Turbo engine, which kicks out a decent 200hp of power and 192lb-ft of torque. Mated to a sport-tuned CVT gearbox with paddle shifters, it delivers a combined 33MPG rating, which sounds good for long trips, but for speedo boys looking to bring the Integra to its bosom potential, a 6-speed manual gearbox is offered with 30MPG combined fuel economy. This gearbox comes with Rev-Match Control as well as a helical LSD that helps transfer maximum power to the road.

Asked about dynamics, the new Integra behaves pretty much like the Honda Civic FL1 in various ways thanks to its sport-tuned suspension setup and its Integrated Dynamics System with four driving modes with a customizable Individual mode that lets you mix and match the dynamics.

Although speedo boys aren't happy with it, the new Integra is equipped with AcuraWatch safety and driver-assistive technologies such as CMBS, RDM, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, LKAS, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, Traffic Jam Assist, blind spot information system, rear cross-traffic monitor, and low-speed braking control.

The modern-day reboot of the Acura Integra may not be the revival they were hoping for, just like reboots of classic movies, but for a fancy equivalent of the Honda Civic FL1, it feels rather impressive on various levels. For daily driving to weekend getaways, the new Integra is all about delivering its first impression with explanations. Welcome to the new normal.

The Nissan Serena is now on its sixth generation and it's ready to tackle against the newest versions of the Toyota Noah/Voxy and Honda StepWGN minivans with its revised design, interior, and fuel-efficient powertrain worth scratching their roofs. Time to have a peek at the new model.

Priced at 2,768,700 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the all-new, sixth-generation, Nissan Serena can be somewhat costlier to own than the new Toyota Noah but cheaper to own than the new Honda StepWGN by comparison, meaning this is the second choice of the three new Japanese minivans launched in 2022. For a minivan that is right on the money in today's economy, there's so much to talk about it, starting with its new design.

While retaining the boxy design from its predecessors, the new design features a dramatic but radical front face some would call controversial, probably because of the updated expression of Nissan's V-Motion grille. In the normal versions, it looks right but on the high-end Highway Star and e-POWER Luxion versions, the front grille's enlarged to make a huge statement, even with its optional Front Dynamic Pack on. The AUTECH variant, meanwhile, is a massive dark blue showoff in both urban and rural environments. Whichever Serena you're on, the new design made a huge impression, albeit with divided results.

Amid the polarizing exterior, the new interior is something the new Serena C28's worth proud of; the spacing that will upset the competition in its class. Sure, the driver's view is totally minimalized while the instrumental panel's digitalized a la Nissan Note, the gear lever was replaced by a set of buttons, and the aircon features touch panels, which is worth a challenge for those wearing gloves, but in terms of passenger space, this is the most family-friendly Serena ever built.

Whether it's a six-seater or an eight-seater, the best-in-class interior and boot space are what made the Serena C28 ahead of the curve. With the two-way tailgate that can be opened either the whole door or the rear window as well as the Hands-Free Auto Slide Door carried over from the C27 predecessor, it's still the most practical Serena ever built for modern Japanese families.

Asked about performance, the Nissan Serena C28 is powered by two powertrains. Starting with the 2.0L MR20DD petrol engine, it produces 150PS of power and 200Nm of torque. Mated to a CVT gearbox, it delivers a 13kmpl combined fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. The e-POWER variants, meanwhile, saw a size increase to its petrol engine that powers the electric motor from the C27's 1.2L to the new model's HR14DDe 1.4L engine. With the new 1.4L petrol engine powering the 120kW EM57 electric motor, it delivers up to 20.6km/L combined fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. Although not as fuel-efficient as the Noah, it beats the StepWGN e:HEV by a razor-thin margin. Because this is e-POWER, it has a little kick on that thing when you put your foot down.

While the suspension setup is the most enjoyable to drive for a minivan thanks to its rear multilink suspension, the Nissan Serena C28 is, by all means, the safest Serena ever built because of its ProPilot 2.0 carried from the Skyline V37. ProPilot 2.0 uses a wide array of sensors capable of hands-free driving while cruising in a single lane, although drivers still need to keep their eyes on the road. It's reminiscent of Tesla's Autopilot in various ways but you get the point. With the ProPilot 2.0 coupled with noteworthy advanced driving aids around it, it's the most technologically-advanced Serena you'll ever drive.

With its questionable looks, best-in-class interior space, the enlarged e-POWER powertrain, the most advanced safety features fitted to a minivan like this, and decent value for money, the Nissan Serena C28 truly is a Japanese minivan adapted for the new normal. As a decent rival to the newest versions of the Toyota Noah/Voxy and the Honda StepWGN, the Nissan Serena C28 is a tour de force in the minivan market with a little drama. Is this the best Japanese minivan you would like to drive?

Hyundai Grandeur/Azera GN7

Once the icon of the late 80s, the Hyundai Grandeur is now on its seventh generation and this all-new model is all about honoring the past while embracing the future in the age of a new normal where sedans are becoming endangered species thanks to the rise of the crossovers.

Priced at 37,160,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the all-new, seventh-generation, Hyundai Grandeur is all about the past, present, and future colliding together in this bold new take of Hyundai's flagship saloon that became the status symbol for every Korean businessman when the first model was launched in 1986.

Beginning with the design, the front view of the all-new Grandeur features a Staria-styled nose because the people who designed it were enamored by the Staria's futuristic looks so they decided to copy it on the new Grandeur. Apart from the Staria-styled nose, the rear view draws inspiration from the IONIQ 6 while the side view is heavily inspired by the first-generation Grandeur. They're right about celebrating the Grandeur lineage with this design, though.

On the inside, the all-new Grandeur is all about futuristic in every detail as the dashboard features two touch screens; above for the connected car Navigation Cockpit (making its debut on this car) and below for climate control, which adds complexity for those who got their hands cleaned with their hand sanitizer. There are two knobs that can adjust the volume or change radio stations, a set of buttons for easy use, HUD, and a steering wheel reminiscent of the one from the first-generation Grandeur. What's complexing is that the gear lever is now positioned below the steering wheel, an ode to the first-generation Grandeur as well.

While the driver's side is all business, the passenger space is the real standout for the all-new Grandeur because of its slightly longer wheelbase compared to the previous IG model, meaning it's got more space for the VIPs to relax in their sweet spot. As for boot space, it's not so bad for carrying even the most sensitive stuff bosses can only understand.

Because it now runs on the same bits and bobs from the Kia K8, the all-new Grandeur is subtler and more enjoyable to drive than the previous model, making it the most sophisticated Grandeur to drive. Coupled with the electronically controlled suspension with road preview and HTRAC all-wheel-drive, the Grandeur delivers the impression of driving an outrageously-priced European import, which is rather surprising for a Korean-made luxury sedan. Although not in a Mercedes level of luxuriousness, it's a bit Audi-ish to drive, to be honest.

Like the Kia K8, the Grandeur GN7 features four powertrains such as the Smartstream 2.5L petrol engine producing 198PS of power, the Smartstream LPG 3.5L engine produces 240PS of power, and 7.8km/L of combined fuel economy, the hybrid variant with the Smartstream 1.6L turbo hybrid engine on it produces 180PS of power and 18km/L of combined fuel economy, and the flagship Smartstream G 3.5L petrol engine producing 300PS of power and 10.4km/L of combined fuel economy. All variants are mated to an 8-speed AT while the hybrid variant is mated to a six-speed AT.

In the interest of safety, the Grandeur GN7 features the latest version of Hyundai Smart Sense, which features numerous active safety features such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blindspot View Monitor, Safe Exit Assist, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and many more.

The Hyundai Grandeur GN7 is all about honoring the past while embracing the future in the age of a new normal. Having been around for 36 years, this latest generation is proof that the Grandeur is here to stay, whatever it takes, and looks like the Koreans are not kidding with it. The sedan that redefined South Korea is now reborn.

Subaru Rex (A201F)

Back in the 70s, Subaru made a kei car called the Rex and it lasted for three generations until it was replaced by the Vivio. Now, Subaru revived the Rex, and this time, this is not a kei car. It's a compact SUV that is essentially a rebadged version of today's Daihatsu Rocky.

Priced at 1,820,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the new Subaru Rex has nothing in common with the kei car of the same name from a long time ago. It's just a modern-day Daihatsu Rocky with a Subaru badge on it, meaning for those who want a Daihatsu Rocky but their nearest dealership is a Subaru dealership, this could be their chance.

With its RAV4-esque interior, Kia-esque steering wheel, dashboard similar to the Audi A1, dramatic and functional instrumental panel, and spacing for five people, it seems that the Subaru Rex of the Reiwa era really is like the Daihatsu Rocky of the Reiwa era. It works just like the real thing but there's one catch to this Subaru-fied Daihatsu Rocky as some observers figured out.

Unlike the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize equivalents, the new Subaru Rex is offered only in front-wheel-drive and a standard WA-VE 1.2L three-cylinder 12-valve DOHC engine that produces 87PS of power, 113Nm of torque, and when mated to a CVT gearbox with a 7-speed manual mode, it has a 20.7kmpl of fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. Good enough for some trips to a mom-and-pop shop.

Like the two compact SUVs it was based on, the Subaru Rex is packed with Smart Assist consisting of Advanced Safety Assist, Driving Assist, Parking Assist, and Headlamp Assist features. Safer than sorry, they said.

Two variants, one powertrain available. This is what the new Subaru Rex sums up really good and while it lacks something from the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize equivalents, it feels enough to drive one on a daily basis. So, if you want a Daihatsu Rocky but their nearest dealership is a Subaru dealership the Rex could be your answer.
