Ssangyong Rexton Sports

Ssangyong Motor Company rings out the new year with a brand new model and this one is, you guessed it, a midsize sport utility truck that is the evolution of South Korea's first sport utility truck since the Musso Sports of 2001. Meet the Rexton Sports, the pickup derivative of last year's G4 Rexton.

2018 Ssangyong Rexton Sports

Let's have a quick history lesson first before getting to know more about Ssangyong's latest SUT. Back in 2001, Ssangyong brought us South Korea's first pickup, the Musso Sports (later called Musso SUT) and while the pickup body is new, it's actually a decade-old Musso underneath and it feels as refined as a PUJ that was still smoking the roads for a lifetime. In 2006 and 2012, there were the Actyon Sports and the Korando Sports and while they're known to be the modern-day equivalent of the banger truck it replaces, the bed seems a bit shorter than its predecessor and annoyingly not the best truck to live with.

Now, come 2018, Ssangyong finally called it quits on the Korando Sports and in return, uses the new and improved G4 Rexton, which was launched on Korean roads last year, for the basis of their best pickup yet, and here it is, it's their best-ever take on South Korea's first pickup truck or ute or bakkie, whatever you may call it.

Like I said, it was actually based on the G4 Rexton except that now, Ssangyong converted it into a pickup truck and the result is the one that used to be a crossover now comes with a rear bed possessing a biggest space than any of the Ssangyong sport trucks of yesteryears, capable of 1,011-litres of boot space, which is great for all work and all play, making it a not-so-dull pickup truck you can use every day. However, there's a big catch; it's not really a one-tonner because it can carry up to 400kg of payload, a hundred less than the Toyota Hilux's 500kg payload limit. Bad mark for Ssangyong there.

2018 Ssangyong Rexton Sports
Under the hood, the Rexton Sports uses the same LET 2.2L turbo diesel engine from its G4 derivative, capable of producing 181PS of power and 40.8kg-m of torque. But unlike the G4, it comes with a choice of a 6-speed manual or an AISIN 6-speed AT. In 2WD models, a 6MT variant can return combined fuel consumption of around 11km/L and that puts it awfully close to the Toyota Hilux.

If you go for the 4WD variant, the Rexton Sports comes with a 4TRONIC part-time 4WD system with three driving modes that can be picked at the flick of a switch. Those going for a muddy Sunday drive can go for the low-range 4WD because this is where it can unleash its offroad potential, which is great when you're taking shortcuts. Thanks to its high-tensile steel plates on the bodywork and ultra-high-tension quad frame, it's as tough as a kid who keeps on playing soccer even when his knees are covered in boo-boos. Brave stuff.

If you're on normal mode, you can switch it to 2WD and have a cozy driving on your point of interest, which is kind of average for a pickup truck of this magnitude. Not good but not bad either so it's a so-so, even for a truck that comes with double wishbones at the front and multilink suspension at the back. While navigating through traffic, the Rexton Sports comes ready with some safety tech such as Brake Assist System, Emergency Stop Signal, Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, and many others, standard and optional alike. When opting for some Smart Driving Package, your Rexton Sports can have Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Blind Spot Detection.

2018 Ssangyong Rexton Sports interior
2018 Ssangyong Rexton Sports interior
Unlike any other pickup truck, the Rexton Sports boast a very luxurious interior with very decent legroom at the back. It even has some fancy instrumental panel and an available sat-nav that comes with smartphone connectivity that works with iPhones (via CarPlay) and Android (via mirroring), giving you plenty of reasons to toy around with the interior but because the seats are leathery, if you take it for a leisurely drive around Pyeongchang in time for the games, your butt crack will fall victim to the icy menace when the leather seats are as freezing as snowballs. Better pull your pants up before seating on those, folks.

The Rexton Sports starts at 23,200,000 Korean Won and it comes with four trim levels and two drivetrains. So, thoughts on the new Rexton Sports? Well, it's basically an improvement compared to past Ssangyong pickups of yesteryears since the ancient Musso Sports, it's luxurious on the inside, surprisingly spacious, and surprisingly tough. Downside? The bed is not as tough as the Hilux's, less efficient than the Hilux, and the driving feel is average. With the advent of Rexton Sports, Ssangyong has positioned itself as the recreational vehicle specialist selling only vehicles bearing the Rexton, Korando, and Tivoli banners. The Chairman is now dead and in return, Ssangyong's lineup now only bears a truck, a minivan, and four crossovers. Looks like Ssangyong's going mainstream now and they only focus on recreational vehicles to win back profits.

Project CARS 2: DAYTONA!! On Ice

With news about Florida experiencing unusual snowy condition going on about a week now, I was just imaging if which part of Florida is heavily affected from a rare blizzard but to my hunch, I think Daytona Beach is just ended up being a winter wonderland and it would be the ideal time to simulate a surreal condition using Project CARS 2.

RS200

Thanks to LiveTrack 3.0, Project CARS 2 allows players to create weather conditions on their favorite racetracks to simulate what weather forecast is going to hit on their racetracks. You can make it rain in Dubai, snow in the Nurburgring, players can simulate even the most outlandish weather conditions on their favorite racetrack. Since Florida is on the subject right now due to extreme icy conditions Floridians are facing right now, I think it's time to simulate such an outlandish weather forecast and since a freezing Daytona might upset even stock cars that was born to drive in this place, how about picking something that is fit enough for this icy conditions? How about...a rally car for a change?

RS200

This is the rally car I've picked up from Project CARS 2's Fun Pack DLC, this is the legendary Ford RS200, a fire-spitting Group B rally car that causes quite a stir in its category where Quattros rule like gods until fatalities caused the demise of this category. So, what is the RS200 anyway, you might ask?

Known to be Ford's late entry to the WRC Group B category. As the name implies, it was limited to 200 units built for homologation purposes. Just before it reaches its prime time, the Group B giants from Audi, Peugeot, and Lancia are struggling and countless fatalities spelled the bitter end of this category. The result, with 200 units left, they made a road-going supercar capable of going 0-60mph in a sub six-second time and top speed around 150mph, all with full-time AWD.

RS200

It's kind of a shame that the Ford RS200 never got the chance to do some rallying ever since the Group B giants flung themselves out of the ring after multiple rally-related casualties but that's the life of being a rally car forged in a category where there's nothing to stop you making the maddest machines to tackle any road condition no matter how dirty it gets. It's fair to say that even with four wheel drive, the engine is mounted in the middle and the end result is a rally car that behaves pretty much like a rear wheel drive car do further concentration is advised when handling a technical vehicle even in icy winter conditions.

RS200

Driving a would-be rally car in a frozen Daytona that is ultra rare for Floridians facing right now can be somewhat a challenge and wet tires wouldn't do justice in such conditions. I know this car is all-wheel drive but it's tricky to get into corners when going too fast or when braking too early. In such weather like this, resorting to such tactics won't do any good and it takes some practice to getting used to some outlandish weather forecasts while driving on your favorite track. Having my hand on such freezing conditions, I find it very tricky to handle on such freezing conditions but I'm starting to get a hang of it and I shall show you how I deal with this condition. However, the snowstorm's becoming harsh but still, challenge accepted.

Under extreme freezing conditions, I managed to did it in 2:18.220. Barely made it but I need to refine if I need to master such driving conditions.

RS200

As Florida's weather starting to go back in such conditions, looks like it won't be too long before Daytona's back to normal racing conditions so the next season of America's favorite stock car racing series begins but it's kind of fun to drive around Daytona on ice. With over a million ways to race, Project CARS 2 is about racing your own way under any weather forecast you want to tackle.

Forza Motorsport 7: R35 GT-R - then and now

A decade has passed since Nissan unveiled the R35 GT-R at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show and as supercars get more and more advanced, rest assured that despite its near-outdated looks, the R35 GT-R continues to break its limits until the day comes where it will lay to rest and undergo metamorphosis to become more powerful than it ever was. While we wait for that right time to come for Godzilla, it's fair to say that the R35 GT-R remains a classic for car enthusiasts worldwide because such looks and performance makes it a timeless classic.

Here in Forza Motorsport 7, I've been joined by two versions of the R35 GT-R, the 2012MY one and the latest 2017MY one. They're all slightly different but they're still the GT-R we all know and love.

Starting with the 2012 model, this is how I fell in love with the GT-R because of its incredible results compared against the world's best supercars. In its glorious days, it can mince even the most expensive supercars on the planet, probably thanks to its clever launch control feature. On the track, it can easily upset even the mighty Veyron as well. Now, seems that the luck has changed for the GT-R and as cars get more progressive than ever, looks like the GT-R's days are numbered as demonstrated by such humiliating clips where cars like the Aventador and the 911 Turbo S easily beaten the GT-R like a book.

Even the 2017 model couldn't help despite the added power. Sure it can beat the Honda NSX by a long straight but in the end, a Tesla Model S can beat it easily. Worse, it's even heavier than the previous GT-R I fell in love with and with the traction control off, it really doesn't feel like it's off, meaning dreary understeer is very likely for a 4WD JDM monster. Still, despite its faults, I still love the GT-R no matter what that is. This car has been the national treasure for Japan since sushi, anime, origami, even those dreary hybrids.

Speedo boys have been fallen in love with the R35 GT-R since its return a decade ago and as times change, even their favorite cars when they migrated to more powerful machines the Europeans offered, rest assured that in one piece of their memory, they can still remember the good old Godzilla within them because once driven, forever smitten, even when they switched cars.

So, what can I say? How about putting these two versions for a quick lap round the Top Gear Test Track, huh? Sure, I got all of the ingredients here and all it needs now to see which one is the best.

Roll the tape!

And now the results...

1:20.708 - 2017MY GT-R
1:20.808 - 2012MY GT-R

Well, that was kind of anticlimactic. Despite the added power and the improved performance, the 2017MY GT-R performed almost as similar to the pre-facelifted model it replaces. Judging by this result, there's no denying that it behaves pretty much like it was out a decade ago even though they've improved it everything they've got!

The R35 Nissan GT-R has been on the roads for a decade now and with yearly upgrades ever done to keep Japan's premiere sports coupe more enjoyable for many years to come, it still feels pretty much like the one we fall in love with and even though more and more powerful machines coming out to hunt its bumpers to the last drop, the GT-R is always coming back for more fights and it will keep on fighting even if it loses. That's determination to you.

As the car prepares its imminent metamorphoses, what are your wishes for its potential successor? Be more better than it was before? I believe it is and here's hoping we can look forward for its replacement Nissan's working on. Until then, keep driving the R35 GT-R 'till the very end!

From the people behind the hot versions of the Golf and Polo, here comes the smallest addition to the GTi family.

2018 Volkswagen up! GTi

2018 Volkswagen up! GTi interior

This is the new Volkswagen up! GTi and starting at just 16,975 Euros (1.02 million PHP), it's surprisingly the most affordable hot hatch you can buy in case you don't have enough funds to buy the Golf GTi or the Polo GTi. What that is is a GTi for everyone who want to taste hot hatch heaven and hell in such a reasonable budget.

So, what do you get in a car as reasonably priced as a family car? Well, for starters, you'd get a choice of three or five doors, some basic GTi identity implanted on the up!'s compact looks as well as the interior styled to look like those American Eagle polo shirts you bought at the mall, and the powertrain that is classic hot hatch mantra.

The GTi version is powered by a very small 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder engine that is as smaller as a box of a toy robot big enough to your toddler to play with. It produces about 115PS of power and 200Nm of torque and it is mated exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which is great news for speedo boys. Of course, it may not be as powerful as its GTi brothers or even its chief opponent, the Corsa OPC/VXR, but lack of power aside, the up! GTi is surprisingly accessible in the dynamics stakes, meaning that such handling will be popular among first timers.

It does 0-100kph in less than nine seconds and it will keep going up to 196kph. I know this is very irrelevant for a hot hatchback like this because speed is not measured when it comes to discover what is a hot hatch and the only way to measure how a hot hatch works is its dynamics.

Like it said, the up! GTi is surprisingly accessible in the dynamics stakes, meaning that such handling will be popular among first timers. Thanks to the dynamics heavily inspired from its big brothers, the VW up! GTi really handles like its big brothers but in a more convincing way that will leave drivers happy on the road and on the track. With all that spark in the up! GTi's life, there are some drawbacks to consider and being a hot hatch, it can a lot harsher to drive on normal traffic conditions and being front-wheel drive, there is a tendency to understeer, which is bad for people with arthritis and muscular pains.

Behind the drawbacks, the up! GTi really is fun and just by looking at the 16,975 Euro compact, you have the tendency to say that you are feeling jealous because you would definitely want to drive this car someday and I couldn't agree more. For a price like this, this up! GTi will make people scream "shut up and take my money" to the dealership to try one and that's the magic of making a hot hatch that draws inspiration from the original Golf GTi. There's nothing exciting or harsh about it but it is great for rookies who want to experience the GTi magic first hand.

The hybrid car - where did we get from there?

20 years have passed since Toyota introduced the world's first hybrid electric vehicle known as the Prius in December 1997 and since the advent of the Prius, Japan is now forever known as the country that introduced this kind of vehicle so thank you for that and such hybrid technology from the Prius have been used by almost all car manufacturers experimenting their electrification promises in an all-out effort to reduce CO2 emissions.

So, as the automotive industry embraces electrification, time for some filler about how hybrids changed from Prius to P1, from boring to exciting, and how hybrids forever rule the automotive landscape with a green thumb rather than an iron fist.

The Genesis - It was late December 1997 when Toyota Motor Corporation introduced the world the Prius, the first-ever hybrid electric car on the road. Known as the more practical solution to automobile-produced pollution, a hybrid car like the Prius combines two or more power sources and the first Prius combines a 1 .5L 4-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor that generates more torque than the engine itself.

On normal driving, power from the gas engine is split through a special CVT gearbox. Some runs to the wheels and some are used to recharge the batteries. The generator usually runs the electric motor for additional power to the wheels while the batteries supplement the generator during hard acceleration. As it decelerates or brakes, the electric motor functions as a generator to recharge the batteries.

Thanks to the Prius, more and more vehicles have adopted the same hybrid powerplant as the Prius, even minivans like the Estima and SUVs like the Harrier and because of that, most car companies wanted to copy Toyota's hybrid powerplant to their new cars for the pursuit of reducing emissions to their vehicles. To date, 11 million Toyota hybrids, including Lexus hybrids, have been sold globally.

The Electric Car - A year before the advent of the Toyota Prius, the United States of America is the first to introduce the world to an electric car known as the EV1 by General Motors. Available only for lease from 1996 to 1999, the first EV1 is powered by a three-phase AC induction motor and a 16.5-kWh Delphi lead-acid battery. Then, three years later, the last EV1 is powered by a 18.7-kWh Panasonic lead-acid batteries and later upgraded with 26.4-kWh nickel-metal-hydride batteries. It was the first car to be sold under the General Motors emblem, sparking confusion among consumers, and in 2003, General Motors ended leases of their two-seater EV, sparking a chain of events that lead to the documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car. However, the electric car has been revived thanks to companies like Tesla and Nissan and since then, The Revenge of the Electric Car has come to fruition as almost all car companies are joining the electric car bandwagon.

2018 Nissan Leaf
The PHEV - Car companies wanted to combine the best of both worlds by combining the capabilities of a hybrid car and an electric car and the result is the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or PHEV. A PHEV allows owners to recharge the batteries using the car itself or at home via a charger like they do with an electric car. Simple as that. Toyota became the first to introduce the plug-in hybrid to the world with the Prius PHV in 2012.

The key difference is that the battery of a PHEV is smaller than a pure electric car and powers the wheels at slow speeds or for a limited range. With the battery range taken care of, the hybrid powertrain allows the car to keep going.

2017 Toyota Prius PHV
The Cheating EV - The advent of the Chevrolet Volt introduced a new kind of eco-car known as an extended-range electric vehicle. Much to the disdain of electric car purists, cars like the Volt feature a plug-in battery pack and electric motor as well as an internal combustion engine. It's different from a PHEV as the electric motor always drives the wheels, with the internal combustion engine serving as a generator to recharge the battery when it is depleted. The ideal thing about cars like Volt is that you can do two things; refuel with petrol and recharge the batteries, the best of both worlds.

It's not just the Volt that has this kind of clever powertrain but also BMW with their i3 when the top-spec comes with a small petrol engine that serves as a backup when the battery runs dry.

2016 Chevrolet Volt
Fuel Cell - Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles are by far the most unsung of the eco cars because there's little to be known about this powerplant. Unlike most hybrid powerplants, it uses hydrogen to produce electricity which then powers the wheels of the vehicle, and because hydrogen is the most abundant element in the world (because there's no gas lighter than that), the only tailpipe emission is water. And, no recharging is needed because it will keep generating power as long as it is fed with hydrogen.

Many car companies are studying the feasibility of hydrogen-powered cars but Toyota perfected it with the MIRAI in 2014.

2015 Toyota MIRAI
How to make hybrids more engaging - Some drivers criticized the hybrids for not being as engaging as other cars and a handful of car companies responded their words by doing the impossible for hybrids; either putting powerful engines, engaging gearboxes that work better than the hybrid-derived CVT, or both.

For example, Honda tried to make a hybrid car more engaging when it launched the first Insight in the year 2000. They were the first to put a manual gearbox in the hybrid and then in 2010, they've done it again with the CR-Z. Later, Honda experimented with adding double-clutch gearboxes on hybrids like the Fit, the Grace, and the Vezel, and the result is better fuel economy and more engaging driving feel unless we bother about reports on Honda recalling such cars a couple of years ago. Still, it's pretty much impressive that the Koreans copied Honda's hybrid DCT sorcery to hybrid cars like the Hyundai iONIQ and Kia Niro.

Nissan, on the other hand, put a seven-speed AT on hybrid models like the Fuga and the Skyline and the result is a hybrid that balances performance and fuel efficiency at the same pace.

As for engines, car companies like BMW, Porsche, and Volvo dumped turbocharged engines on their hybrids to give them more oomph than your basic hybrids.

Honda CR-Z

Experimenting with different fuel sources - Few companies trying to go beyond gasoline by experimenting with different fuel sources for their hybrids. For instance, Hyundai and Kia made a hybrid that runs on liquefied petroleum and it was based on the Avante HD and the Forte. Sadly, they never really made the cut. Then, Peugeot experimented with making a diesel hybrid on a 3008 crossover and the 508 RXH as well as Land Rover with their Range Rover Hybrid. Again, they never really made the cut.

Hybrids in motorsports - Even motorsports are catching up with the trend of hybrids, more importantly at the World Endurance Championship and Formula 1. Hybrids played a pivotal role in LMP1s since the Audi R18 corked numerous wins before Porsche returns with the 919, the car that became the three-time Le Mans champion before it bids farewell to this sport for good. In Formula 1, they've even gone nuts with the kinetic energy recovery system, which recovers the car's energy during braking.

The rise of eco sportscars - The advent of the McLaren P1, Porsche 918, and the Ferrari LaFerrari sparked a new revolution in the eco-car race, using hybrid technology to unleash bare naked speed. It's not just them, but also Honda with their revived NSX with their Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain, V6 turbo engine in the middle, and a double-clutch gearbox, capable of winning the hearts of car enthusiasts many. As for electric sportscars, well, thanks to the rise of the Tesla Roadster, it's rare to see an electric sportscar coming out on the road like the Mercedes-AMG SLS Electric Drive or even the Rimac Concept_One, the one that Richard Hammond crashed it on The Grand Tour. With cars like these, electrification just got a whole lot sexier.

McLaren P1

And there we have it. 20 years of hybrids from Prius to P1, from boring to exciting, it's fair to say that because the whole automotive landscape is trying to adapt the road to electrification following that nasty scandal that plagued Volkswagen and other car companies a few years back, we have no choice but to embrace it, even if it's ugly. Good hybrids, bad hybrids, doesn't matter how it ends up as long as car companies put their effort to make the road to electrification beneficial to everyone but we can all learn something from them.

At least, no matter how boring or exciting a hybrid can be, it's proof that we all live in the future now whether we like it or not. The more you know.

Leopaul's Heaven and Hell: Can't afford to put fizzy drinks in our glasses anymore...

In case you really missed it, the Philippine government has implemented the first phase of the controversial tax reform, which is different that the other controversial one in America that was favored by the fat man who controls the human race, and while the sharp rise of consumer prices are something to worry about, what's even worrying to me is that one clause in this tax reform is the taxation of sugar sweetened beverages. In other words, your fizzy drinks that you commonly bought from your neighborhood sari-sari store is not safe from that menace. So, why does this part grinds my gears?

Coke Emoticon Bottles

Ever since everybody in the world warned us not to drink too much beer because of the devastating events apart from turning every husband into a maniac who's going to kill his family without knowing, we find a better alternative way to stave off from a bottle of beer because of the crazy effects our body and mind are getting and that's where the softdrink come from. Sure, they can be as fizzy as a beer but unlike alcohol, it doesn't leave our mouths smell like beer and won't end up like family beaters but on the downside, all that sugary content will end up going wild until at the end of the day, we all end up with slight hangovers.

Like you and I, we love having a bottle of softdrinks in our refrigerator because the drinks section can be so bland without it. Softdrinks change the world according to us. They are our quenchers in lunchtime and tea (dinner), our means of entertaining our friends, our relaxation, whatever our reason, we all bound by our decision to stock ourselves with softdrinks at home because they're much safer to drink than alcoholic beer.

At the dawn of the new year, looks like the softdrink days are now numbered because of the dreaded tax against sugar sweetened beverages. According to the Department of Finance's Comprehensive Tax Reform Program, they will tax six pesos per liter of drinks containing caloric or non-caloric sweetener and 12 pesos per liter on drinks containing high fructose corn syrup. Sweetened juice drinks like Zest-O or Hi-C, sweetened tea like Nestea, flavored water, energy drinks, sports drinks, non-milk powdered drinks, cereal and grain beverages, and other non-alcoholic beverages that contain added sugar. 3-in-1 coffee, milk, and 100% natural juice are exempted from the rule.

As you may wondering, do diet and zero sugar softdrinks do count on this beverage tax? The answer is a major yes because those so-called diet and zero sugar softdrinks like the ones we drink sometimes have been sweetened by non-caloric sweeteners, thus making them victims of this rule. Looks like no one's safe on this rule, unless you want to drink yourself a glass of water, which is bland but obvious.

It's not just the Philippines that falls victim to the tax against sugary beverages, in fact, some parts of the world did. From where I'm standing, they've imposed a sweetened beverage tax which most of the sugary drinks are subject to a tax of $1.75 per ounce. Which means, a 12-pack of canned soda like the ones they sold at your nearest Safeway will now cost $2.52 while a box of 10 juice-drink pouches will cost $1.75, 6-pack of sport drink $2.10, a 16oz fountain drink 28 cents, and 23oz can of sweetened tea 40 cents. Thank you Seattle for such dreaded tax on our favorite beverages.

Taxing sugary drinks is nothing new in this world. In fact, the main reason why they want to slap some tax on such drinks because of health and safety reasons and while some oppose because it's anti-poor, some health-conscious people lauded it because such drinks are linked not just obesity but also type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and dental decay. Come on, we only drink them moderately like beer, you know, and still drive our car back home without getting caught by authorities and doing the breathalyzer thing.

Now that softdrinks are getting more costly than it were back in the good old days, seems like we can't afford to put fizzy drinks in our glasses anymore. What happens next? Put sofdrinks in the sin tax bill? That's crazy and if that to happen, we couldn't afford to drink them anymore and that makes us dull.

Softdrinks are a way to chill ourselves on a hot day, to entertain our guests, and relax, but by making them more expensive, our wallets are running dry and thanks to such tax reforms that favor only the rich people, I can't say what's what but it really made us grind our gears and ending up with alternatives such as 100% natural juice, which is rare to find in today's markets, plain milk, and a glass of water. Can't believe we start the year with a much blander lifestyle because of high consumer prices thanks to tax reforms that are deemed regressive and unless we get ourselves a job, there's no way we can live in such times like these. Here's hoping that we can all learn something from such a purpose.

See you next time and if you got some cash, better stock up on some drinks while you can.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: North Korea signals Olympic truce

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for urgent talks with South Korea to make next month's Winter Olympics a success even with repeated threats to use nuclear force against the United States.

In an annual New Year's Day speech, Kim said that "we sincerely hope the games will be successful." He said both Koreas should seek to resolve problems among themselves rather than seek help from outside the region.

"It's about time that the North and South sit down and seriously discuss how to improve inter-Korean relations by ourselves and dramatically open up," Kim said on Monday. Referring to the Olympics, he said later "We're willing to take necessary steps including sending our delegation, and for this, the authorities from the North and South could urgently meet."

President Moon Jae-in welcomes Kim's comments and repeated that South Korea is ready for talks without conditions, a spokesperson said.

In his 2018 message released by his presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae, President Moon is putting top priority in state affairs to improve the quality of people's lives while striving to prompt tangible changes to everyday life.

The President said the country has also made progress in the economy, noting the country's trade volume exceeded 1 trillion dollars for a second consecutive year with its annual economic growth expected to top 3%. He said these accomplishments are all the more precious because they were made in the face of political conflict and security challenges despite ongoing threats from North Korea.
