Volkswagen ID.5

Following the success of the first-ever ID.3 hatchback and the World Car of the Year award-winning ID.4 crossover, a coupe crossover version of the said VW electrics has arrived and it's ready to snatch some profits out of the Tesla Model Y. Welcome to the first-ever ID.5.

2022 Volkswagen ID.5 GTX
2022 Volkswagen ID.5 GTX

With prices starting at 46,515 Euros plus additional costs, the ID.5 is basically a coupe crossover version of its relatives.

At first glance, it looks identical to the ID.4 crossover as well as its minimalist interior that is not friendly for speedo boys behind the wheel and seating for up to five people as usual, but because being the coupe crossover version of the ID.4, the ID.5 features a sloping roofline which is a very German thing to do since the first-generation BMW X6.

When it comes to boot space, the ID.5 is slightly more compared to the ID.4 with the rear seats present but with the rear seats folded down, that's 14L less than the ID.4. Fair enough for a coupe crossover with a sloping roofline but it's still more than enough to tackle everyday needs.

In its rear-wheel-drive configuration, which feels like an old Porsche 911 when you handle it precisely like a pro, making it a mild coupe crossover to drive on a daily basis, the Pro Performance variant's 204ps 77kWh battery pack allows the ID.5 to sprint from 0-100kph in 8.4 seconds and has a top speed of 160kph, which is 20kph slower than Japanese cars. Range? It's good for 516km based on WLTP standards and when plugged into a public charging outlet, it will reach 80% capacity in almost half an hour.

The high-performance GTX variant adds another electric motor to the front axles, making it a four-wheel-drive electric crossover that produces 299PS of power and 310Nm of torque, capable of hitting a 0-100kph time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 180kph, which makes it feel like a Japanese car as expected. The driving range is good for 491km and when plugged into a public charging outlet, it will reach 80% capacity in less than 40 minutes, which is longer than the normal rear-wheel-drive ID.5 but with the GTX, it's a capable crossover than can tackle through all kinds of conditions despite retaining its mild driving feel from its normal equivalent.

The ID.5 and the ID.5 GTX are packed with the most advanced safety features Volkswagen ever thought of ranging from Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, multi-collision brake and Lane Assist, Side Assist lane change system, Park Assist, Park Distance Control, and so on.

With the addition of the coupe crossover derivative to Volkswagen's ID line of electric vehicles, looks like the road to electrification is still going on strong, like it or not. Although not as good as the Tesla Model Y, its pricing is worth owning it, and looks like the Germans are on the roll with this one.

Nissan Ariya

This is by no means one of the most important milestones for Nissan since the Leaf. It's called the Ariya and this electric crossover signaled the new era for Nissan in the midst of the new normal.

2022 Nissan Ariya

2022 Nissan Ariya

The Nissan Ariya is an all-electric crossover that Nissan called one of the most important milestones since the Leaf and whatever the reason, it's a proper game-changer that caters to the world with its revolutionary electric powertrain and dynamics that set standards for electric vehicles in this time of the new normal.

Beginning with the styling, the Ariya heavily draws inspiration from the concept car as seen at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show thanks to such positive feedback from the motoring public. Although the sizing can be somewhat mistaken for the defunct Murano, it has a shorter overall length than the X-Trail in reality. No complaints here.

2022 Nissan Ariya

The same here goes for the interior. the Ariya prefers the minimalist route like most modern vehicles have because minimalism is part of the new normal of the motoring world. Despite its minimalism, the Ariya is still user-friendly for all because of a working knob for the volume, a climate control touch panel on the dashboard, and a super long split-screen positioned on the driver's side with one for the instrumentals and the other for touch screen purposes, and what's surprising is the hidden touch panels near the armrests that appeared when it's on and they're made to adjust your driving pleasure. One thing you might need to watch for is its tech, especially the dreaded Amazon Alexa feature installed on the Ariya. Once the Alexa moment kicks in, the disturbance begins as such.

Aside from that, the Ariya boasts best-in-class interior space unique for electric vehicles, meaning this five-seater is fit for all walks of life.

2022 Nissan Ariya

The base front-wheel-drive B6 variant with the 66kWh battery pack, priced at 5,390,000 Japanese Yen, produces 218PS of power, 300Nm of torque, and it's good for 450km of driving range based on WLTC mode standards. However, for those who are lucky enough to reserve the ultra-expensive B9 limited with a 91kWh battery pack and the revolutionary e-4ORCE 4WD system, it has 394PS of power output, 600Nm of torque, and 580km of driving range based on WLTC Mode standards. Front-wheel-drive B9 variants are good for 610km. Lucky them.

The e-4ORCE 4WD system is a new type of electric 4WD system that draws inspiration from the legendary ATTESA E-TS of the Nissan GT-R and the All-Mode 4x4 used on Nissan SUVs. By taking care of its power output and braking performance, the e-4ORCE system makes the Ariya capable of handling all kinds of road conditions, especially tarmac, gravel, or snow. Not perfect as such but it's rather excellent indeed for an all-around electric crossover. This signature electric 4WD system deserves some respect, mind you.

With safety as part of the new normal, the first-ever Nissan Ariya features the most advanced driving aids as part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility banner. It features an improved ProPILOT with Navi-link that gives this crossover autonomous driving capability that terrifies speedo boys many. There's also ProPILOT Park for hands-free parking, e-Pedal for one-pedal operation, Intelligent Around View Monitor, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking, and Rear Automatic Emergency Braking Technology, among many others.

The arrival of the Ariya signaled the true beginning of the next chapter of Nissan history. Like it or not, this electric crossover not only sets standards, it is the gold standard for electric vehicles, and looks like this Nissan deserves some kudos for its game-changing characteristics that made the Ariya the electric crossover built for the challenges of the new normal. This is the future we live in.

Renault Megane V E-Tech

The fifth-generation Renault Megane is now a fully-electric hatchback that can be either a revolution or a revolting feat, depending on how you see it. Either way, that's how the system works, as a certain someone said. Anyway, it's time to meet your new Megane-san.

2022 Renault Megane E-TECH

2022 Renault Megane E-TECH
2022 Renault Megane E-TECH

Starting at 35,200 Euros plus additional costs, the fifth-generation Renault Megane is a drastic change that shares nothing in common with its predecessors because starting now, the Megane is a BEV that signals the new age for Renault in this time of the new normal.

Beginning with the styling, the all-new Megane draws inspiration from the eVision Concept but in reality, it's hard to describe whether it is a crossover or a hatchback just like the Hyundai IONIQ5 and the Kia EV6, the Megane E-TECH's main targets. Apart from that, the Megane E-TECH is the first Renault to don the new logo because it's the new decade and the new logo rush is the new normal. Either way, that's how the design works, but still, it's worth charming for a French electric car of such size.

2022 Renault Megane E-TECH
2022 Renault Megane E-TECH interior

2022 Renault Megane E-TECH
2022 Renault Megane E-TECH interior

The new interior can be as hospitable as, well, Meganee-san of course, probably because of its roomier creature comforts and boot space compared to the previous model, not to mention the extensive use of recycled materials for guilt-free purposes like most EVs had, but what's on the driver's side is worth a controversy because of its massive touch screen on the dashboard similar to Teslas, which controls much about everything on this car ranging from the audio, the sat-nav, the smartphone connectivity, and so on. This stuff scares speedo boys straight to their knees but as always, that's how the system works.

2022 Renault Megane E-TECH

Now let's get to know more about its electric powertrain, the trump card of the new Megane E-TECH. It features a brand new EESM and it weighs less than the one used on the ZOE, and it features two power configurations with the latter producing 160kw of power and 300Nm of torque, capable of 0-100kph time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 160kph, 20kph slower than everyday Japanese vehicles. As for range, the range-topper is good for 450km based on WLTP standards and its charging time takes 42 minutes to reach 80% when plugged into a public charging station. That's how the electric powertrain works and apart from that, the Megane E-TECH features regenerative braking on demand with four interchangeable brake levels.

In terms of driving feel, the Megane E-TECH feels bulky to drive unlike past Megane models because it weighs over two tons due to its electric powertrain, but it feels stable and civilized. In the end, that's how the Megane works.

The Renault Megane E-TECH, much to the shock of speedo boys behind the wheel, features the most advanced driving aids offered in its class such as Active Driver Assist, Smart Speed Limiter, LDW, BSW, Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, Rear AEB, OSE, and many others. That's how safety features work.

Is the new Renault Megane E-TECH a revolution or a revolting feat? With its crossover styling, futuristic interior, game-changing electric powertrain, and the most advanced safety features offered, you can't really say but in the end...that's how the new Megane E-TECH works.

Say hello to your new Megane-san, Megane-san.

Genesis Electrified GV70

Launched at the end of 2020, the GV70 is the second SUV in the Genesis lineup and despite its weirdness that puts speedo boys out cold, is surprisingly an enjoyable luxury crossover to drive on a daily basis. With the arrival of the Electrified variant, the GV70 is joining the electrification bandwagon following the success of the Electrified G80 sedan and the all-original EV, the GV60.

2023 Genesis Electrified GV70
2023 Genesis Electrified GV70

Priced at 78,090,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the Electrified GV70, as the name implies, is the electric version of the GV70 crossover that was launched at the end of 2020. Its potential rivals are the BMW iX3 and the Audi e-tron as expected.

For an average car enthusiast, it looks nearly identical to the normal GV70. The sharp front view, the awkward side profile and the rear view, the buttonless dashboard inside, and seating for five people. For the Electrified GV70, however, the faux grille in the front with the hidden compartment where you will plug your charger in is what differentiates it from the normal GV70.

Offered exclusively in 4WD configuration, the Electrified GV70's electric powertrain features two electric motors each generating 160kw of power and 350Nm of torque. Combined and when engaged in Boost Mode, it generates a total power output of 360kw of power and 700Nm of torque, making it capable of hitting 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds, as quick as a German saloon. As for the range, it's good for 400km, enough to cover a trip from Seoul to Busan with some leftovers to tackle through Busan landmarks.

As for charging times, the Electrified GV70's 350kw rapid charging capability enables its Li-ion batteries to charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes when plugged into a public charging station, although charging times may vary depending on location.

Despite bearing the bulk of its electric powertrain, the Electrified GV70 is surprisingly good to drive because of its highly sophisticated suspension setup underneath, not to mention the application of the Pre-view ECS for an optimized driving experience.

It even comes with a signature e-Terrain Mode which makes this crossover stable to drive in various driving conditions, say tarmac, gravel, or snow. Although I cannot guarantee if this will work with your picnic with Hannibal.

The arrival of the Electrified GV70 is another clear sign that Genesis's electrification plot is building up.

Available Colors: Uyuni White, Seville Silver, Carbon Metal, Vik Black, Cardiff Green, Royal Blue, Mauna Red, Barossa Burgundy, Matterhorn White, Melbourne Grey, Brunswick Green, and Barossa Burgundy (Matte).

Ssangyong Korando E-Motion

It's the dawn of the new era for Ssangyong Motor under the new management of a certain Korean firm promising to transition the company in the age of electrification. With such rebirth comes the arrival of the first electric vehicle from Ssangyong; the Korando E-Motion. Let's find out what's it all about Ssangyong's first electric crossover that sparks the beginning of the new age of South Korea's SUV specialists.

2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion
2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion

2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion
2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion

The first-ever Ssangyong Korando E-Motion, priced at 38.8 Million Korean Won plus additional costs, showcased that for the revived Ssangyong under new ownership by a start-up Edison Motors, it's better late than never to join the electrification arms race, although none of the established Korean carmakers created electrified crossovers based on theirs, which makes the Korando E-Motion pretty much unrivaled at its own right.

2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion
2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion interior

While it looks nearly identical to the normal third-generation Korando crossover, the E-Motion features a grille-less front view for a sensible approach compared to electric cars sporting gargantuan faux grilles that spoil their credentials. It even comes with secret touch panels lurking through the side doors for gimmick purposes. Inside, it features blue accents to differentiate it from the normal Korando. Thanks to its clever handling with the electric powertrain, the E-Motion is still as roomy as the normal Korando and the boot space is nearly identical to the normal one as well, making it capable of all situations, be it for work or for leisure.

2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion
2022 Ssangyong Korando E-Motion

The Korando E-Motion's electric powertrain features a 61.5kWh Li-ion battery pack and an electric motor at the front generating 190PS of power and 360Nm of torque, making this FF-only crossover good for 307km in one full charge. As for charging times, it will take about 11 hours to charge at home or 80% in 33 minutes while charging at a 100kw charging station.

Because being front-wheel-drive only without some C3 Aircross-style trickery that gets you through dirty situations, the Korando E-Motion feels like it only works on the tarmac. Speaking of tarmac, the front MacPherson struts and rear multilink suspension made the Korando E-Motion behave like a European crossover rather than a Korean crossover, which is a good thing. Not exciting but it feels good to drive on a normal basis.

Boasting high-quality levels of safety, the Korando E-Motion features highly-advanced driving aids offered on a Ssangyong, including the highly intriguing but game-changing Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, giving this electric crossover a semi-autonomous approach that will make drivers noticed while driving on a freeway. It's a shocker but it's worth checking out.

Ssangyong Motor is now under new ownership with big electrified ambitions and this Korando E-Motion is the start of a new era. Although it lacks the attention of the established ones, it has the potential to impress Gen Z customers with its value for money. This is a budget-conscious electric crossover that meets the challenges of the new normal and it truly is a start for the new Ssangyong Motor. The joys of being Korean-owned.

Cupra Born

After the Formentor crossover, the Cupra brand unleashed another beast of their own and it's an electric hatchback known as the Born. So, what's it all about the Cupra Born? Let's investigate.

Priced at 37,400 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Cupra Born is basically a Volkswagen ID.3 that consumed too much Sangria Rosa and then turned into its Spanish equivalent. Unlike the ID.3 it was based on, the Born's styling is surprisingly wild and tangy for an electric hatchback. There is a well-known tidbit that it was heavily inspired from the Seat el-Born Concept but because Cupra is now a brand and part of the Volkswagen Group, the el-Born Concept from Seat became known today as the Cupra Born, much like when the Volvo 40.2 Concept turned into a Polestar 2 without the Volvo connection.

While the exterior is cyberpunk-esque for a hatchback, the interior is like a darker version of the ID.3, although the minimalist interior only appeals to Gen Z customers because of its touch-screen setup and lack of buttons. Futuristic indeed but still, it fits up to five people and the boot space is from 385L to 1267L, which is similar to the Volkswagen ID.3 of course.

At launch, the Born is equipped with a 58kWh battery pack that produces 204PS of power, 310Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 7.3 seconds, and 160kph of top speed. Slower than Japanese cars but it fits well to the high-performance car class. As for range, it's good for 424km in one full charge based on WLTP standards and it will take about 6 1/4 hours to fully charge at home or 80% in 35 minutes while charged at public. By 2022, the Born will be joined by the lesser 45 kWh variant and the more powerful 77kWh with e-Boost Pack. Engage the e-Boost button and it will produce 231PS of power. Simple.

In terms of dynamics, being a rear-wheel-drive car that weighs almost two and a half tons, the Born behaves like a hot hatch but in a mild and tangy way as expected. It has spartan driving manners just like a normal Porsche 911 as such and believe it or not, driving one is a piece of cake, thank you MEB platform and aluminum bodywork.

In terms of safety, the Born features a wide array of safety features such as Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, Travel Assist, Side and Exit Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Emergency Assist, and Pre-Crash Assist.

The Cupra Born truly is a Volkswagen ID.3 that consumed too much Sangria Rosa and with its cyberpunk-esque exterior design, minimalist interior fit for Gen Z, space, electric powertrain, and spartan driving manners, the Born is the go-to electric hatchback you want to drive.

BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe (G26) and i4

The controversially-styled, second-generation BMW 4-Series is now available in Gran Coupe form, giving Bimmers what is like when today's 3-Series looks like this. If that wasn't enough, it even spawn its electric equivalent, the i4. It's investigation time, kids.

The new 4-Series Gran Coupe, priced at 45,800 Euros plus additional costs, and its i4 equivalent, priced at 58,300 Euros, are stark reminders of what happens when today's 3-Series wear the controversial front its coupe equivalent donned from the very start.

BMW is now living in an era of big grilles speedo boys call it nonsense and this Gran Coupe is no exception. The 4-Series Gran Coupe bears the same burden as its two-door equivalent but with two extra doors added, it adds some beauty to its controversial looks, meaning it's not half bad to look at it. The same goes for the i4 because while it strives to mimic the concept car's roots, there's no hiding the fact that's basically a 4-Series Gran Coupe with an electric powertrain.

Like the two-door equivalent, the interior still works like every BMW does and it packs gadgets to toy with especially the annoying voice control that your camera-toting mate will find it too much to bear. Thanks to two additional doors, it's roomier than the two-door version and easy to get in and out from the back.

Under the hood, you have a choice of either a 2.0L petrol, a 2.0L diesel (the one to avoid since this is Europe today), and then this; the 374PS 3.0L 6-cylinder turbocharged engine from the range-topper M440i xDrive variant. All variants are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic as standard as well as the micro-hybrid nonsense as well. As for the dynamics, the new 4 Gran Coupe drives better than the old one because of its low center of gravity, improved dynamics, sport-tuned chassis, and suspension setup, and others. In its normal rear-wheel-drive guise, it still works like a real BMW most speedo boys adorned, but with xDrive on the M440i, expect punchlines that will get you hooked for more.

The i4, meanwhile, bears a similar story. The normal variants are rear-wheel-drive only but the M50 variant is all-wheel-drive and because being all-wheel-drive with an extra electric motor in it, the power output is a total 544PS of power, more than today's M4 Competition, 795Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 3.9 seconds, and a top speed of 225kph. As for range, it's good for 512km based on WLTP standards.

Even with two extra doors and with the addition of the i4, it still has the case of "bad plus good equals better for everyone", just like the entire 4-Series range.

BMW iX

The BMW iNEXT Concept has come alive as the first-ever BMW iX, an all-electric crossover that promises to be the most enjoyable electric crossover although the face deserves a lot of interrogation. Anyway, let's investigate.

The BMW iX, priced at 77,300 Euros plus additional costs, is the production version of the iNEXT Concept from 2018, fulfilling the concept's promise, unlike most concept cars with broken promises. Although BMW kept its promise of creating a production version of the iNEXT concept, the iX's design is still as controversial as BMW's designs of today since the current 4-Series Coupe.

A glimpse of its front view serves as a cautionary tale for Gen Z people because, thanks to its massive kidney grille and headlamps reminiscent of the pre-facelifted Jeep Cherokee, it's no doubt one of the weirdest cars to emerge in 2021. If you see one driving an iX, you'd better think twice before commenting on it by the looks because there's a bit more than it.

Controversial the iX's exterior is, the interior is a story-changer because the iX marks the debut of the new-generation BMW iDrive system. Running on BMW Operating System 8, the new iDrive system takes advantage of its BMW Curved Display and the rather annoying BMW Intelligent Personal Assitant with voice function as well as other noticeable features that will enrich drivers' experience. While getting salivated over the new iDrive system, the iX's minimalist interior is worth a challenge for baby boomers and millennials behind the wheel because you can't find buttons to adjust its aircon and volume as expected.

In terms of space, the iX is rather comfortable and accommodating for five people and in terms of boot space, it's surprisingly roomier than the Mercedes EQA or the EQB SUVs.

Armed with an electric all-wheel-drive system, the iX is prepped to take on all kinds of road conditions although the bulk of the weight made the iX mild to drive judging by the fact that its permanent total weight weighs over three tons.

In its top-spec form, the xDrive50's electric powertrain produces 503PS of power, which is less than today's M3 Competition, 765Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 4.6 seconds, and a top speed of 200kph, enough to eat a Toyota RAV4 PHV alive on the highway.

Keeping up with the challenges of the new normal, the iX features a host of driver assistance systems with the potential of Level 3 autonomous driving in the midterm. Armed with five cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, the iX takes advantage of its front collision warning system, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop7Go, Remote Theft Recorder, and Parking Assistant for added peace of mind, whatever the reason.

While the design is a matter of concern for the iX, despite its concept car roots, its future-proof packaging is proof that this crossover is truly fit for the challenges of the new normal. If you're all in, consider the iX right away.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

Following the addition of the EQA to its line of electric crossovers, Mercedes-Benz welcomes the EQB, the electric equivalent of the GLB compact SUV. So, what's it all about the latest compact electric SUV, and why does it matter? Let's find out.

Priced at 55,311 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Mercedes EQB is the smallest electric seven-seater SUV offered and looks like Mercedes' electric offensive is on the roll and crossovers are still king as always in the new normal.

Judging by the design, the EQB is basically a GLB-Class with the EQA's front and back copy-pasted on it so it's hard to explain why. When parked alongside its little brother, the EQA, it's hard to tell the difference between them because the front and the back, despite their different proportions, are worth fun explaining.

As always, the EQB is on the same family tree as the B-Class MPV and the GLB SUV so the interior layout is about the same as theirs as well as the added gadgetry such as the MBUX with the "Hey, Mercedes" feature that works just like the Amazon Alexa. Just like its relatives, it fits up to seven people, and here's hoping you want to hit its sweet spot because when the second-row seats are heavily occupied by child seats, you have no choice but to struggle yourself through the third-row seats. Speaking of the back, it's less spacious than its GLB equivalent but roomier than the EQA, of course.

The EQB is all-wheel-drive only, meaning this electric 7-seater crossover is prepped for whatever life throws at them, be it rainy or snowy, whether if it's on the tarmac, gravel, or snow, although it feels bulky to drive because it weighs nearly three tons.

The most powerful version produces 292PS of power, 520Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 6.2 seconds, and a top speed of 160kph, which is 20kph slower than most Japanese cars. As for the range, it's good for 422km based on WLTP standards and it will take 30 hours to fully charge it at home or 80% in 32 minutes while at a public charging station, mind you.

When equipped with the Driving Assistance Package, the EQB boasts the highest levels of vehicular safety on the road but such autonomous tech can surely diss speedo boys behind the wheel as expected but for a normal driver, it's the safest way to enjoy driving, even on the weekends.

Although it's basically a GLB with the EQA's front and rear, the first-ever EQB is the ideal family-mover for the next generation of German families. Fit to take on the challenges of the new normal, this electric seven-seater crossover is prepared for almost everything life throws at it.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

The Mercedes-EQ range welcomes the addition of the first-ever electric premium sedan that is about the size of today's S-Class. Welcome to the EQS, the S-Class of electric vehicles.

Priced at 97,806 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever EQS is by no means one of the most talked-about models of 2021, and no, it's not really a premium sedan by the looks of it. It's basically a five-door liftback that competes with the likes of the iconic Tesla Model S, which is slightly cheaper than this.

Although not as sharp as the Tesla Model S, the EQS almost stays faithful to the concept car it was based on, which is rather impressive for a luxury electric saloon of this caliber but come closer and you'll get a rather bizarre impression that the curvaceous styling reminded you of a Toyota Estima. Does its futuristic styling blow your head off? Well, you should be because while the styling is somewhat out-of-this-world, it serves as a stark reminder that we are living in the future.

The interior holds a similar story because the EQS features a massive touchscreen that occupied almost the entire dashboard. Called the MBUX Hyperscreen, this mammoth of a touchscreen poses a huge challenge for drivers who are having trouble dealing with touchscreens like the ATM ones. You might think it's just like toying around with your smartphone but with such size, it's going to be a challenge and chances are, you might get flummoxed. Even toying around with your stylus pen can't help it.

The driver's side can be somewhat intimidating because of the massive touchscreen that occupied almost the entire dashboard, not to mention the added gadgetry involved, the passenger side, especially the rear seats, aren't so bad to live with. It feels like every other car but clients at the back can still expect that "out on a limo" feeling because of the rear-seat entertainment system. Despite its intimidating touchscreen on the driver's side, the EQS is about as comfortable as any other Mercedes saloons offered. Too bad there's no long-wheelbase variant offered.

The EQS is rear-wheel-drive by default, meaning this sedan can still behave like an S-Class as expected but those who want to get the most out of the EQS can opt-in for the 4MATIC variant that adds an electric motor to the front axles, producing 524PS of power, 855Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 4.3 seconds, and a 210kph top speed, not to mention 671km of range in full charge based on WLTP standards.

As you appreciate the dynamics, there's one feature you might get noticed and it's the subscription services offered on this car, similar to the PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold you gamers know, there are several features offered via subscription such as the special rear-axle steering with a steering angle of up to ten degrees. What a way to diss speedo boys behind the wheel if that wasn't enough, there are some premium features on the EQS that require subscription service, do you know which one?

Never mind about that because with safety as part of the new normal, the EQS is prepared with the most advanced safety features offered in a car like this such as Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, ATTENTION ASSIST, DRIVE PILOT, and many others.

By surprise, there's an AMG version for the first time in a Mercedes EQ car. Called the Mercedes-AMG EQS53, it adds most of the AMG know-how to the EQS, allowing this electric saloon to show its dark side on the road and track. With the Performance mode set, you can expect a startling starting sequence when you turn it on and it gets exciting to drive on the road and track. With the DYNAMIC PLUS Pack set, the EQS53's electric powertrain produces 761PS of power, 1020Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 3.4 seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 250kph, which is quite a surprise for an all-electric AMG. As for the range, it's good for 584km in one full charge. Price? The Mercedes-AMG EQS53 starts at 152,546 Euros.

And there you have it. The Mercedes EQS may not be the prettiest luxury sedan ever made not to mention the subscription services offered to unlock its premium features but in every way, the EQS is something the world wants to try, especially its AMG version that changes everything. This is no doubt the EQS is one of the most-talked cars of 2021 and by the way it feels, the whole world's itching to drive one.

First launched in 2020, the ID.4 is Volkswagen's first electric crossover of the new era which is basically an ID.3 with added ground clearance but such reputation made this electric crossover win the World Car of the Year. It truly is the people's car of the new normal and as a reward for such a reputation, Volkswagen decided to give the ID.4 some more juice with the first-ever GTX variant.

The first-ever ID.4 GTX, priced at 50,415 Euros plus additional costs, is what observers called the electric crossover equivalent of the iconic Golf GTi but don't think that this crossover has the same dynamics as the Golf GTi because truth be told, it isn't and it's a bit more than that.

At first glance, it looks and feels just like the ID.4 but the GTX adds sportiness to its exterior design as well as gives a darker interior theme that suits its personality. It has a fitting expression of a tech guy in a tracksuit jogging in the morning, which fits the theme of the GTX's "sporty yet sustainable" motto. Although not meant to be a standout from the crowd, it sure has some bragging rights for this electric crossover.

The base ID.4 is rear-wheel-drive only but the GTX adds another electric motor to the front axles, making it a four-wheel-drive electric crossover that produces 299PS of power, 310Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 6.2 seconds, and a top speed of 180kph. Although quicker than the normal ID.4, it still behaves like a normal Japanese car on the highway. One way to diss speedo boys behind the wheel, of course.

In terms of range, the GTX, thanks to its 77kWh battery pack, is good for 479km in one full charge and it takes up to 38 minutes to reach 80% battery capacity while at a public charging station or 450 minutes at home.

In terms of dynamics, the GTX is still mild to drive just like its normal equivalent, even when you set it to Sport Mode which adds responsiveness to it as well as gives more agility even with the ESC on. Not as good as the Golf GTi but it feels very easy to drive even in the dirt, although the bulk of it adds drama to its handling so expect to carry some painkillers with you because it's going to be quite challenging handling the GTX through the sharp bends.

As such, the GTX is jam-packed with the most advanced safety features Volkswagen ever thought of ranging from Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, multi-collision brake and Lane Assist, Side Assist lane change system, Park Assist, Park Distance Control, and so on. Another way to diss speedo boys behind the wheel, of course.

Although not the ideal substitute for the Golf GTi, the first-ever GTX model from Volkswagen is all about mild and menacing dynamics for drivers of all levels. It may be bulky to drive like most electrics but it feels very easy to enjoy and looks like it could be your favorite electric car to drive on a day-to-day basis.

Chevrolet Bolt EV (Minor Change) and Bolt EUV

First launched in 2016, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is a full-fledged zero-emission electric car that envisions General Motors' commitment to reducing carbon emissions for many generations to come. Fast forward to the year 2021 and the Bolt EV received a minor change as well as the addition of the first-ever Bolt EUV, its crossover cousin.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

The Bolt EV, Chevrolet's first and only fully-electric city car that feels almost irrelevant in today's America, received its big minor change for the 2022 model year, and judging by the looks of it, the new Bolt EV is now sharper looking than the pre-facelifted one, although the thinned headlamps gave us some Jeep Cherokee vibes. The first-ever Bolt EUV, meanwhile, looks almost the same as the facelifted Bolt EV but it's slightly bigger and it has a roof rack for a few reasons. Despite their size differences, they're still relatively small and easier to live with.

The interior has been heavily revised in the latest version as well. On the dashboard, the touch screen spawned buttons on the left for the volume and radio stations while the climate control's whole again. On the downside, the gear lever from the pre-facelift is gone and replaced by switches. Who cares about it? It's an electric car, after all.

Although it is as comfy and spacious as the previous version, the Bolt EUV is slightly roomier in the back while the boot space is almost as good as its little brother. Either way, they're both great for all walks of life. All business, all pleasure. This is what they're made for.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

Although new, the Bolt EV's electric powertrain with the 66kWh battery pack still produces 200hp of power and 360Nm of torque, capable of going from 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and an EPA-estimated range of 259 miles in one full charge. The Bolt EUV still packs the same electric powertrain as its little brother but because it's slightly heavier than the Bolt EV, it's 0.5 seconds slower and 12 miles less in distance. At this rate, it will take over four and a half times to charge these little tykes while going on a road trip from Seattle to Los Angeles.

Speaking of charging them, they're both come with an 11.5kW Level 2 Charging Capability and standard DC fast charging capability. At home, it will take about eight hours to fully charge the batteries like what civilized human beings need. At the nearest public charging station, meanwhile, it will take about two episodes of your favorite anime show to fully charge it. Better late than never.

Both models still feature the One-Pedal Driving feature that helps the driver transfer energy to the battery in many ways but they've added a new Sport Mode feature to make things more interesting. Cheesy but it's worth trying out even while driving through the tight spots of nearby apartment buildings in downtown Hollywood.

In terms of safety, both the Bolt EV and the Bolt EUV are equipped with Chevy Safety Assist, a wide array of safety features such as Lane Departure Warning, Rear Camera Mirror, Surround Vision, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, and Forward Collision Alert, among many other features that promise peace of mind for the occupants. Exclusive to the Bolt EUV is the shocking addition called Super Cruise, an available hands-free driver assistance technology that uses cameras and sensors for lane detection purposes and it's compatible in over 200,000 miles in the US and Canada. It's similar to Tesla's Autopilot feature in several ways but it's not foolproof so common sense is needed before giving this autonomous trick for a go.

Both the Bolt EV and the first-ever Bolt EUV are your go-to city cars fit for the new normal. Although irrelevant to today's America because Americans today prefer bigger cars, of course, it's still worth fun driving one of them, even if you're on a business trip. It's a great thing Chevrolet kept the only American city car alive in the midst of the new normal and the latest version is proof that it's still in business.

Volvo C40 Recharge

Volvo brought back the C lettering, reserved for now-extinct coupe models, for one last time but not in a way you've expected as the first-ever Volvo C40 Recharge is basically a fully-electric coupe crossover that is made to take on the Tesla Model Y. Let's find out.

The first-ever Volvo C40 Recharge, which starts at 689,900 Kr or about 7,790 Kr per month courtesy of the Care by Volvo subscription service, is a fully-electric coupe crossover that truly fits the challenges of the new normal with its electric powertrain that Volvo's now championing as well as the most advanced safety tech that is in tune with the times.

Being the last Volvo to bear the alphanumerical naming, the C40 features a coupe-like styling that is somewhat controversial for a compact crossover. Although controversial, it still incorporates the signature Volvo elements around it, which is nice.

Don't expect something special inside because the C40 features a typical Volvo interior with the dashboard carried over from the entire Volvo family tree, including the tall touch screen powered by Android with frequent software updates over the air. The coupe-like styling and the sloping roofline mean less spacious than its XC40 equivalent but it's still comfortable to live with and roomy enough for the essentials.

As a proper electric vehicle built from the ground up, the C40 uses the same electric powertrain as the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, meaning it comes with two electric motors connected in each axle, making it an all-wheel-drive crossover fit for all walks of life. Together, it produces a total of 408PS of power and 660Nm of torque, sprinting from 0-100kph in 4.7 seconds. As for the range, it's 444km in one full charge based on WLTP standards and it will take less than 40 minutes while charging at a 150kW charging station. That's more than watching an entire episode of your favorite show.

While it weighs over two and a half tons, the C40 is slightly lighter than the XC40, meaning it's slightly better to handle as well. Although not an exciting one, the C40 feels good to drive even on the open road. It's civilized, relaxing, and well-poised, and thanks to the most advanced safety feature Volvo has championed, it's surprisingly safer as well.

With such a concept, the C40 Recharge from Volvo is the electric coupe crossover that is truly capable of tackling the challenges of the new normal. Since the majority of Volvo customers prefer to have it on a temporary basis rather than a permanent one, which is also part of the new normal, it's a shame not to keep it but the main point of being a Volvo customer is, to enjoy until you are fully enjoyed. Have fun driving it until you are very happy to let it go. That's all.

Mercedes-Benz EQA

The EQA is the latest addition to the Mercedes EQ range of electric vehicles and you can think of it as the electrified equivalent of, you guessed it, the GLA judging by the theory it's similarly sized to the said baby Mercedes crossover. So, what's it all about? Let's find out.

Priced at 47,541 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Mercedes EQA is the least expensive electric crossover of the Mercedes EQ range, and although it struggles to compete against the dominant Tesla Model Y, this baby electric luxury crossover showcases its common sense to those who are taking advantage of its compact sizing, civilized dynamics, and its zero-emission promise.

Starting with the design, it's almost easy to call the EQA controversial in every way because those speedo boys who wish that the production version will be the same as the 2017 concept car are in for an utter disappointment. Contrary to the concept it draws inspiration from, the EQA is basically a five-door compact crossover bearing similar sizing as the GLA. Despite being controversial by its looks, the EQA did manage to fulfill the carmaker's vision of an EQ model in the compact segment.

Because the EQA belongs to the same bloodline as the A-Class, the interior bears resemblance to the current A-Class as well, which is questionable for an electric crossover of such size, meaning the EQA's got ample spacing for five people, good boot space, the MBUX, colorful ambient lighting, and so on. Although it's nearly as spacious as the GLA, the EQA is fit for all walks of life, whichever you would like to do with it.

The EQA is front-wheel-drive by default and the EM0021 electric motor that powers it generates 140kw of power and 375Nm of torque, capable of hitting 100kph in less than nine seconds, and it is electronically limited to 160kph. 20kph less than a typical Japanese-made car. The 4MATIC variant adds another electric motor to the rear axle, providing up to an additional 75kW of power, up to 145Nm of torque, and less than three seconds quicker than the front-wheel-drive variant but still electronically limited to 160kph. This German compact electric crossover becomes bento waiting to be eaten alive by the Japanese opposition. Ouch.

Anyway, because both the FF and 4WD variants of the EQA are powered by a 66.5kWh battery pack, it delivers a driving range of almost 430km based on WLTP standards and when charged at a public charging station, it will take half an hour to have its batteries charged from 10% to 80%. Enough to watch one episode of your favorite show while sitting inside the EQA. Nice.

Weighing over two tons, the EQA is not what you call sporty at first feel but it feels surprisingly mild on normal roads, even with the Adaptive Damping System online. In 4MATIC variants, meanwhile, it feels even milder and more accessible than its FF equivalent, giving you plenty of reasons to experience the EQA's sophisticated dynamics that is all about balancing various scenarios.

In terms of safety, the EQA features a wide array of ADAS such as Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Brake Assist. When equipped with the Driving Assistance Package, the EQA boasts the highest levels of vehicular safety on the road. Speedo boys will feel irritated by these features but who cares? They'll just have it on anyway.

Despite its controversial looks that bear almost no resemblance to the concept, the first-ever Mercedes-Benz EQA is an electric city crossover that is capable of getting the job done from the beginning to the end of the day. Whether you use it for work or for leisure, the EQA is common sense for almost everybody willing to get their hands on it.

Genesis GV60

The arrival of the first electric Genesis, the Electrified G80, is only a prologue to Genesis' road to electrification. In fact, they have just gotten started. This is the true beginning of Genesis' electrified vision; an electric crossover that promises the same dynamics as expected for a Genesis, it's called the GV60.

2022 Genesis GV60

With prices starting at 63,793,499 Korean Won plus additional costs, the first-ever GV60 electric crossover promises dynamics that you would expect for a Genesis in a compact crossover sizing and electric drivetrain that reflects on the new normal, whatever the reason.

2022 Genesis GV60

As the naming implies, the GV60 is surprisingly the smallest of the Genesis crossover range but it's wider and taller compared to the G70. As for the design, the GV60 looks more like a Kia EV6 with the face of the Citroen C3 Aircross, which is outlandish for a luxury crossover of this size. Whatever the reason, a car with no grille is better than a car with monster grilles. I'm talking to you, BMW.

2022 Genesis GV60

Speaking of the interior, the GV60 is not what you called a spacious crossover, but it's almost as spacious as the Tesla Model Y, which is its main rival. Like the Model Y, the GV60's interior adapts to the minimalist lifestyle, which spells bad news for speedo boys behind the wheel. Touch screen, am I right? Anyway, as speedo boys are lamenting about the GV60's dashboard because of the touch screen minus the buttons, it comes with a signature feature that is more of a show-off to some; the Crystal Sphere. This flashy, crystal-like object turns into a rotary gear selector if it's ready on the move. Quite an accessory, I dare say.

What's also showy on the GV60 is the addition of the digital side mirrors similar to the ones used on the Lexus ES and the Honda e. It uses cameras and OLED monitors in place of traditional side mirrors, giving them a clear and wide rear view angle.

The touch screen is the least of the speedo boys' problems because the GV60 poses the biggest problems of all; facial recognition system and fingerprint authentication system. While such features are done to prevent the bad case of Grand Theft Auto, it will become problematic if it's pre-owned. It's like the one Gamertag per account rule and if you make a mistake, there's no turning back.

As told, the GV60 is almost as spacious as a Tesla Model Y in terms of passenger comfort and boot space, and although it is small for electric crossover standards, it's still sensible enough to accommodate up to five people and carry heaps of stuff for work or for another courtesy visit to the relatives.

2022 Genesis GV60

Now, let's talk about performance. In its default rear-wheel-drive layout, the GV60's electric motor produces 168kW of power, 350Nm of torque, and a range of 451km in one full charge. Add another electric motor to the front, it will become AWD and it will churn out a total of 234kW of power and 605Nm of torque but the range is cut to 400km.

Opted for the Performance AWD powertrain, which is the equivalent to the one seen on the Kia EV6 GT, it comes with the Boost Mode located at the steering wheel. Push it on and you'll have 360kW of power and 700Nm of torque at your disposal. You can also engage the secret Drift Mode to give the GV60 the dynamics of a rear-wheel-drive car you can't get enough of. Cheesy for a crossover but it's worth trying out.

Coupled with the e-LSD, Active Road Noise Control, Regenerative Braking Control Paddle Shift, and the Preview Electronically Controlled Suspension, the GV60 is all about adapting itself through the roads of the new normal. Rear-wheel-drive alone, it's a good car to drive on the streets, but if it's AWD, it's good on almost everywhere, especially when you take it to the track with the Drift Mode on. Again, cheesy.

The Digital Side Mirror mentioned above is one of the many safety techs offered in this crossover. The GV60 features Highway Driving Assist 2 with Lane Change Assist Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear-Side Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear side Monitor, Multiple Anti-Collision Automatic Braking System, Reverse Guide Lamp, Intelligent Headlamp, Safe Exit Assist, Advanced Rear Seat Passenger Notification, and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Whether you like it or not, for tech or for performance, for ecology or for pleasure, the GV60 is all about being the best of both worlds and you should give credit to the Koreans behind this curiosity.

Audi Q4 e-tron

After Audi called shots with their e-tron electric crossover lineup, the German luxury carmaker is amping up the electric crossover craze with the unveiling of their first-ever Q4 e-tron lineup. So, what's it all about the Q4? Let's investigate.

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback

The Audi Q4 e-tron is offered in two different body styles; a normal and spacious version that starts at 41,900 Euros plus additional costs and the coupe-like Sportback variant that starts at 43,900 Euros. Whichever body style you went for, you will notice that the design looks almost similar to the concept version it draws inspiration from.

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback interior

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron interior

While admiring the exterior design's concept appeal, it's the same story for the interior as well. Although the interior design's almost similar to the concept car, it still boasts futuristic features some drivers will find it surprising and annoying at the same time, especially speedo boys behind the wheel. One such feature is the AR HUD which makes drivers feel like they're in a video game, almost.

On the passenger side, despite being smaller than the Q5-based Audi e-tron SUV, it's still a spacious crossover for up to five people, depending on which body style you're on. On the normal Q4, it has a boot space of 520 to 1,490 liters, while the Sportback variant, thanks to its sloping roofline, is slightly less spacious than the normal one. Either way, they're good enough to carry hunks of junks for all walks of life, be it business and leisure, for family use, or for personal use. Whatever floats your boat.

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback

What about performance? The Q4's electric powertrain consists of a choice of two battery packs and three drive variants. The range-topping variant has a combined power output of 299PS of power, 460Nm of torque, and a range of 482km based on WLTP standards. It does 0-100kph in 6.2 seconds and has a top speed of 180kph, which is very Japanese for a luxury German electric crossover with such aerodynamics. As for charging times, the battery will be at 80% capacity in 38 minutes when plugged in a super-fast public charging station. At home, it takes less than seven hours to fully charge this crossover, an hour less than the equivalent of a typical human sleeping period.

That said, the Q4 is rear-wheel-drive by default because of the electric motor positioned in the rear end and when you take it for a spin, it has a mild driving feel no matter how sporty your driving style is. With the quattro all-wheel-drive system made specifically for electric vehicles like this, it's still mild and tangy to drive but it's capable and stable even when the roads are wet, freezing, dirty, and sandy.

Of course, being a technologically focused crossover built for the new normal, the Q4 e-tron comes with a plethora of driver-assist systems that covers numerous traffic situations like it's in charge, like it or not.

With the arrival of the Q4 e-tron, Audi's electrification strategy is still going on strong, and expect more to come as the opportunity arises. While most speedo boys delivered an annoyed grunt over the addition of an electric crossover in the lineup, the Q4 e-tron is commonsense in the new normal, like it or not. Those who are looking for a new luxury electric crossover that is worth a trip to the office on Mondays and outings on the weekends should look no further.
