Infiniti QX50 (2nd Gen) vs. Acura RDX (3rd Gen) vs. Lincoln Nautilus

The crossover craze is an outbreak that can't be contained unlike SARS, Ebola, or MERS and the United States of America is the biggest to be hit by the pandemic where more and more people making the switch from conventional saloons to utility vehicles that are more than just vehicles, they're lifestyle checks. Specifically, people driving one would go out for garage sale hunting, trips to beauty spots, shopping, everything a crossover owner would do in their time. Infiniti brought us some of their examples in their time but one such crossover they have is a game-changer as they claimed.

2019 Infiniti QX50
2019 Infiniti QX50

This is the all-new Infiniti QX50. Priced at $36,550, it's one of the most reasonably priced luxury crossovers offered on American soil and Infiniti insists that this crossover is a game-changer because of what powers it. More than that later on but at the moment let's take a quick talk about the QX50. About over a decade ago, its predecessor called the EX was launched and it arrived on Japanese soil as the Nissan Skyline Crossover two years later. A normal one, because it runs on the same Skyline platform, is rear-wheel drive. Some say that this crossover is somewhat a spiritual successor to the Nissan Stagea but due to the policy shift Nissan faces, this new QX50 will not be a Skyline Crossover in the same way the new Q60 Coupe is not offered in Japan as the new Skyline Coupe. It's a shame really because judging by the looks of it...

2019 Infiniti QX50 interior

The new QX50 is a concept turned reality and because it draws inspiration from the QX Inspiration Concept, that design is a warning shot for carmakers trying to tone down the concept car's design for production. That means you, Subaru, but although the design looks like it was derived from the Q50 and the Q60, it looks more like the Mazda CX-5 when you squint your eyes harder. On the inside, the dashboard really works like the Q50 and the Q60 as well because of the dual screens mounted on it; one for display and the other for control. While there's nothing so special about its handcrafted dashboard, the QX50 is surprisingly comfortable for a five-seater luxury crossover that works not just as a family car but for escorting VIPs as well. On the back, its 65.1 cubic feet of cargo space means that it has plenty of room for stuff listed from your to-do list such as trips to the laundry, to the birthday party, to the baptism, family vacation, so on, so forth, and because it comes with the motion-activated liftgate, opening the back door becomes more convenient for the Joneses.

Now, let's talk more about the engine it powers it and this is what it refers to as the world's first 268-hp 2.0-liter VC-Turbo Engine. This all-new Variable Compression Turbo engine is the first-ever publicly available variable compression ratio engine that is capable of delivering an optimal compression ratio from performance to efficiency, from 8:1 to 14:1 respectively.  It's like having two engines in one and that really is a game-changer that Infiniti has done for us so well done but not yet because while the first-ever VC-Turbo engine is worth its first impression, its dynamics are worth questionable. The old model has a standard rear-wheel drive with optional AWD. This new one, because of its new platform that runs with it, is now front-wheel drive, which is a bit of an upset for drivers everything that it's starting to behave like the Acura I'm showing later on, and adding AWD just won't burn your eyebrows either.

It's no fun crossover to drive but it's worth soothing your brows all the way home and to make the journey home more interesting, Infiniti gave the new QX50 with new driver assistance technologies such as Forward Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Advanced Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, and Distance Control Assist. It all sounds good but unless the Jalopnik boys get a stab on it, it might be worth complaining.

It's fair to say that because the new QX50 is front-wheel drive at default, some are complaining that the days of being a Skyline Crossover of yesteryears are well and truly over, in fact, that is why this new QX50 is not available in Japan as of now. But there are more reasons to think of rather than why this luxury crossover is not offered in the Land of the Rising Sun and the dynamics it possess can be rather explained in this...

2019 Acura RDX
2019 Acura RDX

This is the all-new, third-generation Acura RDX. It starts at $37,300, it's slightly more expensive than the QX50, but this crossover has a lot of explanations to deal with apart from being a glorified Honda CR-V in 3-Series money.

Acuras of today are adopting to their Precision Crafted Performance mantra but it's the facelifted ones like the MDX, the TLX, and the RLX are getting those new faces and no matter where you're looking at, they look a bit more average because of their age. Since this RDX is all new, this is the first time an Acura underwent a full model change to don the Precision-inspired face and by the looks of it, this glorified Honda CR-V never looked so alive, although the rear view looks like it came from the Subaru Impreza, if you know what I mean.

2019 Acura RDX interior
2019 Acura RDX interior

Inside, the new RDX looks like it was copy-pasted from the Lexus NX because the dashboard looks pretty much like the NX as they said. Getting clueless about that NX-esque dashboard, the question of comfort is pretty much as decent as most crossovers. It's pretty nice to live with but because it has more boot space than the new QX50, you can hardly imagine where will you put it with that extra 11.8 cubic feet of space. Perhaps fill it with some jumbo-sized plushies you won at the country fair.

The new RDX is starting to drive like the very first one because the first generation had a 2.3L K23A1 Turbo I4 engine while the previous and rather disappointing second generation had a 3.5 L V6 engine. This one has a brand new 2.0L VTEC TURBO engine with 272HP of power while mated with a 10-speed automatic, which is four more than what the previous model had and before you can say "VTEC just kicked in, yo", please consider. While the new QX50 returns with 24/ 31 City/Highway MPG of fuel economy, the new RDX will return with 22/28 City/Highway MPG. That's about less than what it needs but there is more good news to the RDX because the old model featured a rather simple AWD powertrain which is somewhat average but for this one, they brought back the SH-AWD in the new model and with the SH-AWD armed, the new RDX is starting to feel like, well, you get the idea but it's starting to liven things up even in the rain. In the journey home, the AcuraWatch safety systems ranging from Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, and Road Departure Mitigation, as well as additional tech, are on standby and although puzzling for speedo boys, these techs will make the journey home more secure even when it's dark outside and it's raining hard.

So, while the QX50 is considered to be efficient thanks to its game-changing VC-Turbo engine, the new RDX's revival to form is starting to get the best out of the QX50. However, while some suggesting that they're not good-looking crossovers and others labeled it somewhat a minority, which is going to be troublesome, consider the alternative a wild card for the day.

2019 Lincoln Nautilus
2019 Lincoln Nautilus

This is the all-new Lincoln Nautilus and while the name sounds like a Pakistani beverage from the distant past, the Nautilus is a luxury crossover that has the ones I've mentioned above worth noticing because the starting price of $40,340 makes it the most expensive of the three. Sounds abysmal and then we go deeper into what is known to be a glorified Ford Edge with a Lincoln badge on it.

2019 Lincoln Nautilus interior
2019 Lincoln Nautilus interior

The old model, the MKX, is of course a glorified Ford Edge of some sorts but for the new Nautilus, Lincoln wants to elevate it to further heights and by observing the design, it's like the best of both worlds because as you can see, the exterior dons the Continental-style nose that served as the new face of the Lincoln Motor Company while the side view is reminiscent of today's Ford Edge and the rearview is a bit Porsche-ish. Overall, the Nautilus' design is pretty decent indeed. As for the interior, it's all the usual Lincoln interior that works pretty much like every new Lincoln I know and in the comfort zone, the Nautilus is surprisingly elegant to get yourselves cozy. Boot space, the Nautilus boasts 68.8 cubic feet so it may not be as spacious as the new RDX, it's got more room than the new QX50 and looks like the space issue is where the Nautilus sits at second place.

The standard 2.0L turbo engine with an 8-speed manual produces 245HP, which is the least powerful of the three and also the least fuel-efficient of the three with the EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 21 city/26 hwy/23 combined but what one thing the others don't have is that the Lincoln Nautilus can be fitted with a 2.7L V6 turbo engine producing 335HP of power and this is how the Nautilus will win a game of Top Trumps with that power output, although I'm not sure if the Nautilus is the clear winner per se but while the V6 turbo sounds irrelevant for some, the Nautilus finds itself struggling to keep up with its rivals in the dynamics department and while it is considered to be above average compared to them, there's a strong feeling that the Nautilus might be ignored by many just as many American carmakers getting slammed by Consumer Reports for being less reliable. Ouch.

So, there we are. To sum things up, the new QX50's VC-Turbo engine excels in being economical while the new RDX excels in the spacing issue and the new Nautilus, with its available V6 Turbo engine, is as American as it can get. Either way, these new crossovers are proof that the crossover outbreak is far from over. In fact, there are more on the way that will keep this pandemic spreading for many generations to come but in the meantime, feel free to enjoy what they offered just for you.

Forza Horizon 4: Senna Time

The all-new McLaren Senna, the latest Ultimate Series masterpiece, is the image car of Forza Horizon 4 and because this game is set in the United Kingdom, what better way to showcase the beauty of Great Britain than crowning the newest McLaren as its king? Tell you what, let's have a quick chat about the McLaren Senna.

Hailed as the successor to the legendary McLaren P1 in the Ultimate Series lineage, the McLaren Senna is named in honor of the legendary three-time Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna and it is the personification of McLaren's DNA at its most extreme, creating the purest connection between driver and car. The Senna is limited to 500 units and all have been already spoken for.

As the ultimate McLaren designed to challenge the impossible, the Senna  is a track-focused, road-legal hypercar that sets the new standard for McLaren. The 4.0L V8 Twin Turbo engine was sourced from the 720S but produces 800PS of power and 800Nm of torque, making it the most powerful internal combustion engine McLaren has ever built but it's not just the engine that powers it because with its outrageous weight savings as well as the lightweight carbon fiber core that forms it, it's the lightest McLaren ever made since the F1 with 1200kg of dry weight. What this means that the Senna delivers 668PS-per-tone of power-to-weight ratio. That's more than you get from the Bugatti Veyron. With that, the Senna can reach up to 124mph in less than seven seconds and a top speed of 211mph, which is less than what the Lamborghini Aventador can do but doesn't matter because the true objective of the Senna is to set blistering fast times.

Aerodynamics play a key role in the Senna and in Race mode, the Senna delivers 800kg of downforce at significantly less than 155mph and it features the most advanced braking system fitted in a McLaren road car. It's seven times longer than conventional carbon ceramic discs and because it's heavily inspired by their Formula 1 car as well as being armed with the P1 GTR-derived brake booster, the Senna has a braking distance from 124mph to nothing in just 100 meters.

Because of the Senna's demanding performance, it features bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres. These special tyres are made for dry racetracks but approved for road use so the Senna can use it on track days. Its unique patterns on the treads and unique construction delivers unmatched grip and cornering stiffness while providing shortened braking distance, better longitudinal performance, consistent reaction between the two axles, and better steering response.\

Having my first dibs on the Senna, mastering this machine is worth a challenge to me because that massive retractable rear wing really delivers too much grip so drifting in this car is worth the fuss and when taken on the straights, even a balls-out Koenigsegg or a Bugatti Chiron will eat the Senna for brunch. Still, despite its faults, it's worth a shot to experience what the McLaren Senna is made of, delivering the ultimate experience in a way drivers couldn't imagine before and that is the absolute connection between man and machine and here in England, the Senna really shines like the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and that's what makes this Ultimate Series McLaren very special in every single way.

I had a lot of fun to talk about my first dibs with the one-and-only McLaren Senna hypercar but it's time for me to put the Senna to the test to see if this is the McLaren to end all McLarens. Since this game is all about the United Kingdom and the change of time, weather, and seasons, the sounds of the clock gave me a brainwave and with that, it's time to shift gears.

BOOM! What do you think? The change of time, the change of weather, the change of seasons, it makes sense for someone who fights against the dystopic future envisioned by a certain...woman. Huh? If that mystery caped man who knows my destiny pops up, he could have labeled me "king" but no matter. King or no king, this one's ready to turn the clocks on this challenge.

Called The Colossus, it's a mega sprint race to the streets of Edinburgh but despite bearing a very long distance, the Senna feels like it can time break through Edinburgh is easy as 1-2-3.  BOOM! It ain't no mega-bomb in the Boom game but this Senna says "I'm ready to be a king" so without further ado, fire away, King!

Intense, heart-pounding, thrilling, they're three words to describe the Senna in every single way and although it pains me to say this, I'm starting to love the McLaren Senna very much and I want to drive this hypercar again and again and again unless my game of King is over. Whether you are ready to defy fate here in the UK or you are prepared to devote yourself to the King, look no further than wielding the wheel of the Senna. The McLaren Senna. Now, go! The King awaits you!

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: President Moon replaces two key officials

President Moon Jae-in replaced Finance Minister, who also doubles the role as the deputy Prime Minister Kim Dong-yeon and the chief presidential policy chief Jang Ha-sung with Hong Nam-ki, currently the head of the government policy co-ordination office and Kim Soo-hyun, presidential social policy aide, respectively.

The key from Friday's face-off in the administration's economic sector, comes with the backdrop of the government sticking with the president's push to create 'inclusive nation' with 'one economic team'.
Meanwhile, reports of a discord between the top economic chief duos had been constantly looming, over their differing views on key economic policies and on the recent economic situation engulfing the nation.

The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, says the planned high-level talks between U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart Kim Yong-chol, was postponed by the North, simply due to the regime's lack of readiness.
Despite the abrupt cancellation, Haley says she believes the talks will be rescheduled, and that President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un will meet next year.

But because the North hasn't taken any significant steps on denuclearization, Haley says sanctions have to remain in place.
Meanwhile, citing various officials following the negotiations, CNN reported that North Korea was "really angry" the U.S. has yet to give them any sanctions relief. It added the North probably decided it wouldn't get much out of the talks, without the U.S. making such a gesture.

South Korea's special presidential advisor Moon Chung-in also says the meeting was cancelled because of Pyeongyang and Washington's differences on the sanctions issue.

Emphasizing the importance of easing the sanctions to move forward, he called on China to play a bigger role, by discussing it with President Trump when they meet on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 summit in Argentina.

Scientists from 15 institutions in 6 countries including Seoul National University, the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Liverpool in the UK have suggested that neutrino technology could be used to verify Pyeongyang's denuclearization.

Neutrinos are one of the lightest and smallest particles that travel at near light speed. Scientists say neutrino detectors can track power levels and fuel evolution in nuclear reactors.

Such neutrino technology has merits for all parties involved in the diplomatic talks with Pyeongyang. South Korea and the United States may value the tamper resistance of the neutrino signal and resilience of neutrino detectors, which can reconstruct a nuclear reactor's operational history from incomplete data.

Japanese politicians have been threatening to take legal action over the South Korean Supreme Court's ruling ordering a Japanese company to compensate workers forced to work for it with no pay during World War Two.

South Korea's Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has expressed "deep regret" over those and other remarks he called "aggressive."
Lee said they were neither "reasonable" nor "wise," and that in a democracy like South Korea, the government cannot meddle in decisions by the judiciary.

The Prime Minister said the Supreme Court's decision did not deny the treaty signed by the two countries in 1965 on compensation, but only clarified its scope when it comes to individuals.
Lee criticized what he called an attempt to trigger a diplomatic dispute over the issue and urged a wise response from Japan.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Trump says he’s ‘in no rush’ after NKorea talks postponed

President Donald Trump said Wednesday the U.S. is “in no rush” after talks between his top diplomat and a senior North Korean envoy were postponed, throwing stalled diplomacy over the North’s nuclear weapons into further uncertainty.

Trump said the meeting, which had been due to take place on Thursday in New York, would be rescheduled, and that he still expected to hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un early next year.

Neither side has properly explained why the planned talks between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, a key aide of the North Korean leader, were postponed. State Department spokesman Robert Palladino described it as “purely a matter of scheduling” but refused to elaborate. The department said the meeting would take place at an unspecified later date, “when our respective schedules permit.” North Korea’s propaganda services have not mentioned the meeting.

There’s been little diplomatic progress in the five months since the June summit in Singapore where the U.S. and North Korean leaders committed to “denuclearization” of the divided Korean Peninsula. Signs are growing of an impasse over how to achieve that goal. News of the postponement came after North Korea’s Foreign Ministry criticized the U.S. on Friday for its continued support of sanctions and hinted it may resume nuclear development.

During a press conference on Wednesday mostly focused on midterm U.S. elections, Trump contended that he had made more progress with North Korea than past administrations, and said that with sanctions still in place, he was not in a hurry to reach a deal with Pyongyang, which has halted nuclear and missile tests for the past year.

“I would love to take the sanctions off, but they have to be responsive too. It’s a two-way street. But we’re not in any rush at all. There’s no rush whatsoever,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

In Seoul, South Korean presidential spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said his government doesn’t believe U.S.-North Korea negotiations have completely broken down or “lost their momentum” because of the postponement. Seoul’s Foreign Ministry also expressed hope that the U.S. and North Korea can quickly reschedule a high-level meeting.

South Korea’s presidential Blue House said the United States had informed it of the talks’ postponement in advance. But the Blue House would not reveal the reason for the postponement, referring questions to the State Department.

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea that spiked last year when Trump and Kim were trading insults and dire threats have ebbed this year, but the North has not taken irreversible steps to give up the nukes it spent decades making and which it views as key to its security. The two sides are deadlocked over when sanctions should be eased, with the U.S. maintaining that it should only happen after denuclearization. The North wants concessions sooner.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Pompeo’s meeting with North Koreans postponed

A meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials set for Thursday in New York has been postponed and will be rescheduled “when our respective schedules permit,” the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.

In a statement, it added, “Ongoing conversations continue to take place,” but did not elaborate.

“The United States remains focused on fulfilling the commitments agreed to by President Trump and Chairman Kim at the Singapore summit in June,” it said.

The exact reason for the postponement was unclear.

Pompeo had been due to hold talks with senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, which were hoped to have opened the way for a second summit of the two countries’ leaders and make progress on denuclearization.

The meeting agenda had been to “discuss making progress on all four pillars of the Singapore Summit joint statement, including achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization” of North Korea, the State Department had said this week.

The June meeting of President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in Singapore was the first summit meeting of an incumbent U.S. president and a North Korean leader.

At that meeting, Kim Jong Un, who seeks relief from tough U.S.-led sanctions, committed to work toward denuclearization, but his steps since have fallen short of U.S. demands for irreversible moves to abandon a weapons program that potentially threatens the United States.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Pompeo to meet N.Korea number two on Thursday

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet North Korea’s number two Kim Yong Chol in New York on Thursday, the State Department said.

They “will discuss making progress on all four pillars of the Singapore Summit joint statement, including achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization,” a statement said, referring to the agreement signed at a June summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The meeting comes with the two sides at loggerheads nearly five months after the summit, in which Trump and Kim pledged to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

North Korea’s foreign ministry has warned that Pyongyang will “seriously” consider reviving its nuclear weapons program unless US sanctions are lifted.

In announcing the meeting with Kim Jong Chol on Sunday, Pompeo said he expected to “make some real progress” including on laying the groundwork for a second summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

Kim Yong Chol is a general, a former top intelligence chief and right-hand man to the North Korean leader.

He visited the White House in the diplomatic run-up to the Singapore summit, and has been Pompeo’s chief interlocutor in the months since.

In mid-October, Pompeo evoked the possibility of a second summit, preceded by talks with Kim Yong Chol.

“We’re working on finding dates and times and places that will work for each of the two leaders,” Pompeo said at the time.
