Let's Do The News! (June 2, 2013)

(cheers and applause)

RH: Uh...any particular reason why would you like the old CLK more than this?

JC: Well, probably because it can do things that the E-Class Coupe can't and most of all, has an AMG version that this one doesn't.

(audience laughing)

JC: Look, one particular reason why Mercedes-Benz didn't add an AMG version for the E-Class Coupe is when during its decision phase, the folks of Mercedes-Benz are deciding what to do on the current E-Class and then, AMG had a different approach, saying that the sedan version of the E-Class is (QUOTE) "the perfect car to be an AMG", so it's a long story.

RH: So, you're saying that the sedan version of the E-Class is the perfect car to be an AMG, why is this?

JC: Beats me. Good thing, they confessed that not adding an AMG version to the E-Class coupe was a big mistake and it's going to be resolved on the next model so in the meantime, I'd would rather stick to the CLK63 Black or for the better...a C63 AMG Black...

(audience laughing)

JC: It's more powerful, you know... Anyway, let's do the news!

JM: Indeed, the news folks, and BIG NEWS because we just heard that Doctor Who's Matt Smith will be retiring his role this Christmas 2013.

(awwww)

JC: Retiring? Matt Smith is retiring his Doctor Who role? He's retiring his BEST JOB in science-fiction history? I don't get it. We had him around for three years since The Eleventh Hour, which was Matt Smith's maiden voyage as the Eleventh Doctor in 2010 and he's the man who propelled Doctor Who as the flagship of BBC with thanks to current showrunner Steven Moffat. Hmmm....Steven F***ing Moffat. What a f***ing liberty...

(audience laughing)

JM: Anyway, the thing is about Mr. Matt Smith is he was voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season, he won Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012 NTA, the first actor to to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role, one who revolutionizes bowties and fezzes as cool stuff, the man who yelled "GERONIMO" in the show, and starred alongside different partners such as Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman). Gosh... I really don't know where to start when Mr. Smith's tenure is up...

JC: Yeah, me too. And having Matt Smith retiring his Doctor Who role is just like Benedict XVI retiring his role as the Pope. Question is, who's going to replace Matt Smith for next year?

JM: Well, you know that current Pope Francis? He's a Latino and he's the one that broke the barriers as the first Latino Pope in Vatican history. Do you think there's going to be a Latin Doctor?

(audience laughing)

JC: A Latino playing The Doctor? Well, possibly but there is a main theory about how actors getting the role as Doctor Who. Think of it like..."conclave". A "conclave" for the actors willing to become Doctor Who. When there's black smoke...it's still undecided but when it's white...

JM: There's a new Doctor coming...

(audience laughing)

JM: Yeah...enough about the "conclave" stuff but oh...that reminds me...do you think that mystery man's going to be next?

JC: Who?

JM: Some mystery man who appeared at the Series 7 finale of Doctor Who titled "The Name of The Doctor".  Do you think he could be...IT?

(audience laughing)

JC: I don't know man but it's still a mystery so in the meantime...SPOILERS.

(audience laughing)

JC: Still, no matter the outcome, Doctor Who or no longer, it's still Matt Smith. We had high hopes for his life after Doctor Who and we also wait for the one where Matt Smith directed at...It's called "How To Catch a Monster". We're looking forward for Matt Smith, even life after Doctor Who.

(cheers and applause)

(♫ "EVERYTHING'S BETTER WITH PERRY" plays ♫)

JC: What the?

RH: Oh, sorry. Text message...

(audience laughing)

JC: Anyway, tomorrow, most Filipinos are going to school either fully prepared or empty handed for now and the thing about first day of SY 2013-2014 is, how come students all over the nation after spending a two-month vacation are going to survive this new school year? I mean, there's some meeting of friends and enemies new and old alike, new subjects to learn, the K to 12 stuff, even more aggressive teachers, graded recitations, monthly and quarterly exams, Ibong Adarna, El Filibusterismo, so on, so forth, that's school life! How can students new and old alike can survive a new year of schooling?

JM: I don't know man. Maybe those changes were just one thing to make this school year a bit more complicating than the past. But there are some good moments such as competitions, foundation weeks, and the best bit of school year was...field trip.

JC: Field trip?

JM: Yep. It's when the entire school goes out for some adventure time in different places and sometimes they even give them a piece of day-off from school by swimming at some of the best resorts a student knows where. Sometimes, it's getting a bit too PBB teens...

(audience laughing)

JC: PBB Teens?

JM: Yes. Even in school life, there are some moments that are too...PBB Teens...

(audience laughing)

JM: Think of it like, for instance, you're in a costume party as...Finn. Then, all of your friends are dressing as their favorite Adventure Time characters such as PB (Princess Bubblegum), Marceline, Ice King, Lumpy, BMO, or Jake. When you guys get together...what do you call?

JC: Oh wait...PBB Teens?

(audience laughing)

RH: Uh, guys...Can you please enough of these PBB Teens nonsense! Can we please move on?!

JC: Okay. Sorry about that...(whispering) This is getting too PBB Teens...

(audience laughing)

JC: Anyway, there's a new game coming from Namco Bandai and it's available in the PS3 and PS Vita gaming console. It's called Super Heroine Chronicle and think of it like um...just like all the other crossover RPG games like Heroes Phantasia and Project X Zone. For this crossover RPG, heroines from several franchises join forces to save the world, ranging from Di Gi Charat, Koto from Kyousogiga, Red Angel and Blue Angel from Twin Angel, Super Sonico, Rena Ryugu from Higurashi (When They Cry), Hibiki Tachibana from Symphogear, Aria H. Kanzaki from Aria: The Scarlet Ammo, Houki Shinonono from IS, Louise from The Familiar of Zero, and Rem Ayanokouji from Dream Hunter Rem. Here's the clip that sums up...

(cheers and applause)

RH: Wow! Another mashup of the best anime heroines in one game since the other mashup RPG games like Namco X Capcom, Heroes Phantasia, and Project X Zone. Can't get any better than this!

JC: Agreed, Hammond! And that's the news!

JM: Yeah and before we end the news, since Hammond got his ringtone set to Everything's Better With Perry, do you think this is the best Phineas and Ferb song of all time? Or what about I'm Me? Do you think this is better? Log on to http://disneychannel.disney.com/phineas-and-ferb and look for the VOTE link where you'll be decide which of your favorite P&F song will be the best and tune in on Disney Channel this June 28 and let special guest Kelly Osbourne counting down the best P and F songs in order.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet Minor Change

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet

Along with the sedan and estate, the coupe versions and cabriolet versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W212 were given a minor change as well. Although it is essentially a minor change for these two-door brothers thanks to its new schnoz, it feels like it has nothing in common with the sedan and tourer equivalents because...well, let's find out...

First of all, it's still not as sporty to drive as the sedan and tourer equivalents even though two-doors is enough to call it a driver-focused model of the E-Class family. Think about it, folks. Even though the Coupe and Cabriolet E-Class models are more than enough to satisfy an unnecessary selfie, it's not quite qualified to be more of a thoroughbred rather than being a sophisticated two-door saloon car for the privileged few who are always self-centered. Alpha males just don't get it because even though the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet were made just for them, they would rather go for the old-fashioned CLK instead because...well, you know why.

Anyway, while these two are not classified to be called "sports cars", both the new E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet models are designed to be more of an "everyday car" because if you were the sort of selfie who takes them out for a stroll in, well, let's just say EDSA or Quezon City, or Bonifacio Global City, these cars were made to be head-turners because when every time there's someone saw you around driving one of those, you'd be rather be mistaken for a high-profile celebrity going out for a dinner with a special someone that you can't tell to anyone.

Of course, rather than being a head-turner, it's a comfortable car as well. It's like you're making a bland mushroom soup from a can very exciting to eat by putting some milk and some tuna. I like it. I made that meal myself, though. Anyway, while it has the feeling of sipping your freshly cooked meal, there is a bit of a problem about these; they're not quite exciting to drive those either, even when you take these on one of the world's best driving roads. It feels like that you went to the best rollercoaster in town and 5 seconds later, it's over. It's not quite an Enchanted Kingdom-level of excitement but rather...a Pixie Forest-level of excitement. Oh, and if you don't know what a Pixie Forest was, it's on the Festival Supermall. Those who find it boring don't go there and instead go to X-Site. It's more fun though.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet interior

Engine ranges include a 2.0L turbo petrol engine, 3.0L V6 turbo petrol engine, a 2.1L diesel engine, and a 3.0L V6 diesel engine may seem to be rather fine but it seems that none of those engine types that tickles your fancy. Even with the most powerful engine in the lineup which produces 333hp of power and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, it feels a bit Jon Tickle than a tickle machine and even if you're acting like a Brainiac like what speedo boys do, it's not quite more exciting even though it's short on power compared to its AMG-badged predecessor, the old CLK which was built until 2009. Boo...

Like the four-door equivalents, both the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet also comes with host of safety features, most that will be appeared on the next S-Class, such as  PRE-SAFE PLUS, ATTENTION ASSIST driver drowsiness monitor, Driver Assistance Package with DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control with Steering Assist and PRE-SAFE Brake, plus Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist, and PARKTRONIC with enhanced Active Parking Assist. Not only this car is more of an everyday car, it's safer as well because thanks to all of these features, this car cares about the driver more than the car itself. Hmmm...

Meh...I'd rather not sold to this new model anyway. With times like this, best to go back to the old CLK instead because not only it's more exciting to drive than the new E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, it has the hotter version that these two...isn't. Fat chance, kid. Fat chance...

Let's Do The News! (June 1, 2013)

JM: And now the news, and yes, Vauxhall revealed the all new VXR8. Here it is now...

2014 Vauxhall VXR8
(ooohh)

JM: Yep. Still sourced from Australia like the original, but now comes with the same 6.2-litre V8 that powers the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 so it produces about 576bhp of power and 545lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful VXR8 yet.

JC: I had to say that 576bhp of power is quite more than enough to eat the E63 AMG and the M5 for breakfast but the question is by what margin?

RH: Well, I don't know. Unless you're Aussie, you'll say...ahem (in Australian accent) Strewth!

(audience laughing)

JC: Indeed it was but since this is just a muscle car with four doors, I bet I'm looking forward to try out the best VXR8 ever. Okay, while sticking on the General Motors issue, Chevrolet revealed their emergency minor change for the...um...Malibu. Here it is...

2014 Chevrolet Malibu
JC: You know, why did Chevrolet facelifted a car that was launched a year ago? How's that possible?

RH: Well, in my theory, maybe because of the build quality issues because when it was launched two years ago in South Korea, it doesn't seem quite bothering to them and then in China, Europe, and Australia as a Holden Malibu. But in the US, it's a different story because they didn't like it and they have migrated to its Asian rivals. So to solve this, the front face for the 2014 Malibu took some styling inspirations from its big brother, the Impala. Also, the new 2.5L engine for the Malibu is rather too focused on fuel economy rather than performance...

JC: Huh? So, there has been a power drop like what just happened on the...well, you know...

RH: Yep. Minus one for the power output and less torquey as well, all in the name of fuel economy of 35mpg highway thanks to some start-stop system that shuts the engine off when stopped and then start again when you set off. It also comes with a turbocharged 2.0L variant which now comes with added torque. Too bad we still not having a word from UK Chevrolet when we will get one. I mean look...

JC: Too American...As American as a Big Mac...

(audience laughing)

JC: And I can't believe I ate some Big Mac during lunch time...  He he he.... Anyway, moving on and some tragic news that while two weeks ago, a massive tornado hits Oklahoma which sends ten-thousands of homes crushed. Anyone heard the news? Now, recently, another strong tornado hits Oklahoma city and all we can hope now for the safety of Oklahomans is...well, like we always do...PRAY.

RH: Indeed. I'd suggest you guys shall pray for the safety of Oklahomans, especially those from Tornado Alley. Stay safe!

(applause)

JC: Okay, now moving on... You know those Wikipedia pages we often use for referential purposes? Yep, we often use this site for something something everyday, especially looking on what's what behind our favorite stuff. You guys use Wikipedia, right? Hands up...

(some audience raising hands)

JC: Anyway, I just found something on the internet that there's a list of 100 most "controversial" topics in Japanese Wikipedia page defined by the number of edits.

(audience laughing)

RH: Define "controversial" and "number of edits", can these user-generated articles from the Wikipedia page can't get any worse than that?

JC: Beats me. 100 most controversial topics in Japanese Wikipedia but let me tell you a hint. The number one topic of dispute in the US Wikipedia was...wait for it...wait for it...former US President George W. Bush because of the number of edit wars when it comes to grammar, references, so on, so forth. But, we're tackling on the top 100 topics from Japanese Wikipedia and here's the list...written in Japanese. Ready?

JM: Uh...can't we shorten it up to top 10? I'm afraid we won't have much time mentioning 100 controversial topics straight from the Wikipedia Japan.

(audience laughing)

JC: Thanks James for your consideration. Anyway, due to time constraints, let's just mention the ten most controversial Wikipedia Japan topics, okay? Here goes...

RH: Hmmm...Kinda interesting that AKB48 and ONE PIECE were on that list and...what's that on the number one list?

JC: Probably says...“zainichi Koreans.

(audience laughing)

JM: Anyway, enough about that stuff and that's the end of the news. Anyway, while on the topic of which is the best P&F song of all time since Gitchee Gitchee Goo, do you think There's s Platypus Controlling Me is the best P&F song of all time? Or what about AGLET? Do you think this is the best Phineas and Ferb song of all time? So many of you have been logging on to the internet and vote for your favorite Phineas and Ferb song. If you want to vote for your favorite song, log on to http://disneychannel.disney.com/phineas-and-ferb and look for the VOTE link where you'll be decide which of your favorite P&F song will be the best and tune in on Disney Channel this June 28 and let special guest Kelly Osbourne counting down the best P&F songs in order.

JC: Yes, indeed. And that really was the end of the news, folks.

GRID 2

GRID 2 (PS3 Version)

Five years ago, the British-based Codemasters launched GRID (formally known as Race Driver Grid) and this game set the standards on racing simulation genre. Now, this BAFTA-award winning multi-million selling video game gets a sequel and it promises to be more over-the-top than the previous installment but sadly though, it lacks something that it rival racing games had.

The biggest change first was the loss of the "cockpit view" because research shows that most players of the previous game prefer racing in driver view because it's much more precise than cockpit view. Who wouldn't but sometimes, they just switch to the car's view...blah blah...but never mind about that. The loss of the cockpit view is just the least of our problems we're facing in this new chapter of Race Driver Grid.

Welcome to the WSR, a new motorsport series which sets out to find the ultimate racer. Behind the new age racing is an investor who believes that life is a race and he intends to win but to create a new racing series, he needs a star and do you got what it takes to earn the respect from the investor? That's where you'll find out in GRID 2.

GRID 2 offers a wide selection of cars divided into different tiers, grouping together contrasting classes of cars. From muscle cars, hot hatchbacks, tuner cars, classics, open-wheelers, exotics, you name the rest. BMW E30 M3, Subaru BRZ, Ford Mustang Boss 302, Nissan R34 Skyline Nismo Z-tune, McLaren MP4-12C, Ariel Atom, Koenigsegg Agera R, Pagani Huayra, there are loads of them in Grid 2. The difference between a win and loss is all depends to the strengths and weaknesses of both man and machine. Don't forget that when you're out there...

After getting to know about the cars, you'll get to know more about different types of tracks you'll be conquering and it takes the skill of the driver to master through different corners with ease. Whether if it’s the crowd-filled city streets, real-world race tracks, and the open roads, whichever the route you'll take, it's going to be far more different what it used to be and it's up to the driver to master different corners using whichever means necessary. Overtaking, drifting, slipstream, you'll do the rest. Do whatever it takes to win the race, okay?

Also, there's this new feature that will make you notice in city racing of the game and that's the LiveRoutes. What is LiveRoutes? Some say that LiveRoutes dynamically streams in alternate parts of city tracks. When it kicks in, it selects which direction of the track should go, either straight, left, or right, depending on your driving style. For example, when you're entering a certain corner for the second time, it could be either 80mph as you approached on a tight corner or 200mph as you slingshot through the straight. LiveRoutes really add a whole new challenge in Grid 2 so watch out!

In Single Player campaign, the only way to work through the top of the WSR is to face against the finest racing clubs from the USA, Europe, and Asia. In multiplayer modes, every race matters – earn XP and cash for unlocks as you expand your garage and move through the tiers.

Also in multiplayer, you can tune your car with performance upgrades or you can even create your own paint jobs to personalize your car. Remind you of any? Oh, well, multiplayer gameplay on GRID 2 is just one of the most important aspects in gaming and oh...if you have a RaceNet account, you can track down your progress of your races, rivals and rewards. To earn followers, you have to win several races and do better in races. You can also steal followers from your rivals by racing against them. Not just that, you can gain more followers by taking part in online competitions, participating in community Global Challenges, completing RaceNet Objectives and uploading some of your GRID 2 moments to YouTube. Interesting...

So, things I can say about the new GRID 2 game; it may have a power selection of the finest cars and the finest selection of real world locations and it may have realistic racing feel but it feels a bit too soulless. It knocks me cold and there's not even a zing that interest me the most while playing GRID 2. It feels like that it's not quite ready to recommend this game to any racing fan you know because it doesn't feel a bit more exciting as the other racing games.

And now, the week in review of what's what at the Korean peninsula...

The Energy Ministry plans to announce a set of power-saving measures such as considering a fine against businesses that fail to cut their electricity consumption during peak hours as well as restricting the temperature range inside large or public buildings.

- The US State Department released its annual State Sponsors of Terrorism list and it designated Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria as nations which "repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism". Those countries are heavily sanctioned by Washington for their illicit activities. Let's Do The News! (May 31, 2013)

River's Diary

Right, what's the news today you spoiler-laden TARDIS journal?

The topic about banning softdrinks and junk food at your cafeteria

A couple of days ago, I saw something at the news that most schools in the Philippines are considering banning softdrinks and other forms of junk food sold in their cafeterias. Well, of course, because school starts this Monday in most schools in the Philippines, the officials are taking things seriously about preventing their cafeterias from selling softdrinks and junk food. I mean, what will exactly happen when this was in effect? Well, as many experts can tell you that both softdrinks and junk food are bad for everyone and banning those will help solve obesity...but is it worth it? I believe not because most of us can't resist the temptation of those we ate and drank everyday during recess time. Wow...

COMING SOON: The Ninth-Generation Accord

Next month, Honda Motor Co., Ltd will be releasing the much-awaited ninth-generation Honda Accord and it is essentially available ONLY in sedan with the hybrid-powertrain only. Yep, the next-generation Accord will be a hybrid-only saloon, just like the Toyota Camry two years ago. Also, aside from being a full-hybrid sedan, it will be the first to implement Honda's SPORT HYBRID i-MMD (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive), which has three distinct driving modes to choose from; EV Drive allows the car to run on pure electric mode, Engine Drive that is suitable for medium to high speeds. and Hybrid Drive lets both the electric motor and the gasoline engine join forces in case of heavy acceleration and stop-and-go city driving.

SPORT HYBRID i-MMD implementation to the all-new 2014 Honda Accord promises a JC08 fuel economy of 30.0km/L, making it the most fuel efficient car in the lineup and it's much more fuel efficient than the Honda Insight.

Look for more about the all new Accord when it launches this June 20, 2013 and on sale the day after it launches at your nearest Honda Cars dealership.

Corvette C7 Stingray and Bugatti Veyron joins Transformers 4, Bumblebee gets a new look

The fourth Transformers movie maybe not due until next year but there's going to be new Autobot recruits in the corner as well as new looks for our favorite Autobots Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.

Yep. That's definitely more than meets the eye because the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and the Bugatti Veyron will be joining the Autobots and then...

Bumblebee is now a modified 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS. Hmmm...too old-fashioned but cool!

Third-generation BMW X5 revealed

2014 BMW X5

BMW finally revealed the new generation of the founder of the SPORT ACTIVITY VEHICLE craze, the BMW X5. Look at this new look...hideous isn't it? The headlamp+kidney grille combo was fine on the latest 3-Series but here in the new X5...oh boy. Looks like another village idiot in the family of geniuses, eh? But there's more to it than that because at launch, it will be offered in three engines: a 3.0-liter turbo straight six, a 4.4-liter turbo V8, and an all-new 3.0-liter turbo diesel straight six you can expect on the hot X5 M50d. For the first time, an optional rear-wheel drive powertrain was offered alongside with the traditional 4WD configuration.

MAZDA BIANTE SKYACTIV

Back in 2008, Mazda launched the Biante exclusively for the Japanese market. Then, a year later, moments after Mazda introduced i-stop to their second-generation Axela, the Biante also gets the i-stop system for enhanced fuel economy. Now, just after Mazda filling up the SKYACTIV portfolio with the Demio, the Axela, the CX-5, the Atenza, and the Premacy, the Biante (and its stylish Biante Granz) joins the SKYACTIV family. Like the Premacy SKYACTIV a couple of months ago, the new Biante SKYACTIV is offered in SKYACTIV 2.0 G engine which comes with direct injection and mated with SKYACTIV-DRIVE double clutch transmission. Fuel economy is now 14.8km/L based on JC08 Mode standards.

Check it out at: http://www.biante.mazda.co.jp/

Seat Leon SC

2014 Seat Leon SC

For the past two generations, the Seat Leon is available exclusively as a 5-door hatch but for the third-generation Leon, things are about to change because starting with the third-generation, which was built on the new MQB platform, Seat plans to expand the new Leon with new body styles to choose from, starting with this.

This new 3-door Leon SC version is the driver-oriented version of the Leon range and any particular reason why there is another 3-door Seat in the making is a complete mystery for now. You see the only driver-oriented Seat offered (with the exception of Cupra which is sort of a hot version) was the Ibiza SC because with so much lightness and so much driver-focused orientation, the Ibiza SC was the enjoyable one but why would they need a bigger brother of the Ibiza SC anyway? Word: Don't expect them to be sitting down to your future Gran Turismo garage because they don't even got the deserving characteristics to be on the next Gran Turismo 6 game. Sorry...

Anyway, what's it all about this three-door nonsense version of the Leon? You know that the Leon is available only in 5-door just like the rest of it but how come everything's changed when they offered this...three door Leon?! Let's find out...

It's like the normal Leon, the third-generation model which was built on an entirely new platform that was applied on the seventh-generation Golf, but because this is a much driver-oriented model, the new Leon SC was focused on being sleek and sporty rather than just your average hatchback that was normally used on a rather typical day in your overalls.

It also has this clever interior which comes with a touch screen that touches your nerves and some lighting which changes every time when a driver engaged different driving settings like when the driver engages SPORT MODE, the lights glow red. Very unique if you opted for the FR model of this car. Also, because this is the 3-door version, your friends will have a very hard time getting access to the rear seats because with so less rear space and thanks for being a driver-focused model, you'll becoming more of an unnecessary selfie. Get it? A selfie!

2014 Seat Leon SC

Like its 5-door cousin, the 3-door model Leon SC also comes with a 1.2 TSi, 1.4 TSi, 1.8 TSi, 1.6 TDi, and a 2.0 TDi engine. Yep, most of the engine lineup were exclusively turbocharged so every time you're driving with one of these, you'll say WHOA...you'll say AHHH...you'll say WHEE...but it isn't. Also, even though it has a refined suspension, it's not what you called comfortable but exciting because far from the driving feel, it's not quite you can call it either comfortable or exciting. It may feel okay in the driving feel department but it's not quite as refined as a bottomless iced tea that you often drink at your nearest fancy restaurant.

In essence then, the Leon SC maybe a driver-oriented version of the Leon made for the selfies but sometimes, it lacks the utter fanciness that you get in other 3-door hatchbacks. It can be somewhat uncomfortable, it can be a bit old-fashioned, and in many other ways...it is ugly.
