Nintendo Switch 2

Launched in 2017, the Nintendo Switch quickly became one of the best-selling consoles in history due to its versatility, allowing players to enjoy games both at home on a TV screen and on the go. It became an essential device for Nintendo fans. Now, after eight years, a worthy successor has arrived, promising to function just like the original Switch but with improved features.

Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2

It's called the Nintendo Switch 2. Starting at 49,980 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, Nintendo insists that this is the worthy successor to the original Nintendo Switch, which promises to carry on the predecessor's flexibility but with new and exciting ways to get hooked.

How much has the Switch 2 changed compared to the original Switch? Although the thickness of the device is the same as before, the display is now larger at 7.9 inches, and thanks to improved graphics, playing games has never felt so alive as before, especially when you play it on your 4K TV via its dedicated dock.

The rear stand now occupies the entire console, and it features a free-stop system, allowing users to freely tilt it to an angle that is just right to see while playing.

The Switch 2 introduces a new Joy-Con 2 controller that can be easily attached with a magnet. The strong magnetic force keeps it firmly attached without wobbling, meaning it cannot be removed by even a tiny force, but you can easily detach it with one hand by pressing the button on the back.

In addition, the Joy-Con 2 controllers work like a mouse pointer, meaning you can do stuff that requires precise aiming, so you can enjoy games in a different style of play than before.

The Nintendo Switch 2 allows players to interact with others while playing online (requires subscription) courtesy of its built-in microphone and the new C button on the Joy-Con 2. With the available USB camera (sold separately), you can engage in webchat with other players.

Before you ask, no, you can't livestream your gameplay on the Switch 2, just like with the original Nintendo Switch. This means you won't be able to broadcast your gameplay for longplay purposes. Instead, you can only take snapshots and record 30-second clips, which you can save to its 256GB internal memory or to compatible microSD EX memory cards, which are different from standard microSD cards.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible with nearly all existing Nintendo Switch games, as well as new titles made exclusively for it. Some of these new games include "Mario Kart World," "Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour," and Konami's idol-raising game titled "Shine Post: Be Your Idol!", among others. Additionally, certain Nintendo Switch games, such as "Super Mario Party Jamboree," "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," and "Pokémon Scarlet/Violet," have received upgrades to take advantage of the Switch 2's enhanced capabilities. That said, a Switch 2 game card can be differentiated from the Switch game card by the color of its cartridge, as Switch 2 game cards are colored red.

Best of all, you can transfer most of your data from your Switch to your Switch 2 console. Games and content you've bought digitally can be loaded via a Virtual Game Card. You can continue to use your current Nintendo Switch Online subscription, can still use Nintendo Parental Controls Switch, and can still use your existing controllers.

And there you have it. The Nintendo Switch 2 is by no means one of the must-haves of 2025 in the midst of the new normal. It carries the same flexibility as its predecessor, with new and exciting ways to get hooked for more. Nintendo must be serious, stating that they've bet on the company's future with the arrival of the Switch 2, and with such sales, rest assured that the Switch 2 is another one of Nintendo's success stories. It is a worthy successor to the original Switch, and the whole world is hunting for it.

Time to make the Switch to the new Nintendo Switch 2.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung pledges to 'unite' country

Just hours after winning the South Korean presidency, Lee Jae-myung has pledged to "unite the people" in his inauguration speech on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old won a snap election by 49.4% - a clear rejection of his rival, Kim Moon-soo, who came from the same party as impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol.

Yoon triggered months of political chaos after he attempted to impose martial law, which eventually resulted in his impeachment.

As he takes on the top job, Lee now faces the daunting task of not only uniting the country, but also balancing ties with its most important ally, the US, under President Trump's unpredictable brand of diplomacy.

In a clear reference to his predecessor, the Democratic Party's Lee said in his address that he would "never again" allow democratic institutions to be threatened, adding that he would "become a president who ends the politics of division".

Speaking to a crowd in front of parliament - where just over six months ago he jumped over the perimeter wall to vote down Yoon's martial law declaration - Lee blamed the country's political turmoil on "political factions with no desire to work for the lives of the people".

He also pledged to build a "flexible, pragmatic government" and announced that an emergency economic task force would be "activated immediately".

It's a remarkable comeback for a man who has been caught in several political scandals, from investigations over alleged corruption to family feuds - though analysts and officials say his win was a clear capitalisation of public anger.

"The people judged the December 3 martial law [incident] as a violation of democracy," National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik told BBC Korean in an exclusive interview.

"This election was not only a judgment on that, but also a reflection of the public's demand to properly restore democratic principles."

Woo said the result was "a fair reflection of the will of the people" and "clearly expressed the people's intent".

This was echoed by Park Sung-min, president of Min Consulting, who said voters were not "necessarily expressing strong support for Lee's agenda - rather, they were responding to what they saw as a breakdown of democracy".

"The election became a vehicle for expressing outrage... [and] was a clear rebuke of the ruling party, which had been complicit in or directly responsible for the martial law measures," he said.

Dozens of Lee supporters gathered in front of parliament on Wednesday, hoping to catch a glimpse of the president - with many saying they were excited to see what he would achieve.

"I'm so happy he was elected - I stayed here all night in order to see the inauguration ceremony," Leo Kil, a software engineer, told the BBC.

"I believe he will carry out his basic promises, like creating a fair world. I hope South Korea becomes a country where people who commit wrongs receive the consequences of the law and laws are enforced as promised with the people. I have really high expectations."

Yoo Gi-won, another Lee supporter, said that "Yoon's presidency made me feel like the country is going to be ruined. I saw everyone around me suffering".

"For a while South Korea has been cold place [but now] I'm so, so happy," he added.

But as the fanfare fades, Lee will be left facing a daunting reality.

For one, he is still facing a trial in the Supreme Court over charges of violating election laws. The court postponed the trial until after the election to avoid interference, as a conviction could have barred Lee from contesting.

It's not clear what happens if Lee is now found guilty, though the law says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted for criminal offences, with the exception of insurrection or treason.

Greater still is his challenge of bringing together a nation that is still racked by deep anger and division.

"Years of escalating polarisation under both the [previous] Moon and Yoon administrations have left South Korea's political landscape bitterly divided," Mr Park said.

"Lee may speak of national unity, but he faces a profound dilemma: how to pursue accountability for what many view as an attempted insurrection without deepening the very divisions he seeks to heal."

Despite the PPP's loss, ex-President Yoon still has a considerably strong and vocal support base - and it is unlikely to go away anytime soon.

His supporters, mainly young male voters and the elderly, often push strong right-wing narratives, and many of them believe his declaration of martial law was necessary to protect the country.

Many also peddle conspiracy theories, believing Yoon's party was a victim of election fraud.

With Yoon gone, there are questions about who might fill the vacuum for this predominantly young, male base.

One name in particular has emerged: Lee Jun Seok, who also ran for president, but dropped out earlier on Tuesday when exit polls suggested he was trailing too far behind.

He has been especially popular with many young men for his anti-feminist views, which has reminded some of Yoon, under whom equality for women became a polarising subject.

Young men in their 30s came out in higher numbers than usual to vote this time, drawn in part by candidates like Lee Jun-seok.

Those wanting to hold the PPP-led government accountable, as well as others wanting to ensure Lee Jae-myung's presidency was dashed, led to this year's voter turnout reaching 79.4% - the highest since 1997.

And so it is in this political climate that Lee takes over - hoping to transform public fury into hope.

How - and if - he might do that, is a question that will be closely watched.

My FM Log: Spirit of Forza Motorsport - Ferrari 458

2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the Forza Motorsport series. To commemorate this milestone, let’s take a look back at the cover cars from the Forza Motorsport franchise, starting with the very first game released in 2005 and continuing through to the final installment launched in 2023.

2009 Ferrari 458 Italia

Let's continue with the Ferrari 458 Italia, the supercar that headlined the last Forza Motorsport game of the Xbox 360 era, Forza Motorsport 4.

2009 Ferrari 458 Italia

Launched in 2009, the Ferrari 458 Italia serves as the replacement for the F430, marking a significant evolution in Ferrari's design and engineering philosophy, blending craftsmanship and technology.

Behind the Pininfarina styling, the 458 is powered by a 4.5L naturally aspirated V8 engine producing 570HP of power and 398 ft-lb of torque. Mated to a 7-speed F1-style dual-clutch gearbox, it sprints from 0-100kph in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 325kph.

The 458 features an aluminum spaceframe that contributes to its lightweight construction. The suspension system features front double wishbones and a rear multilink setup. Equipped with the most advanced traction control systems, including E-Diff and F1-Trac, it offers exceptional dynamics and stability befitting a supercar.

The 458 is the last mid-engine Ferrari supercar to feature a naturally aspirated engine. It was replaced by its turbocharged successor, the 488, in 2015.

2009 Ferrari 458 Italia

Let's have a commemorative lap around the sacred ground of F1's Spanish Grand Prix, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, demonstrating the feeling behind the wheel of the last mid-engine Ferrari supercar to feature a naturally aspirated engine. Roll the tape.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is not just a supercar; it demonstrates performance that goes beyond limits, similar to how Forza Motorsport 4 exceeded expectations as an Xbox 360 game.

AN ENTIRELY NEW CAR EXPERIENCE

Next time, let's take a look at the McLaren P1, the star car of Forza Motorsport 5.
