Gran Turismo 6: The maiden voyage

Hello, welcome to my first ever blog regarding what's what in the world of Gran Turismo 6. Day One involves the first playable car in the game and that's none other than the second-generation Honda Fit RS.

Things to know about the 2010 Honda Fit RS:

1) This is the facelifted version of the second-generation Fit
2) This is the sporty model
3) The facelifted second-generation model was launched in Autumn 2010
4) This is the only beginner car in GT6

Reason why this is the only beginner car in Gran Turismo 6? Well, when you start up the game, there's the tutorial where at the start, you'll drive the 2010 Renault Clio RS one lap round Brands Hatch and then after, you are at the main menu where the tutorial will direct you to the 2010 Honda Fit RS at the dealerships. Well, you get the idea but what's like driving in the only starter car in the game? The car served as Page One of your GT6 career?

Well, as a beginner's car, it's not half bad but it's not half good either. It maybe more of a sportier version of the Fit but once I face this car to the corner, I get a fair bit of understeer. It's as swift as a jungle bolo trying to cut through a full-grown thorn. Ouch. Perhaps no wonder the Fit supplanted Honda's lineup in Japan while the Civic was removed from the list, therefore this compact hatchback doesn't feel a bit too much of a hot hatch.

Although it weighs about a thousand kilos, it feels a bit heavier. I'd never seen a sporty Honda hatch like this that doesn't feel as sporty as its rivals. However, this first impression was just the tip of the iceberg and for that, I gave the second-generation Fit RS a bit of a challenge, just to find out how good this thing is...

For that, I take on the first Seasonal Event of the new game and oh, to access the Online Features such as Lobby and Seasonal Events, you must have the National A License first before accessing it. Well, you get the idea but anyway, onto the first Seasonal Event...

On this event, my 2010 Fit RS should be wearing Comfort Soft tyres or less, has a PP of 380 or below, and no nitrous allowed. Quite amazed that the Nitrous feature from GT4 make a comeback in GT6 but anyway, I tuned my 2010 Fit RS to meet the 380 PP regulations and for me, it's all power to me because in theory, more power will make me win but who cares.

Despite my added power, it seems I made my 2010 Fit RS' handling a bit worse, even in the small corners of the GT Arena Layout A, the one where you race with your go-karts. Despite my catastrophic understeers, I manage to beat the Gold target time and my record is 0:34.164. I think my Fit RS needs improvement but this is the best I can do today.

So, while the 2010 Honda Fit RS may not be the only beginner car you are relying on but hey, this is the car that served as the first page of your GT6 legacy. Here in GT6, you have so much to expect, so much to see, new places to go, new cars to try, and new challenges to face. It's all up to you to progress your GT6 journey just the way you are.

Good luck on your GT6 maiden voyage, racers! Perhaps no wonder the Honda Fit RS' 10 served as the maiden voyage on your GT6 journey.

When we last saw the death of Family Guy's talking pooch Brian in an episode titled "Life of Brian", fans were shocked about the sudden twist of events. A report from Comicbook.com pointed out that our favorite pooch will be making a comeback anytime but how? Some say, he could pop out at the Christmas special...

Trust us on this, it's gonna be like Kenny from South Park or Rory from Doctor Who because they both die several times.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, 1918 – 2013

Nelson Mandela

It is with regret that the revered and beloved South African anti-apartheid legend who made him become the country's first black president, Nelson Mandela, died at the age of 95. World leaders payed respects to the well-respected person who spent 27 years in prison, fought the apartheid, and became a leader of his own country in the past. He inspired numerous activists, became a high-profile personality, won a Nobel Peace Prize, and raise millions for humanitarian causes.

4) Thai King Adulyadej begs for "stability"

5) 2015 Z06 teased

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 teaser

The C7 Corvette has been a talk-of-a-town but for next year's NAIAS in Detroit, Michigan, Chevrolet will unveil the new-generation Z06. Stay tuned for more.

Gran Turismo 6

The Gran Turismo series is one of the most famous PlayStation-exclusive video games in ages ever since the first installment was launched in Japan since December 1997 and then worldwide a year later. During its lifespan, the Gran Turismo franchise scored 7 million copies sold worldwide from the first one to 2010's GT5 and with the series now on its 15th birthday, the biggest birthday bash for the series is of course...a new installment to the franchise!

Gran Turismo 6

Welcome everyone to Gran Turismo 6, and it's more than just being a birthday present to the series itself, the latest installment promises to be even more evolving than ever and when I say evolving, by how much? Sure, as based on our expectations, I can't believe that they stick to PS3 rather than waiting for PS4 but why? Let me guess...Sony chose to develop GT6 for the current-gen PS3 platform, therefore depriving the devs of a lot of extra processing power that they would have had access to, had they developed for PS4. Oh well, since the PS4 will be debuting in Japan in the February of 2014, no harm done. At least, this is probably the right thing to do.

Where was I? Oh yeah, about the latest installment in the game, GT6 promises to expect more than what you get from last 2010's GT5 and by any means of the over-1200 car lineup ranging from classics, tuners, exotics, novelties, city cars, and so much more, giving players a huge selection of choices to choose from from returning cars like the Lamborghini Aventador, Nissan GT-R, Mercedes-Benz SLS, to newcomers such as SRT Viper, Range Rover Evoque, Toyota Aqua, second-generation Honda Fit, and so much more. Hoping but not expected because the 1200-car lineup is a bit lacking, larger but not big. Not quite clever because this lineup is lacking the latest cars in the world. Oh well, there's always regular updates coming up.

How about tracks? Well, there's going to be more than what you expect in GT6 because with a wide range of World Circuits, City Courses, Original Courses, and Rally Tracks, it's gotta be worth the challenge but I'm afraid there's a bit of a problem and what's that? No Top Gear? Pity. Can't believe that my favorite test track in the world got revoked for numerous reasons but for compensations, GT6 features new tracks like Matterhorn, Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Willow Springs, Bathurst, Goodwood Hill Climb, and (cue the angelic choir) Ascari Race Resort. Quite amazed that Ascari made it on the track list and I bet this is going to be my new proving grounds for the growing car lineup in Gran Turismo 6. What's more, the forgotten Apricot Hill is back with a new twist so everything what you expect from the Apricot Hill of yesteryears is a bit different than what it used to be so you need extra caution to take on the world.

Be wary though because over the course of the GT6 lifespan, there's going to be new courses to be added as a DLC so be ready for more if you're looking for some challenge.

Anyway, moving on, GT6 features a new range of dynamics with a little help of leading companies such as YOKOHAMA and KW Automotive to provide an even more realistic driving experience. It also features Adaptive Tessellation which is the evolution of 3D model rendering. These new physics really pushing the PS3's system beyond boundaries and it results to a more realistic experience, more than enough to salivate the whole players. I have to say that they really made a good job making the graphics of GT6 as top-notch as the other racing games of this magnitude but that's just a theory.

What's more you can expect variable weather, variable daytime, and astronomical simulation giving GT6 a larger than life driving experience that truly reflects real time like the Le Mans 24 hour race in the game will actually simulate the rise/setting hours of the sun and night-time constellations in the sky from the event in 2013. Isn't it cool?

What about online connectivity? Oh yeah, because GT6 features an Open Lobby feature where it is possible to create an open room for up to 16 players to enjoy online racing. There are so much you can do online in GT6 and in future updates, you can form clubs or either jump through the quick match without the hassle.

With all those new features, new car lineup, new courses, and regular updates that will happen over the course of the lifespan, GT6 is surely the Gran Turismo game that will keep you amused for hours but not at all. This is surely a game that gave you the fighting fit to face the world. HAPPY DRIVING!

Chevrolet SS

Remember the Pontiac G8? Yes, it's that FR sports sedan we all indulged for and even though it was an import from Australia, judging by the fact that it's an Americanized Holden VE Commodore, the G8 is still the best V8 sports saloon you can afford. Sadly, this car went to its premature death and Pontiac was killed by General Motors since 2010 over the course of the credit crunch. It's kinda ashamed that Pontiac was officially dead three years ago and the G8 served as the last hurrah for the brand.

Now though, in order to fill the gap where the G8 left off, the folks from Chevrolet called up their Aussie mates from Holden and have their Holden VF Commodore be sold in North America as...a Chevy!

2014 Chevrolet SS

Like the previous Pontiac G8, the dead one, the Chevrolet SS was imported from Australia and even though it was essentially a Holden VF Commodore smothered with burgers and beef jerky, there's a bit of a difference between those two and mainly, their involvement in motorsports. Whereas the VF Commodore enjoyed its newly found reputation in Mt. Panorama, Bathurst, the Chevy SS enjoys itself in the field of NASCAR.

Sheesh, I hate NASCAR. Even Top Gear knows that "NASCAR Sucks", especially at the back of James May's old banger while the boys visited the Southern nation where they got attacked by rednecks. Anyone enjoyed the life of being a Gran Turismo fan has a potential of being a NASCAR fan and hey, since most of the 2013 NASCAR Chevy Power cars are going to be at GT6, this is just baloney. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Juan Montoya, and Tony Stewart, those NASCAR racers got hooked over the raw power of the Chevy SS in stock car form but the most interesting for me is the #88 driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. because...well, that's worth intimidating. I once had a game of Car Town streets and like you and I, we took advantage of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s #88 National Guard CHEVROLET SS' special ability that scares rivals to slowing down. Don't be fooled, this is definitely made to intimidate foes.

If by intimidation, what about the normal SS? It may not be quite as toasty as the V8 Supercar tackling down Bathurst or as intimidating as a NASCAR, well most famously Dale Jr.'s, but in every angle, the new Chevrolet SS does have a little reminder that it has nods to the late Pontiac G8 while staying true to its roots to Chevy's past FR sports saloons. Famously, this is Chevrolet's first FR sports saloon for almost two decades since the fourth-generation Chevrolet Caprice & the seventh-generation Impala SS. Almost two decades? Just how long before Chevrolet managed to make a tail-happy sports saloon?

With prices start at around $43,475, think about it, the SS could be a poor man's BMW M5 but because this is not a suitable rival to the M5, the Chevrolet SS only laughs at the face of...a normal BMW 5-Series, a normal Audi A6, a normal Mercedes-Benz E-Class, an Infiniti M, or a Lexus GS. Well that's a theory even though the SS's pricing is worth competitive.

2014 Chevrolet SS

So, what do you get with such a budget that competes against the best of Europe and Japan? Well, for starters, the SS is only available with the 6.2L V8 engine, which is as identical to the one used in the latest Corvette Stingray. This one is different because the SS's V8 engine churns out 415HP of power and it's only mated to a 6-speed flappy paddle gearbox. I'm sorry what? Only available in a flappy-paddle gearbox? That's quite disappointing for harcore enthusiasts because while the VF Commodore is available with both auto and manual gearboxes, the SS is only available with a slush-matic which is a swift as throwing stuff left-handed. With the SS though, it's flappy-paddle or nothing, and this rather annoying gearbox can spoil your fun...or is it?

2014 Chevrolet SS

Apart from the stupid gearbox offered for this redneck version of Australia's favorite sports saloon, the SS is still a dynamically-challenged car. It's still as savage as Twisted Sister's You Can't Stop Rock and Roll and as enjoyable as using the laws of science to stop those glam rockers signing that kind of song. I'm thinking...dropping caravans, getting dragged by a van, a chainsaw, a flamethrower, a fire extinguisher, a double-barreled shotgun, TNT, hammer throw, nunchucks, baseball bats, an air mortar, gravity, and a baseball being thrown at it. Those kind of things. Brainiac things.

When you give it a run on a track day, the SS sure is a menace at the track and because it's been racetrack proven thanks to its sport-tuned suspension, combined with Electronic Power Steering, the SS is surely an executive saloon mixed with racetrack DNA, much like shocking Brainiacs through the electric fence. Still as interesting as this though. Also, the SS has a better weight distribution, so it feels more planted every time when you turn it into a corner, smooth as a cocktail mixed with anchovies, gravy, and raw milk. Should I spit or swallow? I'm guessing it's a spit. Now that's what I called the professional edge.

2014 Chevrolet SS interior

2014 Chevrolet SS interior
On normal roads, it's still as civilized as the Vicar of Dibley. It even has a luxurious interior, enough for five people to fit in. It also comes with iPod connectivity, Chevrolet MyLink, HUD, and tons of interior features that will keep them accommodated for hours but not at all. Surprisingly though, it even comes with a clever parking system that allows the car to park itself. You can think about making your last minute dressups or searching for lost objects while the car parks by itself. Thank heavens for technology.

So, what can I say about the SS? Well, even though it was a VF Commodore but born to take on NASCAR rather than enjoying itself on tracks like what its Holden VF Commodore do on V8 Supercars, it's still the executive car worth spending for and since I would gladly want to have one rather than those executive saloons from Europe and Japan, it's still the most enjoyable Chevy ever made, despite using the stupid 6-speed automatic. It's still the V8 saloon on a budget that picks up where the Pontiac G8 left off. You can thank the Aussies for some clever sophistication on this car. No wonder it's still worth the shot for those who are brave enough to have its TCS OFF and enjoy sacrificing its sports tires all in the name of science.

Available colors: Phantom Black Metallic, Red Hot 2, Silver Ice Metallic, Heron White, and Mystic Green.
