HEY WHAT'S THIS? Turbocharged Veloster?!!!

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

Back in 2011 NAIAS at Detroit, Michigan, the Hyundai Veloster made a world premiere and it later went on sale at South Korea since March 10, 2011, making this the first of Hyundai's new Premium Youth Lab brand. It is limited to 18,000 units to keep its premium image. Later on, in the summer of 2011, the Veloster DCT Pack was unveiled, making this the first Hyundai to come with the new dual-clutch 6-speed paddle shift transmission. You should know that the Veloster made an appearance on the City Hunter Korean drama starring Lee Min-Ho.

Guess what, at the 2012 NAIAS at Detroit, Hyundai will premiere the all new Veloster Turbo, packed with a different face and the all new 1.6L Turbo GDi engine that produces 201HP of power and 196lb-ft of torque. No additional information was given and surely South Korea won't be selling that, yet...

Veloster vs. Genesis Coupe

2012 Hyundai Veloster
2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The 2012MY Hyundai Veloster and the 2012MY (US 2013MY) Hyundai Genesis Coupe... Yes, they're both Koreans, both built from Hyundai, both are sportscars, both are feisty, both are good-looking, both are fun-to-drive, and...NO. Sorry Filipinos, you can't get these two because our local fuels are not compatible to the cars' direct injection technology. Yes I know, we can't get these two but if there's a chance, which of these two Hyundai sports cars you think is more fun? So, let's compare these two...

The Hyundai Veloster was launched in March 2011 and its the first of Hyundai's new Premium Youth Lab sub-brand, a sub-brand that caters the needs of the young adults. It is limited in 18,000 units (albeit in South Korea) and it's offered with the 6-speed manual, 6-speed auto and the brand's first DCT (Double Clutch Transmission). It was appeared in City Hunter Korean Drama as Lee Min Ho's car of choice, whatever that is. Some say that this car was supposed to be the successor of the Hyundai Tuscani but sorry, this isn't supposed to be despite this is an FF hatchback. What's surprising about the Veloster is the doors because it can open one door at the driver's side and two doors at the passenger's side! It might be weird but this is part of Hyundai's "New Thinking, New Possibilities" slogan. Under the hood is the Gamma GDi 1.6L engine that produces 140hp of power and 17.0kg-m og torque. Perhaps because this is powered by a GDi engine, HARI can't bring the Veloster because of the fuel concerns but for some Filipinos who want to get their hands on the Veloster, they want to find one on some direct importers from the Philippines, like for example; Hancars or Pitstop Motors. These importers allow them to import the Hyundai Veloster with a very reasonably price. Is this something that they could have shove it down Hyundai Asia Resources' throat? Not so fast...

Now about the 2012 Genesis Coupe, this is the facelifted version that keeps Korea's low-cost FR sportscar updated after being on service for three years since its debut in October 2008. For this facelifted Genesis Coupe, you should expect Veloster cue design on the front and the mildly revised rear. Let's not forget the all new interior that provides user-friendly experience and the JBL Audio System sounds excellent. The new Genesis Coupe is powered by a GDi 3.8L V6 engine and a turbocharged 2.0 TCi engine. These two engines combine performance and ecology in one hand and of course, sadly, we won't be getting the facelifted Genesis Coupe soon. Sorry about that but that's HARI's decision. Guess you may just stick with your outgoing, pre-facelift Genesis Coupe because HARI will remain the pre-facelifted Genesis Coupe and always will be until the facelifted version is ready.

The Genesis Coupe is focused to be more of a maniac because this is an FR sportscar, you could do some drifting on the ground and this is the best Hyundai sportscar ever made. The Veloster, though, it's only focused only on style rather than performance. You should be going bonkers to have one but you have to wave hi to these two from far away and that's why you should wait...

ARK Performance Veloster for SEMA 2011!

2011 ARK Performance Veloster

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is definitely an eccentric hatchback because it has one door at the driver's side and two doors at the passenger's side.  It was even featured on the Korean drama, City Hunter, as Lee Min Ho's car of choice.

If that wasn't good enough to your tastes, tuning team ARK Performance decided to kick it up a little to the Hyundai Veloster for this year's SEMA Show this November 1 to 4 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

While specs became scarce before the show, the ARK Performance Veloster is tuned to have a turbocharger on its GDi engine.

Hyundai Veloster in a 100 Days To Heaven episode!

Hyundai Veloster in a 100 Days To Heaven episode!?

It's a "hot in smoke" on Philippine television.

A White Crystal-colored Hyundai Veloster made a surprise appearance on a September 23, 2011 episode of 100 Days To Heaven! Never seen that thing coming, did it?

Take note that HARI will not bring the Veloster to the Philippines because of its GDI engine not suitable for the Philippines' dirty petrol but one smart question is, how did that car appeared in the Philippines too soon even though HARI would never bring the Veloster.

We are sure that this white Veloster is a gray-market unit sourced from South Korea. Kuha mo?

Special interview with Lee Min Ho about City Hunter and the Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai Veloster in City Hunter

So, the SBS action drama, City Hunter, ended that week with a bang, made it the most successful Korean dramas aired in SBS. The ending was highly successful thanks to its high ratings because most of them got hooked all the way to the very end.

And to think that whoever says "What was the car used in City Hunter", well how many times I said, that car was the Hyundai Veloster, the hatchback coupe which was the first of Hyundai's new Premium Youth Lab sub-brand and it was limited up to 18,000 units in South Korea. Better don't ask that question again or else!

Anyway, there is a special interview with Lee Min Ho, about his progress between being a main character from City Hunter and his impressions on the new Hyundai Veloster. I'm sure he loved the Veloster because of such agility and style. We weren't surprised to see the progress of Lee Min Ho and the Hyundai Veloster all the way to the very end.

Hyundai's TUIX customizes the Veloster

2012 Hyundai Veloster with TUIX Dynamic Package

In case you missed it, Hyundai's customization program, TUIX (Tuning is Innovation and Expession), made some modifications on the Hyundai Veloster, the stylish 2+1 hatchback coupe which was the first of Hyundai's new Premium Youth Lab sub-brand, dedicated to meet the needs of young adult drivers in South Korea, basically those from 20's to 30's. The TUIX Dynamic Package features an upgraded suspension in a form of stabilizer bar, shock absorber, and springs. That's not all, the Veloster's front bumper can be personalized with either a "High Gloss bumper decal" or "Carbon Fiber bumper decal" to make it more stylish. It even features three kinds of vinyls available, which is somewhat similar to FGP-Mazda's MIYO MAZDA. There was the Arrow vinyl, the Bar Code vinyl, and the Club vinyl. What a great way to personalize your Veloster just the way you want courtesy of TUIX!

More info:

What is TUIX?
In case you haven't heard of it, TUIX is Hyundai Motor Company's customization program that was first applied on the Hyundai Tucson iX and Hyundai Avante (Elantra) MD.

Hyundai adds Dual Clutch Transmission to the Veloster

2012 Hyundai Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster was launched in March 10, 2011, as well as the debut of Hyundai's new sub-brand, Premium Youth Lab, to cater the interests of young Korean adults. It even landed as the main car of Lee Min Ho in the SBS action drama, City Hunter as well. One major drawback is that production of the 2+1 door hatchback coupe is limited up to 18,000 units to maintain its premium exclusivity.

Guess what, Hyundai just added another variant for the Veloster, first of Hyundai's new Premium Youth Lab sub-brand. This time, the South Korean automaker added a Dual Clutch Transmission under the banner "Hyundai Veloster DCT Pack" for those who think that the automatic transmission variants not good enough.

Scoop:

The first Hyundai ever to be fitted with a 6-speed Double Clutch Transmission engineered from the company itself was actually the Veloster after all! Now, you can enjoy the same great Veloster goodness now with a 6-speed Dual Clutch Transmission! Needless to say that those Paddle Shifters attached on the Veloster's steering wheel looks perfect!

But still, Hyundai Asia Resources would not bring the Veloster yet because our gas is still not as refined as the developing countries. We are salivated over to it. orz

The coolest Veloster for rally purposes

2011 Hyundai Veloster Rally Car

This is one of the coolest rally cars I saw.

Before the Hyundai Veloster went on sale in South Korea since March 10, 2011, the South Korean automaker builds the hype by creating a special Veloster Rally Car for the collaboration of Rhys Millen Racing and Red Bull.

I gotta say that this 500-HP Veloster Rally Car is the next best thing since the Rhys Millen Racing Genesis Coupe Drift Car but this is a different story.

Hyundai Veloster in City Hunter

By interest, a Hyundai Veloster in Blue Ocean color appeared on SBS' action drama, City Hunter, which stars Korean heart throb, Lee Min Ho. Also by interest, this was the car Lee Min Ho used on the Veloster Relay Mission Show.

This "Blue Ocean" Veloster was a favorite among Veloster fans because they were huge fans of Lee Min-Ho.

When a Korean car appeared at a Korean drama which stars famous Koreans, fans made a perfect balance. The Veloster driven by Lee Min Ho in City Hunter was just what we Filipinos are saying "We want a Blue Ocean-colored Veloster because of Lee Min Ho!" and guess what, Hancars has one. The most respectful gray market dealer do have a Veloster but does Hancars have the Blue Ocean-colored Veloster like the one Lee Min Ho drove during the Veloster Relay Mission Show and City Hunter Korean Drama?

Accent Wit and Veloster

2012 Hyundai Accent Wit

2012 Hyundai Veloster

The latest Hyundai hatchbacks of 2011, the Hyundai Accent Wit and the Hyundai Veloster, are just one of the coolest Korean hatchbacks I've ever seen. These are targeted for the "Raining Men" in South Korea, and it depends on their own discriminative tastes. The Accent Wit is the "Guy's Special" and the Veloster is the "Premium Unique Vehicle" under the new Hyundai communication brand, Premium Youth Lab, designed for young drivers' discriminative tastes and preferences.

First off, the Accent Wit is the hatchback version of the Accent RB (known as the Verna or the Solaris in Russia) that was launched on November 2010. The Wit was launched in early March 2011 along with the introduction of the 1.6-litre CRDi-VGT variant of the Accent RB.

My best pick on the Accent Wit is the 1.6-litre CRDi-VGT 6MT variant the reason why I pick this variant is because of the VG Turbo, Common Rail Diesel technology (is what we Filipinos love), and the fun-to-shift 6-speed manual transmission.

I guess this combo between VG Turbo, Common Rail Diesel, and 6-speed manual transmission, is just the right stuff for Filipino Hyundai fanatics like us to drool all over for anticipation, waiting for HARI's response if they will bring the diesel variant of the new Accent soon. Come on HARI, hit us up with this cool variant!

Second, there was the Veloster. Based on the 2007 Veloster concept, the eccentric 1+2 door (one at the left, two at the right) is just the most confusing part on this hatchback coupe, but the Veloster is neither a coupe nor a hatchback. It is a "Premium Unique Vehicle" created under the new banner of Premium Youth Lab, keeping the "New Thinking, New Possibilities" slogan fresh, alive, and kicking very well. With the limited availability of 18,000 units in South Korea, most men would have to rush in to this hot hatch before it's gone for good.

Armed with the Gamma 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) engine, and mated with either a 6-speed auto or a 6-speed manual, the Veloster is just one of the finest Korean hatchbacks most enthusiasts would love to indulge. Because of the limited availability, I think HARI can't bring the Veloster to the Philippines and besides, our fuel's too dirty for its advanced GDi engine.

Regarding that whole "Premium Youth Lab" thing, Veloster owners can participate in their BLU PYL Membership, where they get treated like royalty, and in other words, Veloster owners who are BLU Premium Youth Lab members receive special perks and privileges. This applies only to South Korea.

Deciding which Hyundai hatch, the Accent Wit or the Veloster, is a hard thing because not only they are hot, they are special in any ways. I just hope these two may come in the Philippines someday.

Hyundai Veloster

2012 Hyundai Veloster
The question Korean car enthusiasts ask when they encounter Hyundai's Premium Unique Vehicle, the Veloster, is this: is the Veloster a sports car or a 2-box hatchback?

It isn't a sports car and it isn't a 2-box hatchback. The Hyundai Veloster is a Premium Unique Vehicle created under the "New Thinking, New Possibilities" strategy. Although the Hyundai Veloster was based on the 2007 concept car at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, the number of doors is the trickiest part of this hot hatch. On the right side view, he/she thinks that the Veloster is a 5-door but on the left side view, it has a 100% chance of thinking that it was a 3-door hatch. The honest fact is the Veloster has four doors; two at the right, one at the left, and one at the rear. An orthodox possibility happened in the first time in world car history.

2012 Hyundai Veloster interior

The interior of the Veloster is somewhat similar to the Hyundai 5G Grandeur and that is because of the Fluidic Sculpture philosophy. One main eccentric part is the engine start-stop switch was placed in the middle and not on the driver side. What an eccentric invention for the best South Korean car maker.

The main engine that powers the eccentric Veloster is the Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) 1.6-litre engine. This engine creates a power output of 140hp/6300rpm and the torque output of 17kg-m/4850rpm. The 6-speed AT variant of the Veloster accumulates the fuel economy of 15.3km/L while the enthusiasts' favorite 6-speed MT variant offers a fuel economy of 16.3km/L. Aside from that, there are lots of conveniences offered on the Veloster such as Side and Curtain Airbags, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, DMB Navigation System, Vehicle Stability Management, Active Eco Assist, USB and iPod connectivity, and Climate Control.

The Veloster comes in 9 authentic exterior colors;
1) Blue Ocean
2) Sun Flower
3) Green Apple
4) White Crystal
5) Sonic Silver
6) Veloster Red
7) Vitamin C
8) Phantom Black
9) Sleek Silver

My thoughts about the Veloster:
The Hyundai Veloster is the most eccentric hatchback I have ever seen in world car history because of its odd number of doors; two in the right side, one in the left, and one in the back. If they offered this in RHD countries, the doors may also be inverted, making it two in the left and one on the right. This odd combo is part of its "Premium Unique Vehicle" status and it targets young drivers who are looking for fun. What an odd-clustered combination of sexy, smart, and coolness.

In South Korea, Hyundai limits the production and sales up to 18,000 Veloster models to keep its premium value. Sales of this eccentric model start tomorrow and soon in other countries, including the United States. I'm afraid that HARI could not bring the Veloster to the Philippines soon because of our country's dirty fuel that can't stand up to the Veloster's GDi engine.

Still, the Veloster is much more of a threat to the Renault Megane Coupe, Honda CR-Z, Citroen DS4, or even the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Who's up for some party at the Veloster?
