THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: N. Korea will fulfill commitment to denuclearize

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has expressed high hopes that North Korea will dismantle its nuclear weapons program as promised.

During an interview with Fox Business on Wednesday, Pompeo said Washington is very hopeful that Kim Jong-un will fulfill his commitment, which he made during the landmark Singapore summit last June.

The top U.S. diplomat also explained that tough economic sanctions on the regime have caused it to seek a different course.

U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun is in Pyeongyang to discuss the details for the second summit between North Korea and the U.S.

He departed from Seoul on Wednesday for working-level negotiations with his North Korean counterpart.

He is believed to be sitting down with his new North Korean counterpart Kim Hyok-chol, who is the former ambassador to Spain, to prepare for the upcoming summit.

It'is unclear whether the negotiations will last until today, or continue onto the third day.

And without a clear set of agreements, it would be difficult to ensure the success of their second meeting.

The North has offered to dismantle its nuclear facilities that provide materials for nuclear weapons.

That includes the permanent shutdown of its Yeongbyeon Nuclear Complex.

There's the possibility of setting up a joint liaison office, declaring an end to the Korean War.
