Doctor Who S2 FINALE |
HOLD IT!!! Before my quick review, ensure you have already watched the episode!!! Then, come back here when you have!!!
The finale began with The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) being rescued from the brink of death by a familiar face—Anita, the receptionist from the Sandringham Hotel, who has now become the hotelier of The Time Hotel. She informs The Doctor that the world is no longer progressing towards May 24, 2025; instead, it is stuck in a time loop, endlessly repeating May 23.
With Belinda Chandra and her daughter, Poppy, safe, The Doctor, with Anita's assistance, enters the UNIT HQ to uncover the truth. It is revealed that everyone at UNIT is trapped in Conrad Clark's wish world, and shortly after, The Rani appears in the UNIT HQ, declaring an all-out war.
Taking the offensive, The Doctor escorts Belinda and Poppy to the Zero Room, carefully prepared by Susan Twist to keep them safe. Meanwhile, Ruby Sunday, armed with the Indigo Device, teleports to The Rani's lair to confront Conrad by herself. Thanks to a clever hack using his sonic screwdriver during his confrontation with The Rani, The Doctor is now on the move to settle the score.
As Ruby confronts Conrad Clark, The Rani summons Omega from the Underverse. However, The Rani’s fate is sealed by The Beast of Omega, while Mrs. Flood, The Rani's predecessor, makes her escape using her Time Ring. Fortunately, The Doctor manages to grab the Vindicator and pushes Omega back into its slumber.
On Ruby's side, she successfully grabs Desidirium and puts an end to Conrad's hostility for good. As The Rani's lair begins to collapse, The Doctor rushes back to the TARDIS with Ruby and Desidirium inside, nullifying Desidirium's wishing powers forever.
Upon returning to UNIT HQ, they find that Belinda and Poppy are miraculously safe. Desidirium is now in the hands of Ruby's foster parents, Carla and Cherry Sunday, who have renamed it Joseph. Everything seems to be returning to normal, or is it?
As The Doctor, Ruby, and Belinda travel together, Ruby begins to suspect that Poppy may have ceased to exist, and soon, The Doctor and Belinda find their memories of Poppy's existence fading as well. When the clock strikes midnight on May 24, 2025, Anita bids farewell to The Doctor and the UNIT team. They learn of subtle changes in reality, with Mel discovering Conrad’s last whereabouts, where he appears to be living a normal life.
Ruby tries to convince everyone that Belinda's daughter, Poppy, has disappeared, but the others believe Ruby is experiencing a glitch in her memory. It isn't just Ruby; both Belinda and Susan Twist, along with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, also recall being saved by The Doctor during their infancy.
Remembering this, The Doctor heads to the TARDIS to save Belinda's daughter, Poppy. Drawing inspiration from one of his predecessors, played by Jodie Whittaker, The Doctor uses all of his regeneration power at the TARDIS console to rewrite reality.
Moments later, The Doctor reunites with Belinda and her daughter, Poppy, revealing that Belinda had a human daughter all along. Following this revelation, The Doctor bids farewell to Belinda, marking the end of the season as he faces his regeneration.
Who would have thought that "The Reality War" marks the end of Ncuti Gatwa's tenure as The Doctor? It was a shocking turn of events. Gatwa has been part of the franchise since "The Giggle," and yet, after nearly two years, he announced his departure from the Whoniverse.
I can hardly imagine the expressions on the faces of every Whovian watching the two-part season finale in cinemas across the UK and Ireland. Saying goodbye to Ncuti Gatwa's portrayal of The Doctor is incredibly difficult, but his journey has certainly been an unforgettable one for fans.
It is an absolute honor to have Ncuti Gatwa take on the role of The Doctor. He teamed up with Ruby Sunday, Belinda Chandra, and the UNIT forces, among others, as well as battling new and legendary enemies such as The Toymaker, Sutekh, The Rani, and Omega. They traveled through various universes, and these moments will be treasured forever.
Ncuti Gatwa's time as The Doctor has come to an end, but a new chapter is about to begin—with a familiar twist. Yes, the Bad Wolf has returned. The season finale revealed that Billie Piper will return to Doctor Who, this time as The 16th Doctor. Shocking, isn't it?
Before that, a new Doctor Who mini-series is on the way. Titled "The War Between the Land and the Sea," this mini-series will soon air on BBC in the UK and Disney+ worldwide. It stars Russell Tovey as a human soldier named Barclay and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a Sea Devil named Salt.
While the absolute terror is finally over, The Rani is still out there. No matter what happens, The Doctor's journey will continue.
Thank you, Ncuti Gatwa, and welcome back, Billie Piper!
DOCTOR WHO WILL RETURN...
