Doctor Who 2023 Christmas Special

The 15th Doctor's maiden voyage kicked off in the 2023 Christmas Special of BBC's Doctor Who, where he and his new companion, Ruby Sunday, are dealing with a group of mischievous creatures wreaking havoc over the Christmas season.

Doctor Who 2023 Christmas Special

HOLD IT! Ensure you have already watched the episode before my quick review. Come back here when you have already watched it.

Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson), an orphan fostered by Carla and Cherry Sunday, faced a series of unlucky situations over the yuletide season, from her interview with TV personality Davina McCall to a party at the nightclub, but this isn't a case of bad luck as mysterious creatures are plotting to bring Ruby down.

On Christmas Eve, the baby Ruby and her foster parents were fostering was taken away by sinister creatures known as the Goblins. As Ruby fatefully met The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), the two strangers aboard the Goblin ship and got captured by the Goblins. Making their escape, Ruby and The Doctor uncovered the Goblins' sinister plot; feeding the abducted baby to The Goblin King. Having foiled the Goblins' attempt, the two rescued the baby and rushed back home.

Feared they'll be back for more, with accidents the main attraction, The Doctor and Ruby are accident-proofing the whole flat, ensuring the Goblins will never abduct the baby again. Although they left cracks at the ceiling, they foiled the Goblins again...but at a terrible cost; Ruby Sunday.

As Ruby's foster mother and grandmother, Carla and Cherry, are losing memories of their foster child and the other foster children they've raised, it appears that the Goblins abducted Ruby at the moment she was left at the church on Christmas Eve, so The Doctor rushed to where it all started; the Church on Ruby Road.

Using the last remaining power of his Intelligent Gloves, The Doctor dragged the Goblin ship down by force, vanquishing The Goblin King at point blank. He successfully rescued the baby Ruby but stopped short of figuring out her real mother.

As things went back to normal, The Doctor's about to leave until Ruby realized something about who The Doctor really was. With such revelation, Ruby rushed to the TARDIS and The Doctor made his formal introduction to her.

So, The Church on Ruby Road, the Christmas special truly marked the beginning of The 15th Doctor's adventure and the chance to get to know his new companion, Ruby Sunday. Although it feels down-to-earth simple for a Doctor Who Christmas special, it's the Goblin Song that made it the best scene of the episode. I just can't get enough of listening to it as the bass drops.

Also, the Christmas Special marks the debut of The 15th Doctor's sonic screwdriver, which is now shaped like a blob remote from the 2000s, as well as one of his new gadgets, the Intelligent Gloves. The gloves are great but that new Sonic Screwdriver design is getting stuck on our heads now. We just want one someday...

Anyway, now that the whole world witnessed The 15th Doctor's true beginning, it's going to be a long wait before the next season kicks off this spring. In the meantime, let's enjoy some special features now that we've enjoyed the DW 2023 Christmas special.
