- A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck southeastern Turkey, killing around 2000 people. The quake struck before dawn at Gaziantep, home to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees.

- 16 pro-democracy activists are going on trial in Hong Kong in one of the most high-profile cases yet under a National Security Law imposed by Beijing in 2020.

- The Israeli Army said it killed a number of people described as "armed fighters" during a raid on a refugee camp in the Occupied West Bank. Officials said they wanted to capture Hamas militants suspected of planning an attack.

- Beijing has summoned the US ambassador over the shooting down of the Chinese observation balloon over the coast of South Carolina last weekend. China's foreign office describes Washington's use of force as an "overreaction" and a "serious violation of international law and practice".

- Australia will reimpose the alcohol ban on aboriginal communities in the central part of the country despite such measures that have been previously described as "racist" and "ineffective".

- Pope Francis noted that the Catholic Church's catechism says same-sex attraction is not a sin but homosexual acts are. It also says that LGBT people should not be marginalized.

- Netflix launched its new password-sharing policy in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

- Martin Truex Jr. wins NASCAR's Busch Light Clash exhibition race at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

- The NBA has issued a ban on some individuals from the FedExForum after a postgame incident between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Indiana Pacers on January 29th.

- Harry Styles' album Harry's House wins best album at this year's Grammys while Beyonce scored four awards.
