- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assured that any attack on Philippine forces, aircraft, or government vessels in the South China Sea “would trigger mutual defense obligations” under the Mutual Defense Treaty signed by Manila and Washington in 1951. The visiting US official gave this assurance when he was specifically asked to clarify on American commitment to help the Philippines in case a shooting war breaks in the South China Sea.

- The Senate Committee on Public Services approved the bills seeking to allow the operations of Angkas and other motorcycles to transport commuters. At the second and final hearing of proposals lifting the ban on two-wheeled vehicles from ferrying passengers, Senator Grace Poe, committee chairperson, moved to approve Senate Bill Nos. 2173 and 2180, which both seek to allow the use of motorcycles as public utility vehicles.

- An Army official expressed belief that the conduct of the Philippine-United States Military Exercises, SALAKNIB and Balikatan 2019, will further strengthen alliance between the two countries.

- The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 has struck southern Peru.

Pakistan prepared to hand over a captured Indian pilot while blistering cross-border attacks across the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir continued for a fourth straight day, even as the two nuclear-armed neighbors seek to defuse their most serious confrontation in two decades.

- Singapore plans to buy four F-35 fighter jets to update it ageing current fleet, according to the defense minister. The city-state, which has one of Asia’s best-equipped militaries, announced in January it had opted for the Lockheed Martin jets over rivals from Europe and China, and planned to first buy a small number before deciding on a full fleet.

- Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido vowed to return home “in the coming days… despite threats” from President Nicolas Maduro’s regime, as he continues a tour of regional allies to rally international support.
