- Those planning to run in the September 22 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls in Marawi City can file their certificate of candidacy beginning Thursday, August 23. In a press briefing, Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said candidates were given eight days to file their COC for practical considerations.
- President Rodrigo Duterte warned politicians against forming their own private forces as part of his commitment to ensure peaceful and credible elections next year. The President said he would deploy the military and police to dismantle any private armed groups created by candidates in next year’s elections.
- The Department of Health warned the public against the purchase of meat and seafood products that might be laced with formalin, as it may cause cancer and other health risks. Health Undersecretary Rolando Enrique Domingo made the pronouncement after reports surfaced that imported seafood products might be laced with formalin to extend shelf life and to look deceptively fresh.
- The Trump presidency is facing a backlash as two onetime members of his inner circle were labeled "guilty" of criminal charges. In a split screen for the history books, Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted of financial crimes at nearly the same moment Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to a series of felonies, including campaign finance violations that the lawyer said he carried out in coordination with Trump. With two men played prominent roles on the president's campaign convicted of multiple criminal charges, the investigations circled ever closer to Trump.
- Hawaii residents braced themselves as a strengthening hurricane continued to churn toward the state. On Tuesday night, the National Weather Service announced that Hurricane Lane had become a Category 5 hurricane, which means that it is likely to cause catastrophic damage with winds 157 mph or above. The hurricane is about 500 miles (804 kilometers) southeast of Honolulu.
- A fleet of Japanese whaling ships caught 177 minke and sei whales during a three-month tour of the northwestern Pacific, according to the government. The three-ship mission returned home as Tokyo prepares to make its case to resume commercial whaling at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Brazil next month.
- A senior cleric warned that Iran will strike against US allies if the United States attacks.
